How to find a replacement door hinge that fits
Do not choose a hinge by appearance alone. A mismatch can leave the hinge sitting incorrectly in the mortise—the recessed seat in the door or frame—or require new holes or wood repair.

- Measure the old hinge and note its overall shape and dimensions.
- Record the number and position of screw holes, along with the hinge’s finish.
- Check whether it is inset into a mortise or mounted on the surface.
- Confirm that the hinge is for the same application: a room door and a cabinet door use different hardware.
Also check the door material and thickness, the hinge maker’s load requirements, and whether the replacement needs special tools or adjustment. The manufacturer’s instructions take precedence. If you are unsure what the old hinge is, bring it—or clear photos and measurements—to a hardware supplier.

For a like-for-like replacement, gather a tape measure, a screwdriver that fits the screw heads, and sturdy wood or cardboard to support the door. Sandpaper can help clear small splinters or debris from the hinge seat. Screw-head types vary; the Phillips #1 driver used in one repair example is not right for every hinge.

Set the support firmly beneath the door so it cannot swing or tip while you work. A helper is useful if the door is heavy or awkward to control. If you cannot support it securely, stop and get help from a qualified installer.
How to replace a typical room-door hinge
- Support the door. Place stable pieces of wood or folded, sturdy cardboard beneath it. Make sure the door is not left slanted or able to swing. Keep the support in place while screws are removed and the hinge is changed.
- Remove the old hinge. With the door stable, use the correctly fitting screwdriver to remove the screws fastening the hinge to the door and frame. When practical, replace one hinge at a time so the others continue to support the door. If you remove the whole door or all its hinges, keep it securely supported throughout.
- Inspect the hinge seat and holes. Clear away loose debris or splinters; sand rough spots if needed. Compare the replacement against the old hinge and the seat. If the screw holes are damaged or the hole pattern differs, do not assume a quick filler repair will hold a load-bearing hinge reliably.
- Align and fasten the replacement. Check the hinge orientation and confirm that it can close fully. Align it with the existing holes when it is a match, then fasten it without forcing screws into misaligned holes or overtightening. Follow the instructions supplied with the hinge.
- Test the door. Once the hinge is securely attached, remove the temporary support and carefully open and close the door. Check that it is supported, moves freely and sits acceptably in the frame. If it binds or sags, stop and check the alignment, screw grip and hinge compatibility rather than forcing it.
Installing a new hinge instead of replacing one
A new installation may require different hole locations or a mortise, so the old hinge’s holes cannot automatically serve as a layout guide. The right placement and fasteners depend on the door, frame and hinge model; there is no single hole pattern or load rating that fits every room door. Follow the hinge maker’s instructions, and use a drill and appropriately selected pilot bit only when the instructions call for them. If the required layout or wood repair is unclear, ask a qualified installer rather than improvising on a load-bearing connection.

Cabinet hinges need their own installation steps
Concealed cabinet hinges are not installed like ordinary room-door hinges. For a new cabinet hinge, the cup must fit its mortise and the screw holes must be accurately located; a hinge jig can help. Follow the instructions for the specific hinge, use controlled drilling depth for pilot holes, and have someone support the cabinet door while it is removed or refitted. Many concealed hinges allow adjustment after mounting, but the adjustment method depends on the model.

When to stop and get help
- The door is heavy, awkward, damaged or cannot be held securely while the hinge is removed.
- The hinge seat is badly damaged, the screw holes no longer grip, or the replacement does not match the existing mortise and hole pattern.
- The door still sags or binds after fitting, or you cannot confirm that the hinge is compatible.
Appliance hinges are outside the scope of this room-door procedure. They can require model-specific service steps, including power disconnection; use the appliance maker’s directions instead.
