Purple Heart (Tradescantia pallida) stays healthy with bright light, freely draining soil, and watering adjusted to its growing conditions. Give outdoor plants more sun for richer purple foliage, but acclimate them gradually; indoors, bright filtered light is a safer starting point. Pinch stems for a fuller shape, and bring container plants inside before temperatures fall below 50°F.

What is Purple Heart?

Purple Heart, also called Purple Queen or Purple Spiderwort, is a tender, trailing perennial native to Mexico. Its purple stems bear lance-shaped leaves, and it may produce pink to pale-purple flowers in summer. It is grown as a houseplant or as an outdoor annual in colder climates, and can be used in containers, hanging baskets, borders, rock gardens, or as ground cover. How much light does Purple Heart need?

Light advice depends on where the plant is growing and how intense the sun is. Outdoors, full sun to partial shade is suitable; more sun generally produces stronger purple color, while shade can leave foliage greener. The University of North Florida Botanical Garden also notes the connection between sun and color. UNF Botanical Garden profile

For indoor plants, or a plant newly moved into a sunnier position, start with bright filtered light and watch for leaf scorching. The Royal Horticultural Society recommends part shade or bright filtered light and cautions that direct sun can scorch leaves. Increase exposure gradually rather than moving a sheltered plant abruptly into strong sun. RHS plant profile

What soil and watering keep it healthy?

Drainage matters more than a fixed watering calendar. Use moist but well-drained soil; outdoor beds benefit from soil rich in organic matter. In a container, choose a pot with drainage holes and use a well-draining potting mix. The RHS lists moist but well-drained soil or peat-free, loam-based compost for containers. NCSU Extension RHS

Purple Heart tolerates drought once established, but the cited horticultural sources also describe it as able to tolerate frequent watering. Let conditions guide you: temperature, light, container size, and active growth all affect how quickly soil dries. Reduce watering for indoor plants in winter, when growth slows. Avoid leaving roots in persistently waterlogged soil.

How do you keep Purple Heart bushy?

Pinch the tips of stems to encourage branching and a more compact, full plant. If stems become long or spindly, cut the plant back; Wisconsin Extension recommends cutting it back after flowering when needed. During active growth, Wisconsin Extension recommends monthly fertilizing. For plants overwintered indoors, reduce water and pause fertilizer until fresh spring growth begins. How do you propagate Purple Heart?

Stem cuttings are an easy way to make new plants. Take a healthy piece of stem with a node, then root it using either method:

  1. Place the node in loose soil or potting mix and keep the mix from drying out while roots establish.
  2. Alternatively, stand the cutting in water and pot it once roots have developed.

Wisconsin Extension notes that a cutting placed in loose soil or potting mix will usually root, and that it can also be started in water. Wisconsin Extension

Can Purple Heart survive winter outdoors?

North Carolina State Extension lists Purple Heart as hardy outdoors in USDA zones 10–11 and says it does not tolerate temperatures below 50°F. In colder regions, treat it as a seasonal outdoor plant or protect it from cold. Bring container plants indoors for winter, before temperatures approach that threshold. NCSU Extension

Unwanted spread

Purple Heart can spread in beds, and NCSU Extension cautions that it may become invasive in some settings. This is not a claim that it is officially invasive everywhere: use containers or monitor its growth where local conditions make escape or spread a concern. NCSU Extension

Skin irritation

Sap may irritate skin. Wisconsin Extension reports that juice from leaves or stems can cause redness and irritation in some people and dogs; the University of North Florida Botanical Garden notes calcium oxalate crystals in the sap that can irritate tender skin. Handle cut stems thoughtfully and wash exposed skin. Wisconsin Extension UNF Botanical Garden

Indoor container or outdoor bed?

Growing setup Best fit Key consideration
Indoor container Bright filtered light and control over winter conditions Watch for scorch in direct sun; reduce watering in winter.
Outdoor bed Suitable warm climates, with full sun to partial shade Sun can deepen purple color; monitor spread and protect from cold outside USDA zones 10–11.

Neither setup is universally better: choose based on available light, cold exposure, drainage, and whether you can keep spreading growth contained.
