A gentle stem scratch can tell you whether the small section you test is still alive. Green, pale green, or cream-colored tissue that feels slightly moist is a hopeful sign; brown, dry, brittle tissue suggests that section is dead. It cannot prove the whole plant will recover, so check lower on the stem and consider the roots, watering conditions, and the plant’s seasonal growth pattern before giving up.
How to do the stem scratch test
-
Choose a small spot on a stem. On a woody stem, gently scrape just enough surface to see the tissue beneath the bark. A thumbnail may be enough on a softer stem. Avoid deep cuts or scraping a large area.

Look at the exposed tissue and feel it lightly. North Carolina State University Cooperative Extension says living tissue beneath the bark will usually appear green, pale green, or cream-colored and feel slightly moist. Brown or tan tissue that is dry and brittle suggests that the tested section is dead. This guidance concerns woody ornamentals, so treat it as a clue for a houseplant—not a guaranteed diagnosis.

If the tip is brown or dry, make one small check farther down the stem. Test near the base before concluding that every stem is dead. A few small checks are more useful than repeatedly wounding the plant.

XLUX Plant Soil Moisture Meter, for Indoor and Outdoor use, Battery-Free- Trusted Since 2015: Become one of the many plant lovers who rely on the proven accuracy of XLUX. Established in 2015, our soil moisture meter has earned over 60,000+ verified ratings for its consistent performance. While many many newer brands come and go, we provide the long-term reliability and quality that American households have trusted for over a decade.
- Take the guesswork out of watering: While your eyes and fingers can only determine the moisture level of the soil surface, the XLUX meter tells you exactly what’s happening deep inside your pot or garden. Our high-sensitivity probe reaches the root zone where it matters most, requiring no batteries or charging—simply insert for an immediate, real-time reading to help your plants stay healthy and vibrant.
- Clear & Easy-to-Read Display: Perfect for beginners and expert gardeners alike. The large, color-coded dial features 10 distinct scales (Dry-Moist-Wet), making it incredibly simple to know exactly when to water. From lush Monsteras to tall Fiddle Leaf Figs, you’ll get the clarity you need at a single glance, ensuring every plant gets the precise care it deserves.
- Slim Single-Probe: Protects Delicate Roots: Protect your plants' health. Unlike bulky dual-probe testers or thick-diameter sensors that can tear and stress sensitive root systems, our sleek, slim-needle design slides smoothly into various soil types. It delivers reliable moisture data with minimal soil displacement, keeping your plants’ delicate roots safe and undisturbed while you monitor their hydration.
- Pristine Condition & Essential Care: To ensure you receive a factory-fresh instrument, each XLUX meter includes a custom anti-abrasion protective sleeve. This inner liner prevents micro-scratches during transit, maintaining the integrity of the 304 stainless steel probe. Usage Tips: 1. Soil Use Only (no liquids). 2. Temporary Test: Insert, read, and remove within 5 minutes. 3. Maintenance: Always wipe the probe clean and store it in its protective sleeve after use.
The University of Connecticut Home Garden Education Office also describes using a thumbnail to check whether tissue feels fleshy rather than dry and brittle. Neither observation establishes a universal rule for every houseplant species.
What the result can—and cannot—tell you
-
Green or moist tissue: The tissue at that spot is likely alive. It does not tell you whether the roots are healthy, how much of the plant is damaged, or whether growing conditions will support new growth.

XLUX Long Probe Plant Soil Moisture Meter, Indoor Outdoor use, Battery-Free- Accurate Soil Moisture Detection: The XLUX Soil Moisture Meter can tell you if the soil deep inside your pot or garden is dry, moist or wet; whereas your eyes and fingers can only determine the moisture level of the soil surface. The probe is 5.5 inches (14 cm) longer than regular styles, allowing it to measure the soil moisture at the bottom of larger and deeper flower pots.
- Easy-to-Read Large Dial: The large dial is easy to read and includes three zones with ten scales, making it very straightforward to understand.
- Immediate Moisture Reading: Insert the probe into the soil, and without waiting, the dial will immediately display the moisture level. You can then decide whether your plant needs watering based on the measurement. Do not leave this moisture meter in the soil for more than 5 minutes, as the metal tip will gradually corrode.
- Less Damage: A single probe causes less damage to plant roots compared to double or multiple probes, and when you remove the probe after testing, it won't bring out much soil.
- Usage Precautions: Do not use it to test very hard soil. Do not test water or other liquids. After testing, please wipe the probe clean.
-
Brown, dry, brittle tissue: That stem section is likely dead. Check lower down; a dead tip does not establish that the whole plant is dead.

No clear result: Do not keep scraping to force an answer. Look at the plant’s base, roots, soil moisture, and normal seasonal behavior.

Extension guidance does not set a universal survival threshold or recovery probability based on a scratch test. One living spot is encouraging, not a promise that the plant can be saved.
Could it be dormant rather than dead?
Some houseplants can lose their leaves and become stick-like while dormant. Leaf loss alone is not enough to distinguish dormancy from death: seasonal patterns vary by species. Identify the plant if possible, then consider whether its usual growth cycle fits what you are seeing. The University of Connecticut Home Garden Education Office notes that some houseplants become dormant and lose leaves.

Check water and roots before changing care
Wilting can accompany too much or too little water
Do not respond to wilting by automatically watering more. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach explains that both a dry root ball and prolonged wetness can cause trouble; persistently wet roots can rot and die. Check the soil and make sure excess water can drain before watering again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsInspect roots when symptoms point to root trouble
If decline continues or the soil has stayed wet, inspect the roots. The University of Maryland Extension describes healthy roots as light-colored and firm; dark, soft roots indicate diseased or rotting tissue. Root condition is a separate observation from the stem scratch test.

- Accurate Soil Moisture Detection: The XLUX Soil Moisture Meter detects deep soil moisture in pots or gardens (dry/moist/wet), unlike eyes or fingers that only sense surface soil.

- Immediate Moisture Reading: Insert the probe into the soil, and without waiting, the dial will immediately display the moisture level. What to do if you find rot
If rot appears limited, remove rotten portions and preserve healthy tissue. University of Maryland Extension recommends replanting healthy sections or taking cuttings in sterile potting mix. University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension emphasizes reducing soil moisture for plants being kept with root rot. These measures are not a guarantee for a severely damaged plant.
Address the conditions that contributed to decline rather than treating only the visible damage. The University of California Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program lists improper watering, fertilization, root disease, sanitation, and unsuitable environmental conditions among common contributors to houseplant problems; more than one may be involved.
Decide from the whole plant, not one scratch
Use the scratch test to locate living stem tissue, then weigh that finding alongside the plant’s roots, soil conditions, and likely dormancy pattern. If you find living tissue, monitor for signs of renewed growth while correcting any care or environmental problem you identify. If one stem is dead, check lower sections and the base before deciding whether the entire plant has failed.
