The right anchors, drill bit, and mounting details depend on the rod and the wall surface, so follow the manual for your specific model rather than transferring hardware instructions from another product.
Before you start: check the rod and gather tools
Read the full installation guide and check that the parts are present and undamaged. If the rod arrived damaged, do not install it; contact the seller or manufacturer. Manuals also advise following applicable local building and safety codes.
Set out the parts and the tools required by your model. The reviewed instructions include a level, tape measure, pencil, drill, screwdriver, and, depending on the product, a hammer, specified drill bits, or hacksaw. Use only the supplied or manufacturer-approved screws and anchors for the wall type. A hacksaw is appropriate only if that rod’s instructions permit trimming.
Choose the rod position before drilling
Hold the assembled rod in its intended position, asking someone to help support it if needed. Check its height and projection, use a level, and mark both bracket locations carefully. Account for the curtain and hooks where the product instructions call for it; the reviewed manuals do not establish one universal mounting height.

Curved rods extend beyond the tub differently depending on the tub and rod design. As model-specific examples, Signature Hardware’s guide for a 60-inch standard tub places the rod approximately 3 inches inside the point where a straight rod would normally be mounted, with the midpoint extending several inches past the tub’s outside rim. For its 60-inch oval-tub example, it recommends mounting 6 to 8 inches from the tub center line, depending on the tub model, with the curve just outside the tub contour. These are not universal measurements. See the Signature Hardware installation guide.
Match the mounting method to the wall
Identify what is behind each marked bracket location and follow the rod’s manual for that surface. Drill-bit sizes and anchor requirements vary by product; do not assume a size from another model applies.

- Stud: Fasten into the stud with the manufacturer-specified screws. Signature Hardware’s guide specifies wood screws for a stud. A separate RONA-hosted manual gives a 1/8-inch pilot-hole example for its stud method; that measurement is specific to that product.
- Drywall without a stud: Use anchors appropriate to the wall and rod, installed as instructed. Preferred Bath Accessories Inc. states in its product instructions, “Wall anchors must be used, unless you encounter a stud.” A RONA-hosted manual describes a 1/4-inch hole and hollow-wall anchor for its product; neither instruction makes that size universal.
- Tile: Use the tile-appropriate bit and anchors specified for the rod and wall system. The reviewed guides call for a masonry or tile-specific bit but do not establish one universal bit size or anchor.
- Acrylic shower surround: Check the specific product instructions before attaching brackets to it. Preferred Bath Accessories Inc. warns not to secure its wall brackets to acrylic shower walls and instead directs installation above the acrylic tub into the finished walls. This is that product’s instruction, not a universal rule for every rod.
For surface-specific examples, consult the RONA-hosted installation manual and the Preferred Bath Accessories installation instructions, then use the manual supplied with your rod as the authority for its hardware and procedure.
Install the rod step by step
- Assemble the rod. Join its sections and components in the order shown in its manual. Some models use receivers, sleeves, or other locking parts. Trim only if the instructions allow it; where a manual specifies equal cuts at both ends, follow that model-specific direction.
- Position and mark. Hold the rod at the chosen height and projection, check that it is level, then mark both bracket holes. Recheck the marks before drilling.
- Drill the mounting holes. Use the bit size and technique specified for your rod and wall material. For tile, use the appropriate tile or masonry bit stated in the manual.
- Install anchors where required. Use the specified anchors for drywall or other surfaces, unless the instructions call for direct fastening into a stud. Do not substitute an anchor simply because it fits the hole.
- Fasten the brackets. Secure each bracket with the specified screws, keeping it aligned with the marked position. Do not overtighten or use a different fastener without confirming it is suitable.
- Fit and lock the rod. Seat the rod ends in their brackets or receivers and put sleeves or transition pieces in the position required by the manual. Tighten set screws or other locking parts as directed.
- Check the installation. Confirm both brackets are secure and the rod remains level before hanging the curtain. Do not stand on the tub ledge while installing or checking it.
Trimming, tension mounting, and load limits
Do not assume every curved rod can be shortened or installed the same way. Some manuals allow trimming; others specify how a particular fixed-length rod must be cut. Likewise, tension and permanent bracket installations are different methods: use only the method documented for your model. The Allen + Roth installation guide, for example, documents both tension and permanent installation for its product and lists a 15-pound (6.8-kilogram) maximum evenly distributed load for that model only. Use the rating stated in your own rod’s instructions; do not treat that figure as a general limit for curved rods.
