Boiling water can suppress small, young weeds growing alone in cracks in patios, sidewalks, or driveways. It is a contact treatment: it damages the plant tissue it touches, but often leaves established roots alive. Use it only where splashes cannot reach people or plants you want to keep; for rooted perennials or weeds in beds and lawns, choose another method.
Where boiling water isâand is notâa good fit
Use this method for isolated weeds in hardscape cracks, where you can direct the pour at the weed without wetting nearby plants. Young, newly emerged annual weeds are more susceptible than established perennials or grasses with protected growth structures. Iowa State University Extension describes the approach as most effective on young annual weeds (Iowa State Extension, updated August 4, 2025).
Do not treat boiling water as selective: it can damage any desirable foliage it contacts. Avoid using it in lawns, ornamental beds, or native plantings. It is also a poor choice when the weedâs persistent roots, rhizomes, or bulbs need to be removed. An Ask Extension response about weedy orchid, a perennial, likewise advises that boiling water affects contacted foliage but does not kill its roots (Ask Extension, June 9, 2024).
How to apply boiling water carefully
- Choose a suitable target. Confirm the weed is in an isolated patio, sidewalk, or driveway crack, away from people and plants you want to protect.
- Bring water to a boil and carry it with care. Boiling water can cause serious scalds. Avoid a full or awkward container that is difficult to control, and keep others clear of the route and work area.
- Pour directly onto the weed. Iowa State Extension suggests using a tea kettle for a more controlled, precise application. Direct the stream at the target and avoid splashing; the source does not specify a quantity or pour duration.
- Check the plant and the site. Contacted tissue may wilt quickly and brown over the next one to two days. Look for regrowth rather than assuming the weed is gone.
- Plan a follow-up if needed. Iowa State Extension recommends planning to retreat in 7â10 days because one application rarely kills the whole plant, particularly a deep-rooted weed. This is practical guidance, not a guarantee of eradication.
Why weeds can grow back
Heat from a pour damages the parts of the plant it touches; it does not reliably reach roots or other underground structures in the soil. Plants with established roots can resprout after several days, even if the above-ground growth wilts or browns. Repeatedly pouring water over the same spot does not make this a dependable root-removal method.

Nor should a household kettle be treated as a way to sterilize soil or kill seeds. UC ANRâs WeedCUT guidance says there is no evidence that soil weed seeds are killed by saturated steam or hot-water treatment when equipment is operated as recommended; that guidance concerns thermal systems, not a direct test of a household kettle (UC ANR WeedCUT).

Choose another method for established weeds
- Hand-pull or dig when roots matter. A trowel or hoe can help remove the plant and its roots or other persistent parts. Established perennials may need repeated attention, and leaving plant parts behind can allow regrowth (Iowa State Extension, reviewed June 2026).
- Use mulch to suppress new growth. After removing existing weeds, mulch can help suppress seed germination and new emergence. Typical mulch does not destroy established weeds or their roots (Iowa State Extension, reviewed June 2026).
- Do not confuse kettle use with thermal equipment. Professional hot-water or steam systems are different from pouring water from a kettle. UC IPM notes that home-applied hot water has limited suppression because its temperature falls after leaving the heat source; professional units can be expensive to buy and maintain. Perennials with rhizomes or bulbs are poor targets for these methods (UC IPM).
