Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Before buying remanufactured mining equipment, verify the identity and configuration of the exact machine, get a written account of what was inspected, repaired, replaced, or reused, and have a qualified specialist compare its records and condition with the work promised. If the machine must meet a safety approval, check that its delivered configuration still matches the applicable approval documentation. “Remanufactured” alone does not establish the work performed, the machine’s present condition, or the warranty you will receive.
Start by pinning down what is being sold
A remanufactured machine can mean different things in different sales offers. The seller may have rebuilt a whole machine, restored selected systems, or remanufactured only certain components. Begin by asking exactly what the term means in this transaction—not what it means in a brochure or in another company’s process description.

Identify the unit and the job it must do before reviewing the offer. Record its equipment type, manufacturer, model, serial number, year if available, operating hours, location, and the mine and duty for which you intend to use it. List major component identities where they are available. Compare those details across the quotation, machine plates, rebuild records, inspection reports, and the unit being offered. A document that describes a similar model or component is not evidence that the work was done to the machine you are buying.
Also distinguish a claim about past work from a claim about future performance. A seller may be able to document what was done without establishing remaining service life or suitability for your particular duty. If the offer includes an hours-remaining or expected-life claim, ask for its basis, assumptions, and supporting records; no universal expected-life figure for remanufactured mining equipment is established here.

Resolve identity discrepancies before moving on to condition. A swapped major component, a serial-number mismatch, or a record that names only a model family can make it difficult to tell whether the documented work belongs to the offered unit. Ask the seller to explain substitutions and identify which records relate to the current machine and which relate to a component that has since been replaced. If an item cannot be tied to the machine or component by available identifiers, note that limitation rather than treating the record as conclusive.
Ask for a component-level rebuild scope
Request a written scope organized by major system or component. For each item, have the seller state whether it was inspected, repaired, remanufactured, replaced, reused after inspection, or not touched. Ask what inspection criteria and tolerances were used, who performed the work, and what records are available. Where applicable, request parts traceability and records of non-destructive examination. Do not treat a list of new parts as a full rebuild description: it may not say what happened to the rest of the system.
ISO 10987-2:2017 addresses identification and labelling, applicable processes, and relevant information for remanufactured earth-moving machinery components. The ISO catalogue says the edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2022 and remains current according to that page. It is a useful reference for asking how components are identified and documented, not proof that a particular seller followed the standard or that a whole mining machine has been certified to it.
A published process can help you understand the kinds of evidence a buyer might request, but it cannot stand in for the records on the actual unit. For example, Liebherr describes disassembly, cleaning and appraisal, automated tolerance measurements and crack inspections, restoration, final inspection, and testing with a report. Ask your seller which comparable records exist for the offered machine or component; do not assume that another rebuilder’s process or criteria apply.
Use the published process as a prompt for concrete questions: Was the component disassembled? What was appraised? Were tolerances measured, and are the results available? Were crack inspections performed, and if so, what does the record identify? What restoration work followed, and what final inspection or testing was completed? The point is not to require every seller to follow another company’s particular sequence. It is to replace a broad label with evidence about the work actually performed and the criteria used to accept it.
Check whether the paperwork is specific and complete
- Match machine and component model and serial numbers in each record to the items offered for sale.
- Look for dated scope documents, inspection findings, measurements, test records, parts information, and sign-off identifying the responsible facility or technician where available.
- Ask the seller to explain any gaps, substitutions, or work performed by another shop, and request the underlying records if they exist.
- Have the seller identify open defects, deferred work, and any condition that limits the scope of its claims.
- Separate documents describing a standard process from documents showing that the process was applied to this unit.
Ask for records in a form that can be reviewed before purchase, not just a summary after you have committed. If a report mentions a measurement, find out what criterion or tolerance it was compared with; if the seller says a test was passed, ask what test was performed and what the result was. Where records do not exist, ask whether the work can be inspected or documented now, and include any agreed follow-up in the written sale terms.
Verify approval and configuration for the destination mine
Where the machine must be MSHA-approved or certified, inspect its approval or certification marking and obtain the applicable approval number and documentation, including relevant drawings or specifications. Ask a qualified person to compare the delivered configuration and significant modifications with those records. A visible mark is not a general certificate of present condition: MSHA explains that approval marks represent conformity to approval requirements and filed drawings or specifications, so a rebuilt machine bearing a mark still has to meet the relevant requirements.

In the United States, MSHA’s Program Information Bulletin P11-34, published in 2011, says that when a mine operator acquires new, used, or repaired approved equipment, the operator is responsible for ensuring it is in approved condition and complies with applicable regulatory requirements before it is placed into service. The bulletin also addresses obligations for original manufacturers and rebuild shops supplying equipment with an MSHA approval or certification mark. Treat this as US regulatory guidance, not a rule for every country or mine.
For a material question about an approved configuration, MSHA’s Approval & Certification Center says it can assist repair and rebuild facilities and conduct requested on-site audits to verify conformity with approved design. Its technical assistance information is a place to learn about that service. MSHA recommends reputable or manufacturer-approved rebuild shops; that recommendation is a reason to verify a shop’s qualifications and documentation, not a substitute for checking the unit.
Make the approval check specific to the equipment’s destination and intended use. A mark on the machine does not answer whether later changes, substituted components, or the delivered configuration remain consistent with filed approval drawings or specifications. Ask who can compare those details and what documents that person needs. If the answer is unresolved, do not treat the mark alone as confirmation that the machine is ready to enter service.
Do not transfer US approval assumptions to another jurisdiction. In the United Kingdom, HSE guidance explains that refurbishment and modification can have different consequences depending on the changes and the machine’s provenance. Substantial changes to design, function, or safety may trigger obligations under the applicable UK machinery framework, including conformity assessment, marking, or labelling duties. Establish which rules apply to the mine’s location and intended use before agreeing that a machine is ready for service.

The UK guidance is not a universal rule for equipment sold elsewhere. If the machine will be used outside the United States or United Kingdom, identify the applicable local requirements rather than assuming that either example governs. The practical question for the buyer is whether the machine, as delivered and intended to be used, has the required status in the actual jurisdiction.
Arrange an independent examination before committing
Choose an inspector competent in the equipment type and the intended application. Agree the scope in advance: what records the inspector will review, what parts or systems can be accessed, what criteria will be used, how findings will be documented, and who pays to remedy a failed item. If approval configuration or safety-critical systems are in question, involve appropriately qualified specialists rather than asking a general inspection to settle a specialist issue.
Ask the inspector to compare the physical unit with the rebuild scope and to distinguish verified work from seller statements. The resulting report should identify observations, unresolved defects, missing records, and items that could not be assessed. For disputed or inaccessible work, ask what further access, testing, or documentation would resolve the uncertainty. No universal pre-purchase inspection protocol is established for every mining machine; the examination should be tailored to the machine, its duty, the agreed rebuild scope, and applicable rules.

Agree on access and acceptance criteria before the inspection begins. For example, establish which records will be made available, what areas can be examined, and how the inspector should report items that cannot be verified. Confirm who is responsible for any corrective work identified and whether the buyer will have an opportunity to review that work. These arrangements help avoid treating a limited visual review as a comprehensive assessment when access or records were restricted.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA provider-specific example illustrates why the scope must be machine-dependent: Brookville’s mining rebuild page describes an onsite inspection to develop scope and lists work such as frame repair, engine and cooling or exhaust restoration, transmission and torque-converter rebuild, driveshaft inspection or repair, wheel and tire work, axle rebuild or upgrade, and electrical-system changes. Those examples can help prompt questions where relevant; they are not a mandatory checklist for every equipment type or evidence that any other seller performed that work.
Use such examples to tailor questions, not to copy a generic checklist onto every machine. Which systems matter depends on the unit and its intended duty. Ask the inspector to explain why an item is in or out of scope and to distinguish a defect observed from work that was not accessible for assessment. No universal set of mining-machine inspection points or standard pass/fail score is prescribed by these sources.
Witness a safe functional demonstration
Arrange to see the machine operate under safe conditions, with the seller and qualified personnel present as appropriate. Agree in advance which functions can be demonstrated, what conditions are safe, and which results will be recorded. Compare what you observe with the rebuild contract, the seller’s stated acceptance criteria, and applicable manufacturer criteria available for the relevant configuration. Ask for test results in writing rather than relying on a verbal assurance that the machine “ran well.”
A demonstration is useful evidence, but it is not a substitute for records or an independent assessment. It cannot by itself establish the quality of hidden work, establish an approval configuration, or prove remaining service life. If a system cannot be demonstrated before sale, record that limitation and negotiate how it will be resolved—such as additional access, a test before final acceptance, or an explicit allocation of responsibility in the contract.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Keep the demonstration tied to agreed criteria. A test result is easier to evaluate when you know what was tested, under what conditions, and what acceptance standard the parties are using. Do not infer that a brief operation validates every rebuilt component or resolves an approval question. If the seller’s acceptance criteria differ from the manufacturer criteria available for the configuration, ask for the difference to be explained and recorded.
Settle warranty, support, and acceptance terms in writing
Get the seller’s actual warranty and sale terms before signing. A general statement that rebuilds carry a warranty is not enough to determine what protection transfers with the machine. Check the start date and duration, covered systems, exclusions, labor and travel, claim-notification deadlines, available remedies, and transferability. Ask whether the rebuild work has different coverage from parts that were replaced, and whether coverage depends on maintenance, operating conditions, or service performed by particular providers.

Confirm the practical support arrangements as well. Ask where parts and service are available, whether specialist diagnostic access or software is needed, and who can provide it in the mine’s location. Brookville’s page states that it warrants its own rebuilds but does not establish terms that can be generalized to another seller. The contract and warranty supplied for your transaction must answer the details.
For a machine that may need specialist service, establish who you can contact and whether support is available where the equipment will operate. No standard parts-availability promise, response time, or warranty duration for the industry is established here. Treat those as commercial points to confirm directly, especially if the seller’s offer depends on a particular service provider or diagnostic capability.

Before acceptance, attach or identify the documents that form the deal: rebuild scope, inspection report, test results, approval documents where applicable, outstanding-defect list, and warranty. If the parties agree that corrective work or records must be delivered, specify the work, responsible party, deadline, and acceptance or payment milestone in the written agreement. These are buyer protections to negotiate; do not assume they are statutory requirements without checking the governing jurisdiction.
For any open item, write down whether it must be resolved before delivery, before acceptance, or before the machine is put into service. Identify what evidence will close it, who will provide that evidence, and how the parties will handle a failure to do so. A written list is more useful than an informal promise because it connects the inspection finding to a clear next step in the transaction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare offers on evidence, not just the label
Use the same questions for each machine or rebuild offer. The comparison below is a decision framework, not a published scoring system. There is no supported universal weighting or expected-life number to plug into it.
| Comparison area | What to compare | Evidence to request |
|---|---|---|
| Scope and components | Which systems were replaced, repaired, remanufactured, reused after inspection, or left untouched? | Component-level scope tied to the unit’s model and serial numbers. |
| Inspection and testing | What measurements, examinations, and demonstrations support the seller’s claims? | Inspection findings, criteria or tolerances used, test records, and unresolved-item list. |
| Approval and configuration | Does the delivered machine match requirements for the destination mine and jurisdiction? | Applicable approval records and qualified review of relevant configuration changes. |
| Remaining-life claims | What does any stated remaining life or operating-hours claim mean, and what assumptions support it? | Seller’s basis and records. If no basis is supplied, do not treat the claim as established. |
| Warranty and support | Which parts and work are covered, where is service available, and what conditions apply? | Written warranty, exclusions, claim procedure, parts and service arrangements. |
| Delivery and capability | What are the delivered cost, transport arrangements, lead time, and rebuilder’s relevant capability? | Written offer and traceable records identifying the rebuilder and work performed. |
Compare delivered cost rather than looking at the quoted machine price in isolation. Confirm what transport and delivery arrangements are included, what lead time the seller is offering, and whether there are additional commercial conditions tied to inspection, records, or corrective work. No standard prices, savings percentage, or cost premium for remanufactured equipment is established here, so a buyer should compare actual written offers rather than rely on a generalized benchmark.
A lower price does not resolve missing evidence, and a more extensive description does not prove the work. If important records, approval answers, or warranty terms are unavailable, decide whether to make them a condition of purchase, adjust the price and risk allocation, or decline the offer. Compare rebuilder capability and traceability alongside scope: knowing who performed the work and what records follow the unit helps you assess how well the claims can be checked later.

Use a go/no-go review before signing
Make the decision against the actual operating need, not the word “remanufactured.” Before committing, confirm that the machine and records match, the work scope is understood, independent findings are resolved or explicitly accepted, the configuration is suitable for the mine, and the contract assigns responsibility for any remaining work. If one of those items is uncertain, record exactly what is unknown and who will resolve it before the machine is placed into service.
A useful final review is to ask whether you can answer, from the documents and inspection, what was done to the machine, what remains unverified, whether its configuration suits the destination, and what support and warranty actually transfer. If you cannot answer one of these, decide whether the seller can provide the missing evidence or whether the uncertainty changes the purchase decision. No industry failure rate or universal life expectancy is established by these sources to replace this unit-specific review.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I ask a seller before buying remanufactured mining equipment?
Ask for the exact machine and major-component identities, a written component-level rebuild scope, inspection criteria and tolerances, available measurements and test reports, any open defects, approval documentation where applicable, and the written warranty and support terms. Confirm which parts were reused, repaired, remanufactured, replaced, or left untouched.
Does an approval mark prove a rebuilt machine is ready for service?
No. MSHA explains that approval marks represent conformity to approval requirements and filed drawings or specifications; the mark is not a blanket certificate of present condition. In the United States, MSHA says the mine operator is responsible for ensuring acquired approved equipment is in approved condition and complies with applicable requirements before it is placed into service.
Is there a standard inspection checklist for every remanufactured mining machine?
The sources do not establish a universal pre-purchase protocol for every machine. Tailor the examination to the machine type, intended duty, rebuild scope, and applicable rules, using a competent inspector and appropriately qualified specialists for approval or safety-critical questions.
Does ISO 10987-2 certify a whole remanufactured mining machine?
No. ISO 10987-2:2017 addresses identification and labelling, applicable processes, and relevant information for remanufactured earth-moving machinery components. It can inform documentation questions, but it does not prove that a specific seller followed it or certify a whole machine.
What warranty should I expect on a remanufactured machine?
No standard industry warranty duration or coverage is established here. Obtain the specific seller’s terms in writing, including start date, duration, covered systems, exclusions, labor and travel, claim deadlines, remedies, transferability, and any service or maintenance conditions.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallHow should I compare two remanufactured equipment offers?
Compare scope and reused versus replaced parts, inspection and test evidence, approval and configuration status, the basis for any remaining-life claim, warranty and support, delivered cost and transport, lead time, and rebuilder capability and traceability. The sources provide no universal scoring system or expected-life number.
The Bottom Line
Buy on evidence tied to the exact unit, not on the remanufactured label. Match the machine and components to the records, define the rebuild scope, verify approval configuration for the destination, use a qualified independent examination and safe demonstration, and put warranty, support, defects, and any remaining work in writing before acceptance.
