The simplest way to hang curtains without drilling is to use a tension rod inside a recessed window opening, provided the rod’s size and load rating suit the curtains. If the window has no usable recess, adhesive rod hooks may work on approved smooth surfaces; lightweight frame hooks are intended for net curtains, not heavier drapes. Measure first, then follow the exact product instructions.

These options are not interchangeable: a tension rod presses inside a recess, adhesive wall hooks can put a rod beyond the recess if the surface and load allow it, and frame hooks support a lighter rail. Product specifications differ by model and market; confirm them on the local package or product page.
How to choose and fit a tension rod
- Measure the clear width inside the recess at the point where the rod will press against the sides. Do not use the outer wall width.
- Choose a rod whose adjustment range includes that measurement and whose load rating covers the combined weight of the rod and curtains.
- Install and extend the rod as its manufacturer directs. Tension-rod limits are model-specific. For example, IKEA’s FJÄDRANDE product page lists an adjustment range of 70–120 cm and a maximum load of 2 kg; those figures apply to that model, not to tension rods generally. Check the IKEA product page.
- Hang the curtains and check that the rod stays stable before relying on it for regular use.
How to install adhesive curtain rod hooks
Check the surface and conditions
For the cited 3M Command product, the US instructions exclude wallpaper, fabric, textured walls, brick, and rough surfaces. They specify indoor use between 10°C and 40°C and say to wait seven days after painting. These restrictions are specific to that product’s instructions; check the directions for the hooks you buy.
Confirm the rod and load
Measure and mark both hook positions at equal heights. Check the rod diameter and the total weight of the rod and curtains against the exact product’s limits. For example, 3M lists a 10 lb load claim for product 17654 and compatibility with rods up to 3/4 inch in its US product instructions. A separate Australian instruction sheet describes a particular white-hook setup with a 1.27–1.9 cm rod and a 4.5 kg total-weight limit; that regional specification does not apply to every hook or market. Apply the hooks and let the adhesive set
- For the cited 3M US instructions, clean the surface with rubbing alcohol, not water or household cleaner.
- Apply the strips and press the hook in place for 10 seconds.
- Slide the hook off, press the base firmly for 30 seconds, then replace the hook.
- Wait one hour before hanging the rod.
Follow the exact instructions supplied with your product if they differ from these steps. The cited 3M instructions say to remove a hook by sliding it off, holding the base, and slowly pulling the adhesive tab straight down along the wall for at least 15 inches. Do not pull the strip toward yourself.

tesa’s Vario-Curtain Hooks product information, dated 25 September 2024, describes hooks for standard kitchen or bathroom curtains and net rails weighing up to 1 kg. It lists even wood, tile, most plastics, glass, acrylic glass, steel, and metal as compatible surfaces. The document says the product is not water-resistant or waterproof, so do not assume it suits every damp room or exposure.

The installation instructions say to clean with alcohol or silicone-free glass cleaner, press the Powerstrip Small onto the surface for at least five seconds, attach the hook and press for at least five seconds, then close the hook until it locks. Confirm that your frame material and rail match the product information before installing.

Common reasons no-drill curtain setups fail
- The opening does not suit a tension rod: it needs opposing sides to press against and only covers the recess.
- The load or rod size is out of range: include the rod’s weight as well as the curtains, and check the permitted diameter for adhesive supports.
- The surface is excluded or poorly prepared: adhesive products have specific restrictions; a smooth-looking surface is not automatically approved.
- The adhesive is used too soon: paint-curing waits and post-installation setting times vary by product and matter to the installation.
- The product is used in the wrong setting: a light net-rail hook is not a substitute for a curtain-rod support, and a product not rated water-resistant should not be assumed suitable for damp exposure.
