Topiary turns living shrubs and trees into forms that can be playful, elegant, or architectural. This visual roundup highlights 17 kinds of bush and shrub sculptures—from animal figures to mazes and geometric shapes—while treating them as design inspiration rather than a verified list of places currently open to visitors.

What counts as a bush or shrub sculpture?

Topiary is the practice of pruning shrubs or trees into distinctive shapes or living sculptures, as NC State Extension explains. Its forms can suggest familiar characters, animals and objects, or take the shape of mazes and abstract designs. The examples below are visual categories, not claims that any particular installation is currently on display at a named venue.

17 forms of topiary to look for

Characters and storybook scenes

  1. Fairy-tale figures: Sculpted greenery can evoke characters from stories such as Beauty and the Beast, using recognizable silhouettes to make a garden feel theatrical.
  2. Underwater characters: Fish-shaped shrubs and other aquatic-inspired figures bring a playful subject to a medium associated with formal gardens.
  3. Dancing figures: A pair or group of human forms can suggest movement through posture, spacing, and carefully shaped outlines.
  4. Familiar screen characters: A bright, recognizable silhouette—such as a frog-like figure—can make topiary feel more like pop art than traditional garden ornament.

Animals and natural forms

  1. Dogs in a scene: Two animal figures arranged together can tell a small visual story rather than functioning as isolated ornaments.
  2. A sleeping bird: A curled or resting bird shape shows how a plant form can convey posture as well as species.
  3. A sparrow silhouette: A smaller bird form can rely on a clean outline to read clearly against surrounding greenery.
  4. A cat-shaped hedge: Feline ears, back, and tail create an instantly legible outline when clipped as one continuous form.
  5. An owl: A rounded body and prominent facial features offer a recognizable subject with a compact silhouette.

Objects, patterns, and garden structures

  1. A living couch: Furniture-like topiary blurs the line between landscape and sculpture, turning an everyday object into a planted feature.
  2. Spiraling trees: A twisting outline gives a tree a sense of motion and makes its structure part of the design.
  3. A shrub maze: Here, clipped growth shapes the visitor’s route as well as the view; the design is both sculpture and landscape plan.
  4. A waterfall-inspired form: A descending or flowing outline can suggest moving water even though the material remains living greenery.
  5. A piano: A recognizable object sculpted in foliage can make a garden feature feel whimsical and unexpected.
  6. A flower bowl: A bowl-like shrub form combines clipped structure with a softer floral display.
  7. Geometric shapes: Spheres, cones, and other regular forms emphasize proportion and clean lines rather than literal subjects.
  8. Abstract cultural forms: Topiary can also draw on regional motifs and artistic traditions; identifying a specific origin or meaning requires reliable attribution to the work and its maker.

Why large topiary is a long-term project

Elaborate living forms depend on plant growth, careful shaping, and continuing maintenance. The right species varies with climate and site. In an interview, landscape designer Fernando Wong names yew, arborvitae, boxwood, dwarf Alberta spruce, rosemary, germander, podocarpus, Japanese holly, lavender, privet, and cherry laurel among plants used for topiary. These are examples, not a universal planting list; suitability depends on local growing conditions.

Maintenance also depends on the plant and the intended shape. NC State Extension’s boxwood guidance notes that pruning frequency can vary with growth rate and that excessive shearing can leave brown or dead areas. For hedges, the extension recommends a base slightly wider than the top so light reaches lower branches, along with occasional hand thinning to admit light into the interior.

Trying a small topiary at home

For a first project, keep the scale manageable. Wong suggests beginning with geometric shapes or buying a small plant that is already shaped; he also described the physical effort involved in making large-scale sculptures, saying of competition contestants, “They worked so hard.” That is a useful reminder that monumental forms are not simply a matter of clipping a shrub into shape.

  • Identify the shrub before pruning; different species respond differently to cutting.
  • Check locally applicable advice on timing, especially whether the plant flowers on old or new wood.
  • Use hand pruning shears for precise maintenance where appropriate, and avoid aggressive shearing that can expose or damage inner foliage.

NC State Extension’s pruning guidance gives different timing considerations for plants that flower on old wood versus new wood, so a single calendar rule is not suitable for every shrub.
