To grow tomatoes in pots, choose a container with drainage, use quality potting mix, give the plant strong direct sun, and check its moisture often. A compact or determinate variety is usually easier to manage in a container; Oregon State University Extension recommends a pot at least 12 inches deep and gives a 5-gallon nursery pot as one example for determinate tomatoes.
Choose a tomato suited to a container
Oregon State University Extension says any tomato cultivar can be grown in a container, but smaller-growing determinate varieties are often more manageable. They take longer to outgrow a pot and are easier to trellis there. Illinois Extension also recommends varieties developed for containers, including dwarf and patio types. These are selection principles, not guarantees of a particular harvest.

Before choosing a plant, check its expected mature size and growth habit. A larger or vigorous plant generally needs more room and sturdier support than a compact one.

Pick a pot with enough depth and drainage
For a determinate tomato, OSU Extension recommends a container at least 12 inches deep and offers a 5-gallon nursery pot as an example. A larger container restricts root and plant growth less, but no pot size guarantees a specific yield. Choose usable volume and depth with the cultivar’s eventual size in mind.

Drainage holes are essential. Use a good-quality potting mix rather than garden soil; OSU’s container guidance recommends an all-purpose mix containing perlite or vermiculite to help drainage. If you use a saucer, do not leave the pot sitting in standing water for long periods.
Find a sunny, accessible spot
Set the pot where it receives abundant direct sunlight. OSU Extension advises seven or more hours a day for tomato growth and fruit ripening; Illinois Extension describes six hours as the minimum for full sun in its container guidance. Aim for at least six hours and preferably more where conditions allow. Local heat and weather can affect how well a plant performs.

Choose a spot where you can reach the pot easily to check its moisture and where the plant can be protected from cool temperatures. Container plants can be moved when needed, although a large, wet pot may be difficult to shift.

Fill the container with potting mix, plant the tomato according to the plant or seed-start instructions, and water it in. Water by checking the mix, not the calendar
Container mix can dry faster than garden soil, so inspect it regularly. OSU’s general container guidance is to water when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry, then water thoroughly until excess drains from the bottom. Illinois Extension notes that container tomatoes may need watering daily or even more often. The actual frequency depends on weather, pot size, plant size, and exposure.
Try to keep moisture reasonably uniform. OSU’s tomato guidance warns that inconsistent irrigation can contribute to fruit cracking or blossom-end rot. Avoid both letting the mix dry out severely and keeping it persistently waterlogged.

Fertilize for a container, not a garden bed
Tomatoes respond well to fertilizer, but more is not always better. OSU Extension notes that excess nitrogen can drive excessive vine growth and delay fruit maturation. Its example application rates are for garden beds, not a universal schedule for pots.
