A flowering potted hydrangea does best indoors in bright, indirect light, a cool room, and evenly moist soil with good drainage. With attentive care, it can stay attractive for several weeks. Getting it to flower again is a separate, less certain project that depends on the plant and its growing conditions.
How to care for a blooming hydrangea indoors
Choose a cool, bright spot
Place the plant in bright, indirect light, away from harsh direct sun and hot or cold drafts. For a flowering florist hydrangea, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach recommends a room temperature of 60 to 65°F. Iowa State’s indoor-care guidance was last updated March 19, 2024.
Keep the potting mix evenly moist
Check the soil often and water as it begins to feel dry to the touch. Large leaves and flower clusters can use substantial water, so the plant may need frequent checks. Water thoroughly, then allow excess water to drain; do not let the roots sit in saturated soil.
Make sure water can escape
If the pot is wrapped in decorative foil or plastic, remove or open the cover while watering. Empty any water trapped inside it, and make sure the nursery pot has drainage holes. A hydrangea needs consistent moisture, not standing water around its roots.

With good care, a flowering potted hydrangea may remain attractive for several weeks, according to the University of Missouri Extension. That is an approximate display period, not a guaranteed lifespan.
What to do when the flowers fade
Decide whether you want to treat the hydrangea as a seasonal flowering plant or invest in trying to bring it back into bloom. Florist hydrangeas are often bigleaf hydrangeas, and advice for outdoor garden shrubs does not automatically apply to every potted plant kept indoors.

| Approach | What it involves | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Enjoy it as a seasonal display | Provide cool, bright conditions, careful watering, and drainage while the flowers are open. | The simplest option; good care may keep the plant attractive for several weeks. |
| Attempt reblooming | Pruning, repotting, strong light, outdoor growth during the warm season, and a cool dormant period. | A documented extension method exists, but it does not guarantee flowers. Success depends on the plant and climate. |
Can a florist hydrangea bloom again?
It may, but reblooming is not a straightforward continuation of indoor flower care. The University of Missouri Extension describes a seasonal approach: after flowering, cut shoots back so two nodes or pairs of leaves remain, repot in a suitable mix, and grow the plant in strong light. The guide then recommends moving it outdoors in May to a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade, watering and feeding during active growth, and providing a cool dormant period before bringing it back to a bright, cool room. See Missouri Extension’s flowering-potted-plant guide for its seasonal details.
That method is an attempt, not a promise. Iowa State advises that florist hydrangeas are not reliably winter-hardy or reliably able to flower again in Iowa, and recommends discarding them after flowering. That caution is specific to Iowa; it should not be treated as a universal forecast for every cultivar or climate. If you live elsewhere, local hardiness and the identity of your plant matter.

Keep indoor hydrangea advice type-specific
“Hydrangea” covers multiple species, while florist plants are often bigleaf hydrangeas sold in bloom. General shrub-growing advice, such as the Royal Horticultural Society’s guide to shrubby hydrangeas, provides context for outdoor and container growing but is not a substitute for indoor care directions for a flowering florist plant. Flower color also should not be expected to change simply by moving a hydrangea indoors; color response is tied to soil conditions for some hydrangeas, not established as an indoor color-control technique.
