Chokecherries (Prunus virginiana) are hardy North American shrubs or small trees that tolerate a range of soils, but their roots send up shoots that can spread into a thicket. Choose a site with room for that growth, keep new plants evenly moist while they establish, and prune in late winter or early spring. If you want a tidy lawn-edge tree, plan for recurring sucker removal.

Choose a site and decide how you want to grow it

Chokecherry can be grown as a multi-stem shrub or trained as a small tree. It suits naturalized areas and wildlife plantings where root shoots are welcome; in a small bed or formal lawn, the suckering habit means ongoing maintenance. Shoots may emerge beyond the canopy, and home gardeners cannot reliably prevent them.

Most plants in Utah State University Extension’s guidance stay at or below about 30 feet tall and grow 10 to 20 feet wide. Maine Extension describes larger dimensions in its regional landscape profile, so use the selected cultivar’s mature size and local nursery or extension guidance when choosing a location. The plant tolerates varied soils, but site drainage and available space still matter.

Shrub or tree form?

  • Choose shrub form if you have room for a broad, multi-stem plant and want to renew older stems through pruning.
  • Train a tree form if you prefer a more defined canopy and can maintain an open center. Suckers can still arise from the roots.
  • For easier fruit picking, Utah State University Extension notes that keeping a plant around 6 to 10 feet can help where that form is appropriate.

When and how to plant chokecherries

Spring or fall planting gives roots time to establish before summer heat. Utah State University Extension offers 5 to 8 feet as general spacing guidance; adjust that distance for cultivar, mature size, and whether you are growing a shrub or tree. Allow more room if you want to accommodate root shoots rather than remove them routinely.

  1. Prepare the hole. For container-grown plants, make it about twice as wide as the container but no deeper than the root ball. For bare-root stock, spread the roots in a broad hole at approximately their existing depth.
  2. Settle the soil. Backfill, then water thoroughly so soil settles around the roots.
  3. Mulch. Apply mulch over the root zone to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping it from piling against the trunk.

Water and fertilize according to the site

Watering during establishment

Keep the root zone moist but not waterlogged during the first growing season. Utah State University Extension gives about twice-weekly watering as a Utah-region starting point when rainfall and temperatures call for it; it is not a fixed schedule for every garden. Check the soil and account for rain, heat, and soil drainage. Water at the base rather than wetting foliage for long periods.

For established plants, supplemental irrigation is most useful during drought. Maine Extension recommends regular growing-season water while plants establish and additional water during severe drought afterward. Its landscape rule is 1 inch of water per week during establishment, defined as one year after planting for each inch of trunk diameter at planting; treat this as Maine guidance, not a universal prescription.

Fertilizer and soil amendments

Test the soil before adding fertilizer or amendments, then follow the results and local extension advice. Maine Extension advises against nitrogen fertilizer at planting and during the first growing season, and recommends not fertilizing unless a soil test indicates a need. Utah State University Extension likewise says its fertilizer example is general guidance rather than a specific production standard. There is no single fertilizer recipe established for every chokecherry site.

Prune for shape and manage root suckers

Seasonal pruning

Prune in late winter or early spring before bud break. For a tree form, remove selected branches to maintain an open center and encourage light and air movement. For a shrub, renewal pruning can remove roughly one third of older growth at a time. Chokecherries bear fruit on young wood, so removing older, weaker growth helps maintain younger fruiting stems.

Removing suckers

Root suckers are a normal feature, not a sign that the plant needs more pruning. Cut shoots as close to ground level as possible with pruning shears, repeating as they appear. Mowing can remove them, but may leave pointed stubs. Iowa State University Extension says there is no practical way for a home gardener to prevent suckering; herbicide applied to shoots can also injure or kill the parent plant.

Watch for pests and disease

Utah State University Extension lists tent caterpillars, aphids, chokecherry gall midge, black knot, bacterial spot, and canker among possible problems. Webbing and defoliation may point to tent caterpillars; distorted or damaged fruit can be associated with gall midge; black swellings on branches are a sign of black knot.

Identify the problem before choosing a response. Depending on the issue, sanitation and removal of infested or diseased material may be appropriate, while treatments should be specific to the pest or disease. No single spray is a general treatment for chokecherries.

Harvest ripe fruit and handle it safely

Fruit ripens at different times by location and elevation. In Utah, Utah State University Extension gives July through September as a common harvest period; ripe fruit is dark purple, black, or dark red. The plant may begin bearing heavily in its third or fourth year, but that timing is not a guarantee for every cultivar or site.

Chokecherry fruit can be astringent, so it is commonly processed into preserves, juice, syrup, jelly, or wine rather than eaten raw. Utah State University Extension states that the fleshy fruit is not toxic, but leaves, stems, and pits are toxic. Keep pits intact and separate them during processing; do not crush them into food.

What to expect from a mature plant

Utah State University Extension reports a lifespan of 20 to 40 years and yields of up to 30 to 40 pounds per plant for some varieties after establishment. These are source-specific estimates, not promises: cultivar, growing conditions, and maturity affect actual results. The same source gives about 30 inches of seasonal water in production guidance, a figure that should not be treated as a home-garden requirement across regions.
