Black bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra) grows green canes that darken to blackish-brown as they mature. It is an evergreen, running bamboo, so choose its site with spread in mind: give it moist, well-drained soil and sun or partial shade, and plan containment or use a container before planting.

How to identify black bamboo

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) identifies Phyllostachys nigra as an evergreen bamboo native to China. Its canes start green and turn blackish-brown as they mature; its narrow, lance-shaped leaves can reach 12 cm long. The plant’s dark colour develops with age, so newly emerged canes may not yet look black.

The RHS gives the species an H5 rating on its UK hardiness scale. This is UK-oriented guidance, not a universal minimum-temperature guarantee; local climate, exposure and growing conditions affect how a plant fares elsewhere. RHS: Phyllostachys nigra.

Where and how to plant it

Choose a position in full sun or partial shade, with fertile, humus-rich soil that stays moist but drains well. Protect the plant from cold, drying winds. RHS species guidance states: “Grow in fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil, in full sun or partial shade.”

Black bamboo may seem more clump-forming at first in cool temperate conditions or in poor, dry soil, but that is not dependable containment. In warm, moist, favourable conditions it can spread; decide on a barrier or container before setting it in the ground.

Does black bamboo spread?

Yes. Phyllostachys has running rhizomes, underground stems that can send up shoots beyond the original planting area. The RHS says running-bamboo rhizomes generally grow in the top 30 cm of soil and can spread more than a metre in a year. Those are general observations about running bamboo, not a prediction of the rate or distance for a particular P. nigra planting. RHS: Bamboo control in gardens.

Check the whole planting boundary regularly for shoots, including beyond a barrier. If a shoot escapes, cut it back promptly; Missouri Botanical Garden notes that cut shoots return, and repeated removal can take many years to eradicate running bamboo. Any herbicide use must follow the product label and local rules. Missouri Botanical Garden: Controlling Bamboo.

Containment options for an in-ground planting

Barrier recommendations vary by source and are not a universal guarantee. Missouri Botanical Garden recommends containing running bamboo in a container or installing a continuous vertical plastic rhizome barrier 30–40 mil thick and 22–30 inches deep. RHS general bamboo guidance describes a trench at least 60 cm deep and ideally 1.2 m deep, with at least 7.5 cm of barrier left above soil level. These are distinct recommendations; assess the site’s soil and layout, and monitor for rhizomes escaping at edges or joins.

Barrier continuity matters: close joins securely and keep the exposed upper edge visible enough to inspect. Do not assume that either source’s dimensions are adequate for every garden. Missouri Botanical Garden: Controlling Bamboo; RHS: How to grow bamboo.

Growing black bamboo in a pot

A container avoids an open-ended in-ground planting area and makes the plant easier to move or divide, but it requires regular attention to water and feeding. Use a substantial planter with drainage and peat-free, loam-based compost. RHS general guidance suggests containers at least 45 cm across and deep for smaller bamboos; that is general bamboo advice, not a species-specific guarantee that a container of that size will suit a mature black bamboo.

Seasonal care, pruning and propagation

Spring pruning

In spring, remove weak, dead, damaged or spindly stems. Thin crowded canes if you want to display their colour and form. Use clean, sharp cutting tools and remove cut material from the planting area.

Spring division

The RHS recommends propagating P. nigra by division in spring. Its general bamboo guidance describes dividing in mid-spring and using younger outer rhizomes. Established rootballs can take considerable effort to separate and may require a saw, so divide only when you can handle the root mass safely and replant divisions promptly.

Flowering

Bamboo flowering is rare and can weaken a clump. Flowering does not mean every bamboo necessarily dies afterward; assess the plant’s condition rather than assuming it must be removed. RHS: Phyllostachys nigra; RHS: How to grow bamboo.

In-ground planting or container: which suits your garden?

Consideration In-ground planting Container planting
Spread control Requires a planned barrier and ongoing inspection for escape Restricts the planting area to the container, but roots and shoots still need monitoring
Growing space More room for the plant to establish, provided rhizomes are contained Limited by planter size; may need division or repotting
Watering and feeding Needs suitable, reliably moist soil; RHS advises feeding in poor soil Needs liberal regular watering and monthly balanced liquid fertiliser in the growing season
Moving or dividing Established rootballs can be difficult to divide Easier to move, though a large rootball may still take effort to divide
