To propagate basil from a cutting, take a healthy 3–4-inch stem section at a node, remove the leaves that would sit underwater, and root the stem in water in bright, indirect light. Change the water every 3–4 days; when the roots are about 1 inch long, plant the cutting in potting mix in a pot with drainage holes.

What you need

  • A healthy basil plant with a sturdy stem
  • Sharp scissors or pruners
  • A glass of water
  • Potting mix and a small pot with drainage holes for transplanting

Rooting hormone is not necessary for basil cuttings, according to University of Maine Cooperative Extension.

How to propagate basil in 5 steps

1. Choose and cut a healthy stem

Pick a healthy stem and use sharp scissors or pruners to cut a 3–4-inch section at a node—the point on the stem where leaves grow. This length and cutting guidance comes from the University of Tennessee Extension.

2. Prepare the cutting

Remove the leaves from the lower part of the stem so they will not sit in the water, leaving the upper foliage intact. Start with a hydrated cutting and handle it gently to limit water loss; Maine Extension recommends minimizing water loss when taking cuttings.

3. Root the stem in water

Set the cutting in a glass so the bare lower stem is submerged and the leaves remain above the waterline. Place it in bright, indirect light and replace the water every 3–4 days. Roots commonly appear in 2–3 weeks, but use root length—not the calendar—as your cue to transplant, advises Tennessee Extension.

4. Plant when the roots are about 1 inch long

Fill a pot with drainage holes with potting mix. Set the cutting so its roots are covered, then firm the mix gently enough to hold the stem upright. Water lightly after planting. Tennessee Extension recommends transplanting when the roots reach about 1 inch.

5. Help the cutting settle in

Keep the newly potted basil in gentle light rather than hot, direct sun while it adjusts. Maine Extension suggests a somewhat shaded location for potted cuttings for a few weeks. Check the soil and water when needed rather than keeping it constantly wet. Once the plant is established, move it toward warm, sunny growing conditions; basil is sensitive to cold.

Can you plant the cutting directly in soil?

Yes. Maine Extension says basil cuttings can be placed directly into the ground or into pots. This skips the water-to-soil transplant, but you will not be able to see root development as clearly. The cited extension guidance does not establish that either method has a higher success rate for home growers.

Basilia Basil Seeds for Eating, Edible Sweet Basil Seed, 1 lb Bag
  • BASIL SEEDS WITH TWICE THE FIBER OF CHIA: One ingredient, whole sweet basil seed (Ocimum basilicum), cleaned and packed for eating rather than planting. Serving for serving they carry about double the fiber of chia.
  • NEUTRAL ENOUGH FOR ANYTHING: Basil seeds carry almost no flavor of their own, which is exactly why they work everywhere. They take on whatever you mix them into, from lemonade and coffee to yogurt, smoothies and overnight oats.
  • SOAK 5 TO 10 MINUTES: Stir a spoonful into water or juice and the seeds swell to several times their size, turning translucent around a black center. Five minutes gives a firmer bead, ten a softer one. Always hydrate before eating.
  • LOADED WATER, SMOOTHIES AND PUDDING: Sold elsewhere as sabja or tukmaria, these are the seeds used in falooda and in basil seed drinks. Stir them into lemonade, iced tea, yogurt, overnight oats or a chia-style pudding.
  • 1 LB RESEALABLE BAG: Four times the seed of the 4 oz pouch and the size to keep on the shelf once a glass of loaded water is part of your day. Gluten free, keto friendly, vegan and plant based, with no sugar, additives or fillers.

How to encourage leafy growth

After the plant establishes, pinch or harvest the stem tips to encourage branching and leaf production. Remove flower spikes if your aim is continued leafy harvest. West Virginia University Extension and University of Illinois Extension discuss tip harvesting and pinching as part of basil care.

What propagation can—and cannot—tell you about harvest

A 2022 Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service publication summary reports that basil grown from cuttings may be ready to harvest about two weeks earlier than basil started from seed. It also reports a 50 to 70 percent greater harvest in research comparing cuttings with seed-grown basil. Those are reported research findings, not a promise for every cultivar or home growing conditions; the same yield difference should not be assumed for an individual garden.
