Chiyo-no-matsu, a Japanese white pine at the Omiya Bonsai Art Museum, measures 1.8 metres wide and 1.6 metres tall. The museum estimates it is 500 years old and describes it as the largest bonsai in its collection. It is a striking example of what “giant bonsai” can mean—but the phrase is descriptive, not an official size category, and the evidence available does not establish 13 individually verified giant trees.
What counts as a giant bonsai?
There is no universal size threshold that makes a bonsai “giant.” Here, the term means unusually large compared with the miniature trees many people picture when they hear “bonsai.” Bonsai are woody plants grown in containers and trained to evoke the character of full-sized trees; they are not necessarily genetically dwarf plants. A large specimen remains a bonsai because of its cultivation and presentation, not because it meets a global size rule.
Measurements and ages below are reported by the institutions that care for the trees. Ages are estimates, not independently verified birth dates. The sources do not establish a global ranking for the largest or oldest bonsai.
Remarkable large and old bonsai specimens
Chiyo-no-matsu: Omiya’s exceptionally broad Japanese white pine
Pinus parviflora (Japanese white pine), Omiya Bonsai Art Museum, Japan. The museum gives its dimensions as 180 cm wide by 160 cm high, estimates its age at 500 years, and calls it the largest bonsai the museum owns. The Japan Tourism Agency describes the same tree as 1.8 m wide and 1.6 m tall, and as one of the largest in the collection. Those descriptions concern the Omiya collection, not a world record. Omiya Bonsai Art Museum collection record; Japan Tourism Agency, “Famous Bonsai Not to Be Missed”.

Todoroki: an ancient Ezo spruce at Omiya
Picea jezoensis (Ezo spruce), Omiya Bonsai Art Museum. The Japan Tourism Agency says the tree was taken from forests in Hokkaido roughly a century ago and estimates its age at around 1,000 years. Treat that figure as the institution’s estimate, not a precisely verified age. Japan Tourism Agency, “Famous Bonsai Not to Be Missed”.
Rocky Mountain limber pine: Chicago Botanic Garden
Pinus flexilis (limber pine), Chicago Botanic Garden, United States. The garden says this tree was collected in the Rocky Mountains and estimates its age at 600 to 1,000 years. That is an age estimate for this particular collection specimen; it does not establish that it is the world’s oldest bonsai. The garden’s collection includes nearly 300 trees across 160 taxa. Chicago Botanic Garden, “Bonsai Collection”.

Driftwood-style juniper: Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew
Juniperus rigida, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, United Kingdom. Kew describes this specimen as being in the sharimiki, or driftwood, style and says it is thought to be around 200 years old. Kew’s same collection page also says the collection’s oldest tree is 180 years old; the page does not reconcile that difference, so the two age claims should not be treated as one settled figure. Kew also describes an approximately 100-year-old Acer palmatum, two Juniperus chinensis specimens thought to be among the earliest bonsai imported into the UK in 1935, and a Japanese white pine thought to be over 75 years old. The collection has around 60 trees. Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, “Bonsai Collection”.

A separate record is easy to confuse with a record for one tree: Guinness World Records lists a display of 10,836 bonsai in Mysuru, India, achieved by Avadhoota Datta Peetham and His Holiness Dr. Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Swamiji on 14 June 2025. That is a count of trees in a display, not the size of a single bonsai. Guinness World Records, “Largest display of bonsai trees”.
Why a large bonsai still needs regular care
Bonsai are living plants, not finished sculptures. The U.S. National Arboretum describes ongoing care and training that includes watering, fertilization, pruning, and shaping branches with wire. A tree’s scale or age does not remove the need to maintain its health and form. U.S. National Arboretum, “National Bonsai & Penjing Museum”.
