For a healthy snake plant, give it bright, indirect light when possible, let its potting medium dry between waterings, and use a pot that drains freely. Snake plant (Dracaena trifasciata, formerly Sansevieria trifasciata) tolerates lower light, but it still needs light to grow.
Choose a spot with some light
Bright, indirect light is a good target for steady growth. Snake plants can adapt to lower-light rooms, but tolerance is not the same as thriving in darkness: a very dim corner may leave the plant declining over time. If the available spot is especially dark, move it closer to a window or provide suitable supplemental light.

Avoid assuming that direct, intense sun is necessary. The practical goal is a bright location without prolonged harsh exposure.

Overwatering is a common cause of snake plant failure. Check the medium rather than relying on a fixed weekly schedule: when it has dried out, water thoroughly, then let excess water drain away. Do not leave the pot standing in water. Persistently wet soil can lead to root rot.
#1 Best Overall
- HARDY INDOOR PLANT: Sansevieria Laurentii is a drought tolerant, durable, and adaptable houseplant for beginners
- GREAT FOR BUSY LIFESTYLES: This drought tolerant and resilient plant is easy to grow
- VARIEGATED SNAKE PLANT: This real plant showcases tall green leaves bordered with bright yellow edges
- EASY PLANT CARE: Thrives in low, medium, and bright light and requires minimal watering
- AIR-PURIFYING PLANT: Helps remove common indoor pollutants and supports a healthier home environment
How quickly the medium dries depends on the light, temperature, pot size, and mix. In winter, water much less often and continue to check the soil before watering; the plant’s slower seasonal growth usually means it needs less water.
Use a draining mix and container
The key requirement is drainage, not a particular brand or formula. A cactus or succulent potting mix is a practical option, while regular potting mix can also work if the setup does not keep the roots wet. Choose a container with functional drainage holes so excess water can escape.

A draining pot and mix reduce the risk of water collecting around the roots, but they do not compensate for watering before the medium has dried.

Propagate by division or leaf cuttings
Division and leaf cuttings are both options. If the plant is variegated and you want to retain its leaf pattern, choose division: leaf sections can produce plain green growth instead of reproducing the variegation.
Division
Separate a rooted section from the clump and pot it up. This is the preferable approach when preserving a variegated plant’s pattern matters.

Leaf sections
Iowa State Extension recommends early spring as an ideal time, although other seasons can work. Its procedure is to cut a healthy leaf into 3- to 4-inch sections, keep track of which end was nearest the base, dip the lower end in rooting hormone, and insert it 1 to 2 inches into moistened rooting medium. Place the sections somewhere warm with bright, indirect light and higher humidity, and check that the medium does not dry out. New plantlets may appear after about two months; that timing is guidance for the described method, not a guaranteed result. Once rooted, the pieces can be potted in regular soil. Iowa State Extension’s houseplant propagation guidance describes the method.

North Carolina Extension classifies snake plant as having low-severity poison characteristics. That does not mean it should be treated as harmless. Keep it out of reach of children and pets who might chew it, and contact an appropriate poison-control or veterinary service if ingestion occurs. North Carolina Extension’s plant profile uses the current botanical name Dracaena trifasciata and lists Sansevieria trifasciata as its former name.
