What’s actually slowing this PC down?

First find where the water is escaping: dry the outside of the tank, then watch the supply connection, tank bolts and tank-to-bowl joint while the tank refills and after a flush. A leak at one of those points usually calls for a matching connection, washer or gasket repair. If water is instead running into the bowl and the toilet keeps refilling, check the flush seal, water level, fill valve and refill hose before replacing parts.
Find the leak before replacing parts
Dry the tank and nearby fittings completely. Then watch for fresh water during a refill and after flushing; a small mirror or dry tissue can help reveal water tracking along the underside of a fitting.

- Supply line or fill-valve inlet: Water appearing at the coupling or tracking down the supply tube points to a connection or line leak. Check the fitting and tube, but shut off the supply before tightening or replacing anything. Home Depot’s repair guide covers the supply connection and tank repairs.
- Tank bolt: Water forming around a bolt suggests a failed or deteriorated washer. A washer or bolt that is damaged should be replaced rather than relying on extra tightening.
- Tank-to-bowl joint: Water emerging from the broad joint beneath the tank points to the central gasket or spud washer, or its seating. Repair generally requires removing the tank.
- Water in the bowl with periodic or constant refilling: This is an internal leak, not necessarily a floor leak. A flush-valve seal, high water level, fill valve that does not shut off, or binding trip lever can cause it. Kohler’s constant-running troubleshooting identifies these possible causes.
- Slow water loss into the bowl despite an apparently sound seal: Check that the refill hose is clipped and routed correctly. If its end is below the waterline, it can siphon water into the bowl. Routing depends on the valve design; follow the toilet or valve maker’s instructions. See Kohler’s refill-hose guidance.
Fix a leak at the supply connection or fill valve
Close the toilet’s shutoff valve before working on the supply connection. If the leak is at the tube coupling, inspect the connection and supply tube for damage. A loose fitting may need careful reseating; a deteriorated tube or leaking valve connection may need replacement. Use parts compatible with the toilet and valve, and follow the maker’s instructions rather than assuming fittings or internal designs are interchangeable.

If the tank keeps running into the bowl because the fill valve will not shut off, check that the trip lever moves freely and that water is not rising into the overflow. Debris under the fill-valve cap or a faulty valve can also prevent shutoff. Kohler advises cleaning or replacing the fill valve for constant running; see its troubleshooting instructions.

Fix leaking tank bolts or the tank-to-bowl gasket
Leaks at the bolts and at the large joint beneath the tank are separate sealing problems. Bolt washers seal the individual fasteners; the larger gasket seals the tank outlet to the bowl. Replacing the wrong one will not address the leak.
Replace a leaking bolt washer
Shut off the water, flush, and remove the remaining tank water with a sponge. Keep a bucket and towels nearby. Replace deteriorated bolt washers and inspect the hardware, following the toilet manufacturer’s instructions. Tighten the bolts evenly and only enough to seat the parts securely. Porcelain can crack under excessive or uneven force; Oatey’s repair guidance warns against overtightening.

Replace the tank-to-bowl gasket
This repair involves disconnecting the supply line and removing the tank, so drain it first and take care when lifting the heavy, breakable ceramic. Replace the gasket with one matched to the toilet, check the bolt washers while the tank is off, then reseat the tank and tighten hardware evenly. Refill and check the joint and bolts for fresh water. If you are not comfortable lifting or reseating the tank, use a plumber.

A toilet that periodically refills may be losing tank water through the flush valve even if the floor stays dry. Kohler’s guidance for occasional running recommends checking chain slack, water level and the seal. A flapper chain that is too tight can keep the seal from closing; a dirty, worn or poorly seated flapper or canister seal can also let water pass. Clean or replace the seal with a part compatible with the toilet’s mechanism.

If the water level rises to the overflow, adjust the fill level according to the valve instructions. If the fill valve continues to run after the level is corrected, clean or replace it as directed by its manufacturer. Also check the refill hose position: the correct clip or routing varies by valve style, and a submerged hose end can siphon water into the bowl. For model-specific parts or instructions, use the toilet’s model information and the manufacturer’s documentation; the EPA WaterSense toilet resource discusses worn flappers and water loss but does not identify one universal replacement part.
Use a safe repair sequence
- Close the toilet shutoff valve. If it will not stop the water, do not open a tank connection. Use the home’s main shutoff if appropriate, or call a plumber.
- Flush to lower the water in the tank and sponge out what remains. Put towels down and keep a bucket ready before disconnecting the supply line.
- Confirm the leak location, then replace only the matching failed part: supply connector or fill valve, bolt washer, tank-to-bowl gasket, or flapper/canister seal.
- Use the toilet model and manufacturer instructions to select compatible parts. Flappers, canisters and fill valves are not universal.
- Reseat fittings and tank hardware evenly without forcing porcelain bolts. Turn the supply back on, watch the tank as it fills, and inspect again after flushing.
When to stop and call a plumber
- The tank is cracked or the porcelain is damaged.
- The shutoff valve will not stop the water.
- The tank is too heavy or awkward for you to remove and reseat safely.
- A correctly matched replacement part is installed but the leak continues.
Cracked porcelain and a failed shutoff can make continued DIY work unsafe or ineffective. A plumber can identify whether the remaining leak is at a fitting, seal or damaged ceramic component.
