River birch (Betula nigra) grows best in a sunny spot with reliably moist soil and plenty of room. It is a large deciduous tree native to eastern North America, valued for its tolerance of wet ground and distinctive peeling bark—but it is not a tree for a small planting space or a site that stays deeply flooded.
Choose a suitable site and allow for mature size
River birch is naturally associated with streambanks, floodplains, and moist lowlands. For strong growth, plant it where the soil stays moist and the tree receives ample sun. USDA NRCS describes the species as intolerant of shade and best adapted to moist soils. Its preferred soils are acidic, but the cited guidance does not establish a narrow pH target for home gardens.

Plan for a substantial tree: the USDA Forest Service gives a usual mature height of 50–80 feet (15.2–24.4 m), though the eventual size depends on site and form. Leave room for the canopy and keep the planting clear of structures, overhead lines, and other locations where its mature scale would create a conflict.
River birch tolerates wet-soil conditions and moderate flooding, but that does not mean prolonged submersion is harmless. The Forest Service describes soils near field capacity through the year as typical habitat, while USDA NRCS emphasizes moist soils. Choose a damp site, not one where the root zone will remain deeply underwater.

- These are ready to plant and should be put in the ground according to the included instructions upon arrival. All pictures are of fully grown plants. Sizes shipped are in the title and description. Deciduous plants do not have leaves in the winter.
- California orders will be packaged according to their state regulations.
- Thrives in zones 4 through 9 with full to part sun.
- Size shipped is 3 feet tall and double boxed for safe transport.
- Do not transplant into another container, only the ground. We ensure a successful transplant for 30 days if the included planting instructions are followed with the correct location and water. Deciduous plants bought dormant during the winter are expected to leaf out in the spring under the same conditions.
Plant and establish the tree
Choose planting stock suited to your space and local conditions. Set the tree in a sunny location with moist soil and enough room for its expected height and canopy. Keep the root area from drying out while the tree establishes; use local planting guidance for details suited to your soil and climate.
North Carolina State Extension recommends bark mulch and soaker hoses to help keep the root zone cool and moist. Keep mulch over the root area without piling it against the trunk. These measures support steady moisture without requiring a fixed irrigation volume.

Water according to soil moisture
Keep the soil consistently moist, with particular attention to young trees and dry periods. Check the root zone and adjust watering to rainfall, soil texture, drainage, weather, and tree size. The cited official and extension sources do not establish one irrigation amount or calendar that applies everywhere, so a universal weekly schedule would be misleading.

River birch tolerates wet conditions, but extended inundation can stunt seedlings. If water stands around the tree for long periods, address the site’s drainage and flooding pattern rather than assuming the species will thrive indefinitely underwater.

Prune sparingly and account for sap flow
River birch generally needs little pruning. Remove branches when needed for structure, safety, or clearance rather than pruning on a routine schedule. Timing advice varies: Virginia Tech cautions against spring pruning while sap is flowing; North Carolina State Extension recommends dormant-season pruning when cuts are necessary; USDA NRCS advises summer pruning because birches bleed when sap is flowing. Check local extension guidance for the appropriate timing in your climate.
Watch for leaf problems and pests
Anthracnose leaf blight is identified as the principal leaf disease in the USDA Forest Service species account. Regional sources also mention leaf miners, aphids, and birch skeletonizer as possible insect problems. Their presence is not inevitable, and the Forest Service account reports no serious insect pests in its silvics context.

Yellowing foliage may be associated with chlorosis on calcareous or high-pH soils, according to USDA NRCS. Consider the site and soil conditions when diagnosing symptoms; do not assume every discolored leaf indicates an insect or disease problem.

Compare cultivars with your site in mind
Heritage is a recognized ornamental selection. Virginia Tech describes it as popular and fast-growing, with showy bark, handsome foliage, and yellow fall color. Horticultural selections are available, but the cited sources do not establish one cultivar as universally best or compare performance across all regions.
