For this guide, “money tree” means Pachira aquatica, also known as Malabar chestnut or Guiana chestnut. Give it bright, indirect light, keep its potting mix evenly moist but well drained, and water when the top inch of soil is dry rather than following a fixed schedule. These basics help avoid the two common extremes: scorched leaves and roots left standing in water.
Identify your money tree
Common names can refer to different plants. The care advice here is for Pachira aquatica, a tropical tree native from southern Mexico through tropical South America, where it grows in wetlands and along waterways. North Carolina State University Extension notes that it is commonly grown indoors as a houseplant or bonsai; indoor plants typically reach about 6–8 feet and are unlikely to flower or fruit. NC State Extension’s plant profile also lists other unrelated plants that may be called a money plant.
Give it the right light, warmth, and humidity
Choose indirect light
Place the plant where it receives indirect light or a mix of sun and shade. Prolonged direct sunlight can scorch its leaves, so avoid a spot exposed to strong sun for much of the day. If leaves show damage, check the light exposure along with watering and other conditions rather than assuming one cause.
Keep it warm and humid
NC State Extension gives 65–75°F as a favorable temperature range and describes the plant as one that thrives in humid conditions. Protect it from cold exposure; as a tropical plant, it is not suited to chilly conditions.

Choose a draining pot and soil
Use a potting mix that holds some moisture while draining freely. Peat moss, perlite, loam, or sand are among the possible components named by NC State Extension; no single brand or fixed recipe is required by that guidance.
Use a container with drainage holes and empty excess water from the saucer or outer pot. A pot that lets water escape, sized to fit the root ball, is more useful than a decorative cachepot that traps water around the roots. Persistent standing water can lead to root rot.

Water when the soil needs it
Check the soil before watering instead of relying on a weekly calendar. An Extension response on indoor money tree care recommends watering thoroughly when the top inch of soil is dry. Let excess water drain away, then empty the saucer or outer pot so the roots do not sit in it.
Do not let the mix become excessively dry, either: NC State Extension notes that overly dry soil can contribute to leaf drop. How quickly the pot dries depends on its conditions, so the soil check is more dependable than a fixed interval.

Feed and repot only as needed
The University of Minnesota Extension response suggests a complete liquid fertilizer at half strength every four weeks during the growing period, typically spring to midsummer. It says feeding every eight weeks in fall and winter is optional. These are recommendations, not a requirement for every plant; avoid overfeeding.
If the plant has outgrown its pot, the same response suggests considering repotting in early spring. Move it to a container 1–2 inches wider in diameter and use fresh, well-draining soil.

Diagnose yellow leaves and leaf drop by checking conditions
Yellowing and leaf drop do not point to one certain cause. NC State Extension lists overly dry soil as a possible contributor to leaf drop, and low humidity or inadequate nutrients as possible contributors to yellow leaves. Pests and disease can also affect the plant.
Start with observable conditions: check the light, feel the soil, confirm that the pot drains, and look for water trapped in a saucer or outer pot. If the plant was recently repotted, temporary stress is also possible. Inspect leaves and stems for pests such as aphids, mealybugs, scale, or fungus gnats. Potential diseases listed by NC State include anthracnose, powdery mildew, and root rot associated with standing water. Treat these as possibilities to investigate, not diagnoses based on a single symptom.

Propagate or shape your plant
NC State Extension lists softwood cuttings, layering, and seeds as propagation methods. If taking a cutting, clean pruning shears are a practical option; no particular brand or specialized tool is required by the cited guidance.
Braided trunks are a cultivated presentation, not a guarantee of flowers. NC State Extension says a money tree will not flower indoors or if braided, and reports that outdoor trees flower after four to five years. Indoor plants are unlikely to flower or fruit.
