For washable clothing, blot up excess wine, sponge or soak the stain in cool water, pretreat it with a prewash stain remover, and wash according to the care label. Check the stain before drying; if it remains, repeat the treatment. Heat can make a remaining mark harder to remove.
How to remove a fresh red wine stain
- Blot, don’t rub. Remove the garment when practical and gently blot excess wine with a clean cloth. Rubbing can spread the stain and damage fabric. The American Cleaning Institute recommends treating stains promptly because they are easier to remove before they have time to set (Stain Removal Guide).
- Use cool water. Sponge the stain with cool water, or soak the garment in cool water for about 30 minutes, following the wine-specific guidance from the American Cleaning Institute (Wine stain guidance).
- Pretreat the stain. Apply a prewash stain remover according to its label and check that it is suitable for the garment. Liquid laundry detergent is another pretreatment option in the institute’s general beverage-stain guidance (Stain Removal Guide).
- Wash according to the care label. Follow the garment’s washing instructions and the treatment product’s directions.
- Inspect before drying. If any stain remains, repeat the treatment and wash again. Do not put the item in the dryer until the mark is gone.
What to do if the stain is old or still visible
Older stains may respond to pretreatment or soaking before laundering, but removal is not guaranteed. Try a fabric-safe pretreatment or cool-water soak, wash according to the care label, and inspect the garment before drying. Repeat if needed.
A wine stain can seem to disappear while residue remains in the fabric. That residue may oxidize and later show up as yellow or brown discoloration, according to the American Cleaning Institute’s Laundry Basics. This is another reason to check the garment after washing rather than assuming a faint or vanished mark is gone.
When bleach is—and isn’t—appropriate
Use bleach only if both the garment care label and the bleach product label say it is safe. The American Cleaning Institute notes that suitability depends on the garment’s fibers, finishes, and trims; oxygen bleach is gentler than chlorine bleach, but it still must be compatible with the item. Consult its bleach-use guidance and follow the product directions. Do not assume chlorine bleach is safe for colored garments, delicate fabrics, or every white item.

Garments that are not washable
This process is for washable clothing. If the care label says dry-clean-only or gives special-care instructions, follow the label and consult a qualified cleaner rather than applying a home treatment the label does not support.
