How to Get Rid of Stubborn Weeds Without Ruining Your Lawn

Identify the weed and your grass before choosing a control method. Hand-pull small young weeds, strengthen thin turf, and use herbicides only when the label permits both the target weed and lawn grass.

To get rid of stubborn weeds without damaging your lawn, first identify both the weed and your grass, then choose the least disruptive suitable method. Pull a few young weeds by hand, improve thin or stressed turf, and use a herbicide only if its label names both the target weed and your lawn grass. No single treatment works safely on every weed in every lawn.

Identify the weed and the grass before treating

Pause before spraying or pulling. Photograph the weed and identify your lawn’s grass; a local cooperative extension service can help if you are unsure. Broadleaf weeds, grassy weeds such as crabgrass, and sedges can require different approaches. Herbicides also vary in which turf species they can be used on.

Look for conditions that may have let weeds establish: bare patches, thin turf, shade, compacted soil, poor drainage, or mowing and watering practices that do not suit the grass. A weed’s presence does not, by itself, prove a particular soil deficiency. UC IPM explains that weed management starts with identification and prevention: UC IPM’s guidance on weed management in lawns.

Choose a control method that fits the infestation

Situation Practical first choice What to watch for
A few young, isolated weeds Hand-pull or use a suitable weeding tool Remove the roots where possible, and avoid leaving unnecessary bare soil.
Mature or spreading weeds Identify the plant and plan control around its growth and spread Pulling may be impractical; some perennial weeds regrow from roots left behind.
A thin lawn or repeated weed patches Correct the conditions weakening the turf and repair bare spots Removing visible weeds alone may not prevent their return.
A known weed that persists in established turf Consider a label-approved selective herbicide for that weed and grass Check the exact product label; “lawn weed killer” does not mean safe for every grass.
Crabgrass not yet germinated Consider a suitable preemergent before germination Timing is regional, and a preemergent will not remove established crabgrass.

Pull a small number of young weeds

For a few young plants, hand removal is a sensible first step. Pull before flowers or seeds form, and try to remove the roots. Moist soil can make the job easier. A weeding tool can help with small infestations, but removing a mature, dense patch this way may be difficult, and some perennials can regrow from root fragments. University of Maryland Extension describes hand removal as an option for small crabgrass infestations: its crabgrass guidance.

Repair larger or recurring problem areas

If weeds are taking hold across a patch or returning in the same places, address the turf as well as the plants. Repair bare spots with grass suited to your region and site, and consider whether shade, drainage, compaction, or an unsuitable grass type is limiting coverage. Dense, healthy turf leaves fewer openings for weeds.

Make lawn care support dense turf

  • Water deeply and less often. Frequent, light watering can encourage shallow-rooted turf. Adjust watering to local weather, soil, and grass type.
  • Mow at the right height for your grass. UC IPM advises removing no more than one-third of the grass blade in a mowing. Do not apply that as a fixed mowing height; suitable height depends on the turf species.
  • Address compaction where it is a problem. Compacted soil can make it harder for grass to grow well; choose a remedy suited to the site.
  • Avoid blanket fertilizer prescriptions. Fertilizer needs depend on grass, season, soil, and local rules. A weed is not enough evidence to diagnose what nutrients the lawn needs.

University of Delaware Cooperative Extension also emphasizes turf health and the relationship between lawn conditions and weeds in its turf weed-control guidance.

What kills weeds but not grass?

A selective herbicide can control certain weeds while sparing specified turf grasses when it is used exactly as labeled. That is not a blanket guarantee: the product must be approved for the weed and the particular grass in your lawn. A nonselective herbicide can injure or kill grass as well as weeds, so it is generally not an appropriate spot treatment on intact turf.

Use spot treatment only when the label allows it, and follow all label directions and applicable state requirements. The EPA label for one registered product illustrates why instructions are product-specific; it is an example, not a recommendation for all lawns: EPA product label dated June 8, 2026. For Maryland-specific herbicide timing and label considerations, see University of Maryland Extension’s lawn weed herbicide options.

Crabgrass prevention depends on timing

A preemergent herbicide is meant to act before crabgrass germinates. University of Maryland Extension uses soil temperatures above 55°F for several days as a Maryland germination cue; that is regional guidance, not a universal calendar date or threshold for every location. Follow the product label for application and watering directions, and check its reseeding delay before treating if you plan to seed. Once crabgrass is established, a preemergent intended to prevent germination will not remove it.
