How to Deadhead Hydrangeas—and When to Do It

Deadhead by removing only the faded flower at the stem tip. For shaping, first identify whether your hydrangea blooms on old wood, new wood, or both.

To deadhead a hydrangea, snip off only the faded flower head at the tip of its stem. Do it after the bloom fades; it is an optional way to tidy the shrub, not a proven way to make it produce more flowers. The key is not to confuse deadheading with pruning: cutting farther down can remove buds that would flower next year.

How to deadhead a hydrangea

  1. Wait until the flower has faded and the plant is no longer displaying it at its best.
  2. Follow the flower stem down to its tip and make a neat cut just below the spent flower head. Leave the rest of the stem and its leaves in place.
  3. Repeat only for the blooms you want to remove. If you are unsure where to cut, remove the flower head alone rather than shortening the branch.

University of Maryland Extension says deadheading can be done after flowers fade on any hydrangea type and is not necessary for plant health (Pruning Hydrangeas). Small bypass pruning shears can make a clean cut, but no special tool is required by this guidance.

When to prune beyond the spent flower

Shaping or cutting back a hydrangea is different from deadheading. The safe timing depends on whether the plant flowers on old wood, new wood, or both. As Illinois Extension horticulture educator Ken Johnson put it, “Pruning hydrangeas can be confusing because each species should be pruned at a different time of the year” (Illinois Extension, July 15, 2020).

Hydrangea group Where next season’s flowers form General timing for shaping
Bigleaf (mophead and lacecap), oakleaf, and mountain Mostly on old wood—the previous year’s growth Prune substantially soon after flowering. Late cuts can remove next year’s buds; Illinois Extension notes that old-wood hydrangeas begin developing those buds in August and September.
Smooth and panicle On new wood—the current season’s growth Generally prune in late winter or early spring, before new growth begins.
Reblooming bigleaf or mountain cultivars On both old and current-season growth Maryland Extension describes pruning in early spring or after the first flush. Early pruning can delay flowering; mid-season pruning can shorten or interrupt reblooming.

These are broad species-group guidelines, not a substitute for identifying a particular cultivar. For more detail on timing and species, see UConn’s Hydrangea fact sheet and Maryland Extension’s pruning guidance.

If you are not sure which hydrangea you have

Do not make substantial cuts until you identify the plant. Flower shape, leaves, and other species features can help distinguish it; reblooming cultivars may flower on both old and current-season growth. If you only want to remove an unattractive spent bloom, the conservative tip-only cut is supported for all types. Avoid shortening stems just to make the shrub look even.

Will deadheading make a hydrangea bloom more?

Deadheading removes spent flowers; the cited extension guidance does not establish it as a way to increase the number of blooms. It is optional and does not need to be done for plant health. If a hydrangea has few flowers, missed blooms can have other causes, including mistimed pruning, frost, deer, drought, or other weather damage. Maryland Extension discusses bud loss and other problems in Hydrangea: Identify and Manage Problems.
