The most effective way to get rid of mice in walls is not to poison the wall cavity. Instead, confirm that mice are present, place snap traps where they emerge or travel, remove food and nesting opportunities, seal the openings they use, and monitor for new signs. This approach reduces the risk of a mouse dying inside an inaccessible wall and avoids unnecessary exposure to rodenticide.
You usually do not need to open the wall. Treat the wall as part of a larger route connecting the exterior, basement or crawl space, attic, utility penetrations, and living areas. The job is to interrupt that route safely and permanently.

Before you start: make sure the noise is mice
Scratching or running sounds at night can indicate mice, but they can also come from insects, birds, squirrels, bats, or plumbing and heating systems. Look for evidence in accessible areas rather than cutting into drywall immediately.

- Small, dark droppings near cabinets, appliances, baseboards, pipes, or stored items
- Gnaw marks on food packaging, wood, wiring, insulation, or plastic
- Shredded paper, fabric, insulation, or other nesting material
- A stale or musky odor, especially near a wall, ceiling, or enclosed cabinet
- Small holes around floors, walls, pipes, wires, vents, doors, windows, or the foundation
- New droppings appearing after an area has been cleaned
Fresh droppings after cleaning are particularly useful: they indicate that activity is continuing. Do not sweep or vacuum dry droppings, urine, or nesting material. Dry cleanup can send contaminated particles into the air.

The five methods, in the right order
1. Monitor accessible evidence and find the travel route
Start by mapping where signs appear. Check behind and beneath appliances, along baseboards, inside lower cabinets, around water and heating pipes, near utility penetrations, in garages, and at basement, crawl-space, attic, and wall-floor junctions.
Clean accessible contamination using the wet-disinfection procedure below, then inspect the same locations over the next several days. You can also use a small amount of food as trap bait and look for disturbance, but avoid leaving loose food around as a long-term monitoring method.
Mice commonly travel close to walls and objects rather than crossing open floors. Concentrating traps and inspection on the areas with droppings, gnawing, or nesting material is more effective than scattering equipment randomly throughout the building.

Mice can enter openings approximately 1/4 inch wide—about the width of a pencil. Inspect both sides of the suspected route. A hole inside a cabinet may connect to a larger gap around a pipe, while an exterior foundation or siding gap may lead into a wall cavity.
Pay particular attention to:
- Plumbing, electrical, cable, and heating or cooling penetrations
- Wall-to-floor and wall-to-ceiling joints
- Foundation cracks and gaps around sill plates
- Attic and crawl-space vents
- Basement windows, garage doors, exterior doors, and thresholds
- Gaps around dryer vents, exhaust vents, and utility conduits
- Damaged screens, soffits, fascia, siding, and roof-to-wall details
Use materials that rodents cannot easily chew, such as copper or stainless-steel mesh, hardware cloth, sheet metal, mortar, or a suitable sealant system. For larger gaps, fasten a rigid material in place rather than filling the entire opening with a soft product. Spray foam, wood, plastic, and similar materials should not be the only barrier where mice can reach and gnaw them; foam may be useful as part of a properly supported repair, but it is not a reliable stand-alone rodent barrier.

- Effective and Efficient Pest Control: Our small mouse and insect glue traps are designed to capture and eliminate a wide range of pests, including mice, roaches, ants, and other small insects. They are highly effective in preventing infestations and keeping your home and environment free from unwanted pests.
- Enhanced Attraction: Our small mouse and insect glue traps are pre-baited with an irresistible peanut butter scent, making them even more effective in attracting pests. The delicious aroma of peanut butter is irresistible to many pests, increasing the chances of a successful capture. With our enhanced attraction feature, you can say goodbye to pests and hello to a pest-free environment.
- Non-toxic Super Glue: Our mouse traps use super glue that can withstand the cold weather. Once the mouse or insect is stuck, it can no longer break free, and these glues are non-toxic, harmless to your children and pets. They are safe for use inside your house.
- Where to Place: We suggest you position sticky traps along active rodent and insects runways, such as along walls, under large kitchen appliances, in cupboards, and other areas where rodents and insects travel. Be sure to fit the glue trap flush against a wall where they will run over and stick to it.
- Wide Application: These heavy-duty trays come out as pairs, traps can be placed in areas where the mice are most likely to run, along walls, or skirting boards where pests are active. Ideal for the basement, residences, warehouses, restaurants, houses, indoor, industrial buildings, and attic use. Effective in catching everything from snakes, mice, rats, lizards, crickets, scorpions, spiders, etc.
For small utility gaps, rodent-proof mesh can be fitted tightly around the penetration and secured with an appropriate sealant or mechanical repair. Do not block vents that are required for safe appliance operation, and do not damage wiring, pipes, or fire-rated assemblies while sealing.
Inspect doors as well. A properly fitted rodent-proof door sweep or threshold seal can close a common route at an exterior or garage door, but it must still allow the door to open, close, and drain correctly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSequence matters. If mice are currently inside the structure, do not blindly seal the only suspected opening and assume the problem is solved. First place traps at accessible travel routes and monitor activity. Then complete exclusion once you have considered whether mice could be trapped in a cavity. The safest sequence varies when the entry point is unknown, inaccessible, or connected to a large infestation.
3. Set multiple snap traps outside the wall cavity
For indoor mice, snap traps are generally the preferred first-line control method because they can remove the animal without leaving a carcass inside a wall. Set several traps where mice emerge or travel:
- Along baseboards and beside walls
- Near fresh droppings or gnaw marks
- Behind refrigerators, ranges, washers, and other appliances—only where traps remain safe and accessible
- Inside or beside lower cabinets and utility areas
- Near the suspected wall opening, but not deep inside an unopened cavity
Orient a trap with the trigger toward the wall, or place it perpendicular to the wall with the baited trigger closest to the travel route. A small amount of peanut butter is commonly used as bait. More than one trap is appropriate when signs indicate an active infestation; mice may avoid a trap that is placed alone or may use several nearby routes.

Glue boards are not a preferred solution because they may leave a live, distressed animal that you must handle. Live traps do not solve the building problem unless every entry route is sealed; a released mouse can return or move into another part of the structure.
For readers ready to address activity at accessible wall edges, mouse snap traps are the type of product to look for—not traps or poison placed inside a closed wall.
4. Remove food, water, and nesting opportunities
Sanitation will not usually remove an established infestation by itself, but it makes trapping and monitoring more effective. Store these items in thick plastic, glass, or metal containers with tight-fitting lids:
- Human food and pantry goods
- Pet food and treats
- Birdseed and livestock or animal feed
- Bird-feeder supplies and similar outdoor food sources
Clean crumbs and spills promptly, secure garbage, repair leaks, and do not leave pet food or water bowls out overnight if mice are active. Reduce clutter in basements, garages, attics, and utility rooms so there are fewer protected nesting sites.

Outside, move brush, debris, woodpiles, and stored materials away from the building where practical. Keep compost and garbage secured, and avoid conditions that create a sheltered, food-rich strip directly against the foundation. These changes support exclusion; they are not substitutes for sealing and trapping.
5. Use poison cautiously—or bring in a professional
Rodenticides can create a serious problem when mice are inside walls: the animal may die in an inaccessible cavity, producing a persistent odor and attracting insects. Poison can also expose children, pets, and non-target animals if it is used incorrectly.
If chemical control is considered, use only a product legally available for your location, follow its label exactly, and use it only in the placement and type of tamper-resistant rodent bait station permitted by that label. Never place loose bait inside a wall or improvise a poison application. For a typical indoor wall infestation, trapping and exclusion are usually the more controllable options.
Call a licensed rodent-control professional when:
- Mice have entered heating, ventilation, or air-conditioning ducts
- There is heavy contamination or a large amount of nesting material
- You suspect a dead mouse in a wall or ceiling and cannot reach it safely
- Wiring or insulation may have been damaged
- Activity continues after careful trapping, sanitation, and exclusion
- The entry route is inaccessible or opening the cavity appears necessary
When hiring someone, verify local licensing requirements, insurance, the intended exclusion work, how contaminated material will be handled, and whether repairs are included. HVAC involvement deserves particular caution: do not disturb contaminated material inside a ventilation system yourself.
How to clean mouse droppings and nesting material safely
Use wet disinfection rather than dry sweeping or vacuuming.

- Ventilate when feasible. Open doors or windows in the enclosed area for approximately 30 minutes, then leave the area during ventilation.
- Protect yourself. Wear rubber or plastic gloves. For substantial contamination, ask a professional about additional protective equipment and procedures.
- Wet the material completely. Spray droppings, urine, nesting material, or a dead mouse with an EPA-registered disinfectant, or use a freshly prepared bleach solution of 1.5 cups household bleach per gallon of water—approximately one part bleach to nine parts water.
- Wait for the required contact time. Follow the disinfectant label or bleach instructions rather than wiping immediately.
- Wipe up. Use paper towels and place the waste in a covered container or sealed bag.
- Double-bag a carcass. Spray the dead mouse and surrounding material, place the carcass and waste in a plastic bag, seal it, place that bag inside a second bag, and seal again. Follow local disposal requirements.
- Finish safely. Wash gloved hands before removing gloves, remove the gloves, and wash bare hands thoroughly afterward.
Never mix bleach with ammonia or other cleaners. If the contamination is extensive, has entered HVAC equipment, or involves a large amount of insulation, stop and arrange professional cleanup. A household cleaning product does not make heavy contamination automatically safe to handle.
If you need supplies for a small, accessible cleanup, choose an EPA-registered disinfectant and disposable gloves suitable for the task. Product selection does not replace the wet-cleaning procedure or professional help for substantial contamination.
What not to rely on
- Peppermint oil: it may smell unpleasant to mice temporarily, but it does not close entry routes or remove an established infestation.
- Ultrasonic repellents: they are not a dependable primary solution for mice in walls.
- General insect sprays: they do not control a mouse infestation.
- Loose poison: never improvise bait placement inside a wall or use it where children, pets, or wildlife can reach it.
- Dry vacuuming: do not vacuum or sweep dry droppings, urine, nesting material, or carcasses.
- Casual wall demolition: cutting into drywall can spread contamination, damage plumbing or wiring, and create unnecessary repair work. Open a cavity only when the problem requires it and the work can be done safely.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will mice leave a wall on their own?
They may move between the wall and the rest of the building, but waiting rarely fixes the cause. Trap mice at accessible travel routes, remove food and nesting opportunities, and seal the openings connecting the cavity to the building or exterior.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Should I put mouse poison inside the wall?
No. A poisoned mouse can die in an inaccessible cavity, causing odor and attracting insects. Never use loose bait inside a wall. If rodenticide is considered, use only a label-compliant tamper-resistant bait station, and consider professional control.
How long does it take to get rid of mice in walls?
You should see whether trapping is working within several days, but complete control depends on the size of the infestation and how quickly entry points are found and repaired. Continue monitoring after the last catch; new droppings indicate that the problem is not finished.
Do I need to open the wall?
Usually not. Open a wall only when the cavity must be accessed for a carcass, substantial contamination, damaged wiring or insulation, or another building problem. A professional can assess the risk before demolition.
The Bottom Line
Trap mice where they can be reached, seal the routes they use, remove food and shelter, clean contamination with wet disinfection, and monitor for new signs. Avoid putting poison into a wall. Persistent activity, HVAC contamination, damaged wiring, heavy infestation, or an inaccessible carcass is a reason to call a qualified professional.
