Start by finding the refrigerator’s complete model number on its rating label and opening the matching GE owner’s manual. GE Profile icemakers do not all use the same controls: your model may have a feeler arm, a toggle switch or a refrigerator-panel setting. Work through the checks below in order, using the manual for model-specific directions.
Why is the icemaker in my refrigerator not working?
Begin with the simple checks before assuming an internal part has failed. The right control and procedure depend on the refrigerator model.
1. Confirm that the icemaker is on
Check the icemaker’s switch, control-panel setting or feeler arm. On designs with a feeler arm, raising it turns the icemaker off and lowering it turns it on; toggle-switch orientation varies. Follow the manual for your model rather than relying on a universal switch position. See GE’s instructions for turning an icemaker on or off.
2. Clear the bin, arm and ejector area
Make sure the ice bin is seated correctly and does not obstruct the feeler arm or paddle. An obstruction can tell the icemaker to pause production. Also look for cubes stuck in the mold or ejector mechanism; do not force a jammed part.

- The GE WR30X39385 Icemaker is a genuine OEM part,
- This icemaker assembly automatically produces and ejects ice cubes into the freezer bin, ensuring continuous supply with minimal user intervention,
- The WR30X39385 is compatible with select GE refrigerators, including models GDE21EGKTRBB, GNE21FMKTFES, and QNE27JYMXFFS, guaranteeing proper fit and function,
- When replacing this unit, always disconnect power to the refrigerator, allow components to defrost, and follow detailed instructions to ensure proper alignment of fill tube and secure wiring connections,
- Always double-check compatibility with your specific appliance model number before purchasing replacement parts. You can often find this information in your appliance's owner's manual or by using the compatibility tools provided by appliance parts retailers.
3. Check the freezer temperature and startup time
GE recommends setting the fresh-food compartment to 37°F and the freezer to 0°F. The icemaker must reach about 16°F before a cycle begins, so a freezer that is too warm can delay or prevent ice production. These are GE’s recommended settings and operating guidance, not a guarantee of a particular production rate; check your model’s manual for its controls.
After a new installation, allow roughly 24–48 hours for the refrigerator to cool and the icemaker to begin operating. GE’s guidance is in its no-ice troubleshooting article and icemaker fill guidance.

Why are my dispenser and icemaker not getting water?
Check the water supply
Confirm that the refrigerator’s water-supply valve is open and that the line is not kinked or blocked. If the dispenser also has weak or no flow, that can point to a supply or filter problem rather than an icemaker-only issue. GE’s refrigerator troubleshooting and support covers dispenser and icemaker concerns.
Test the filter before replacing it
If your refrigerator has a water filter and a compatible bypass plug, use the bypass test described in the manual or GE guidance. If dispenser flow improves with the filter bypassed, the filter may be restricting flow and should be replaced with one compatible with the complete refrigerator model number. GE gives six months as its filter interval, but sediment can cause clogging sooner; use the manual and actual flow to guide replacement. Do not buy a filter by brand alone.

Consider a frozen fill tube or call for service
A frozen fill tube can keep water from reaching the icemaker. GE says checking it requires removing the icemaker and recommends that a service technician handle the check. Contact service if basic checks do not resolve the problem or you suspect a frozen tube; do not dismantle the icemaker based on a general troubleshooting article.
What if the dispenser works but the icemaker still does not fill?
That symptom narrows the checks, but does not identify a failed component by itself. Confirm the icemaker is on, the arm or paddle is unobstructed, and the freezer is cold enough. If the mold is visibly empty, GE describes a model-dependent diagnostic: pour about four ounces of cold water into the mold and wait two to three hours. If the icemaker freezes and ejects that batch, GE says the icemaker itself is working, directing attention toward the water-fill path. Follow your model’s manual and use caution around the mold; do not try this if the manual advises against it.

What if ice forms but sticks or does not eject?
Look for cubes stuck in the mold or ejector area and make sure the bin or ice is not blocking the arm or paddle. A blocked arm or paddle can pause production. Avoid prying or forcing the mechanism; if the obstruction cannot be cleared safely or the issue continues, consult the model’s manual or arrange service.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What if ice production is slow or the cubes are small or hollow?
Check that the freezer is at GE’s recommended 0°F setting and that the refrigerator’s water supply is open and unobstructed. If dispenser flow is weak as well, test the filter with a bypass plug where applicable before replacing it. Temperature and water-flow issues can affect filling and ice formation, but these symptoms alone do not establish which part is at fault.
