A garbage disposal that is not working is usually dealing with a power problem, overload, jam, foreign object, leak, or downstream drain clog. Identify the symptom first, then disconnect power before any inspection, reset, or jam-clearing attempt.
A garbage disposal that is not working is usually experiencing one of five different problems: it is completely silent, it hums without grinding, it runs but does not break up food, it rattles or vibrates, or it leaks and leaves the sink draining slowly. The correct fix depends on the symptom.

- Turn the disposal switch off.
- If the unit has a plug under the sink, unplug it.
- If it is hardwired, turn off the correct circuit breaker. Do not rely on the wall switch alone.
- Never put your hand or fingers into the grinding chamber, even when the disposal appears stopped.
Use a flashlight to inspect the opening and long-handled tongs or pliers to remove a visible object. If you see smoke, damaged wiring, an active leak near electrical parts, or a burned odor, leave the power off and arrange professional service.
If the disposal is completely silent
A silent disposal may not be receiving power, or its overload protection may have tripped.

- Check the switch or air switch. Make sure the wall switch is on when you are ready to test the unit. If the disposal uses an air switch, check that the button and tubing have not become disconnected.
- Check the plug under the sink. With the circuit safely off, confirm that the disposal’s plug has not pulled loose. Some sink outlets have separate switched receptacles, so do not assume a nearby outlet controls the disposal.
- Check the circuit breaker or fuse. Reset a tripped breaker once. If it trips immediately again, leave it off and stop troubleshooting.
- Let the motor cool, then check the reset button. After power is disconnected and the unit has cooled, look for a small reset button on the bottom or lower rear of the disposer. On many models it is red. Press it firmly once.
- Restore power and test briefly. Run cold water, turn the disposal on for only a moment, and listen. If it remains silent, disconnect power again.
The reset button is overload protection, not a universal repair. A jam, prolonged operation, motor fault, or electrical problem can cause it to trip. If the button will not stay in, pops again, or the breaker trips as soon as the disposal starts, do not keep resetting it.
If the disposal hums but does not grind
A hum generally means that the motor is receiving power but the flywheel or grinding mechanism cannot rotate freely. Common obstructions include a utensil, bone, fruit pit, glass fragment, or compacted food.
Disconnect the power completely before inspecting or clearing the jam.
- Shine a flashlight through the sink opening. Do not reach into the chamber.
- If you can see an object, remove it with long-handled tongs or pliers.
- Find the wrench socket on the bottom of the disposal. Insert the supplied disposer wrench or the model-specified Allen wrench and move the flywheel back and forth. The purpose is to loosen the obstruction gradually, not to force the tool.
- Remove the wrench and any debris. Make sure the mechanism can move freely.
- Press the reset button if your model has one, restore power, turn on cold water, and test the disposal briefly.
A garbage disposal wrench can be useful for this specific job, but it is not a substitute for shutting off and disconnecting power. Fit is model-dependent: some InSinkErator instructions identify a standard 1/4-inch Allen wrench as an alternative, while other disposers require a different size. Confirm the size for your model before buying or using one.
If the disposal hums again, the reset button trips again, or the flywheel will not move with the correct tool, disconnect power and stop. Repeatedly allowing a stalled motor to hum can worsen the failure.
If it turns on but does not grind effectively
When the motor runs but food is not being broken up, the impellers may be obstructed, the chamber may contain small hard debris, or the unit may have an internal mechanical problem.

- Disposer drain outlet elbow kit includes the elbow, flange, rubber gasket, and two screws
- Made of durable PVC plastic
- Turn the switch off and disconnect power.
- Inspect the chamber with a flashlight.
- Remove visible objects with tongs or pliers—never with your hand.
- Use only the model-appropriate jam-clearing procedure if the impellers or flywheel are restricted.
- Restore power and test with cold water only after the mechanism is free.
The absence of a large object does not prove that the disposal is clear. A small piece of metal, glass, bone, or other hard material can still interfere with movement. If the impellers remain stuck or the disposal still performs poorly after safe clearing, arrange service.
Do not pour grease, oil, or improvised lubricant into the unit. The motor is permanently lubricated, and adding oil can create another problem rather than fixing the grinding mechanism.
If the disposal rattles, clanks, or vibrates
A metallic rattle usually indicates a foreign object in the grinding chamber.
- Turn the switch off and disconnect power.
- Look through the opening with a flashlight.
- Remove anything visible using long-handled tongs or pliers.
- If necessary, use the correct disposer wrench to move the mechanism back and forth so you can locate or free the obstruction.
A loud vibration without an obvious object can indicate a loose mounting assembly, discharge connection, or drainpipe connection. Do not operate a disposal that is shaking severely. If tightening an accessible plumbing connection does not resolve the problem—or if the noise began after an impact or installation—have the unit inspected.

For a leak
Keep the disposal switched off and disconnect power before looking underneath the sink. A leak may come from a plumbing connection, mounting assembly, seal, disposal body, or the area around the wiring. Do not operate the unit if water is reaching its electrical connection. A leak from the disposal body or mounting area generally requires repair or replacement rather than a reset.
For a slow or non-draining sink
The disposal may be working while the downstream drain is clogged. Do not assume that a sink that will not drain has a failed motor. Keep the disposal off until standing water and the cause of the blockage can be addressed safely. If water is backing up elsewhere, the clog may be farther down the drain system and may require a qualified plumber.
If you must remove standing water to inspect safely, use a bucket or container. Do not put your hand into the disposal opening to search through the water.

- Turn the wall switch off.
- Unplug the unit, or switch off its circuit breaker if it is hardwired.
- Allow the motor to cool.
- Inspect for and clear a jam using a flashlight, tongs or pliers, and the correct disposer wrench. Keep your hands out of the chamber.
- Press the disposal’s overload reset button once. It is commonly located on the bottom or lower rear of the unit, but the exact location varies by model.
- Restore power, run cold water, and test the unit briefly.
If the button will not stay depressed, the disposal remains silent, or the button trips repeatedly, check the breaker once and then escalate to service. Repeated resets without correcting the underlying cause can damage the motor or indicate an unsafe electrical condition.

- the disposal may be affected by a recall.
Do not keep running a humming, leaking, smoking, or severely vibrating disposal while waiting for service.
Should you replace the garbage disposal?
Replacement should not be the first step for a simple jam or tripped overload protector. First rule out power loss, an obstruction, a reset condition, and a visible plumbing leak.
Replacement becomes more reasonable when the disposal has a failed motor, a damaged body or mounting assembly, recurring internal faults, or a leak that cannot be repaired economically. Before buying a replacement, record the brand, model, and serial number and compare the installation requirements, electrical connection, sink-flange size, horsepower, discharge connection, and available clearance.
If you suspect a manufacturing defect, identify the model and serial range and check current manufacturer notices and Consumer Product Safety Commission recall information before continued use. A recall may apply only to particular models or serial ranges, so a general brand name is not enough.
How to prevent future disposal problems
- Run a moderate flow of cold water while grinding and continue the water briefly after switching the disposal off.
- Feed scraps gradually instead of overloading the chamber.
- Keep grease and fat out of both the disposal and the drain.
- Keep hard foreign objects out of the chamber.
- Be cautious with fibrous or starchy scraps that can contribute to jams or clogs. Exact restrictions vary by model, so follow the owner’s manual.
- Do not pour grease, oil, or chemical drain products into the disposal as a routine fix.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my garbage disposal not working after I press the reset button?
Turn the switch off, unplug the disposal or turn off its breaker, allow the motor to cool, and clear any jam before pressing the reset button. The button is commonly on the bottom or lower rear of the unit. If it will not stay in or trips again, stop and arrange service.

What should I do if my garbage disposal hums but does not spin?
A hum usually means the motor has power but the grinding mechanism is jammed. Disconnect power, inspect with a flashlight, remove visible objects with tongs or pliers, and use the correct disposer wrench to loosen the flywheel. Never put your hand into the disposal.
Can I reach into a garbage disposal to remove an object?
No. A hand can be injured by sharp components or an unexpected start. Disconnect power first and use long-handled tongs or pliers to remove visible objects.
Why does my sink drain slowly even though the garbage disposal runs?
Not necessarily. A disposal can run while a downstream drain is clogged. Keep the disposal off, address the standing water safely, and call a plumber if the blockage is beyond the accessible plumbing or water backs up elsewhere.
The Bottom Line
For a silent disposal, check power, allow the motor to cool, and use the reset button only after confirming there is no jam. For a humming or noisy disposal, disconnect power and clear visible obstructions with tools—never your hands. Repeated resets, electrical trouble, smoke, burning odors, severe vibration, an unmovable flywheel, or leaks near wiring are reasons to stop and call a qualified professional.
