Online maps can help you orient yourself, but they do not establish the exact boundary on the ground. If a corner is missing or construction, permitting, or a dispute depends on the line, contact a locally licensed professional land surveyor.
1. Find your parcel in county records
Search your county assessor’s parcel lookup or GIS map by street address. Note the parcel number and, if shown, the subdivision and lot information. County portals and office names vary, but the parcel number is useful when requesting records.
Use the map to understand the parcel’s general location and shape—not to mark an exact line on the ground. Clark County describes cadastral mapping as a records-based mapping function (Cadastral Mapping Overview), while Kitsap County cautions against relying on GIS for exact property boundaries (Property Lines).
2. Get the deed, plat, or prior survey
Look for recorded documents that describe the parcel: a deed, subdivision plat, parcel map, or prior boundary survey. The county map viewer may link directly to records; otherwise, contact the county recorder, auditor, clerk, or land-records office. Have the parcel number and any known recording, deed-book, or plat-book reference ready.

Processes differ by county. DeKalb County, Georgia, says its GIS team does not provide document copies and directs people seeking deed or plat copies to the Clerk of Superior Court when book and page details are known (Property Mapping & Land Records). Kitsap County also lists parcel and recording references as useful when searching for documents (Property Lines).
3. Read the legal description and corner notes
A deed may describe a boundary with bearings and distances, or identify a lot by reference to a recorded subdivision or parcel map. The plat or survey may show corner locations and describe monuments such as iron pins or pipes. Marin County explains that deed descriptions can use bearings and distances or refer to recorded subdivision or parcel maps (Property boundary line disputes).

Read the description and monument notes together. A fence, wall, landscaping edge, or visible stake may not coincide with the legal boundary. A recorded survey may help identify a corner, but interpreting conflicting or incomplete evidence can require professional judgment.
4. Treat visible markers and detector searches cautiously
If the survey or plat identifies a buried metal monument, a handheld metal detector may help search for a possible pin. It cannot verify that a detected object is the correct monument or establish the boundary. Surveyors.io describes detector use as a locating method (How to Locate Property Lines with Oklahoma Land Surveying); use it only as a search aid and compare any find with the recorded documents.

Do not move, replace, or rely on an uncertain marker to guide construction. If the corner cannot be confidently identified, ask a surveyor to locate it.

For rough planning or understanding the parcel’s general shape, county maps and recorded documents may be enough. A survey is the appropriate next step when the exact on-site line matters. Kitsap County Assessor’s Office states: “On site property surveys are the only way to identify actual property lines and corners.”

Contact a locally licensed professional land surveyor if a corner is missing, records conflict, a fence or building is close to the apparent line, or reliable setbacks are needed. Ask what scope is appropriate: some projects may require a full or partial boundary survey. San Mateo County notes that certain permit applications call for one (How Do I Find My Property Lines?). Requirements vary by jurisdiction.
For a legal boundary question or neighbor disagreement, avoid treating a consumer map or unverified marker as a determination. Marin County describes boundary disagreements as private civil matters and recommends consulting a licensed surveyor or civil engineer for legal boundary questions (Property boundary line disputes).
