There is no verified ranking of the “most trusted” Columbus roofers in the available listings. The safest way to choose a roofer for repair or replacement is to check the contractor’s current City of Columbus credential and approved scope, confirm insurance and references, compare at least three written estimates, and sign a contract that spells out permits, inspections, materials, payment, and warranty terms.
How to vet a Columbus roofer
Start with the property’s jurisdiction and the specific work you need. Ohio does not license roofers at the state level: the Ohio Attorney General’s June 2025 Consumer Advocate newsletter states, “Although a roofing contractor needs to be registered with the Ohio Secretary of State’s Office, Ohio does not license roofers.” Municipal requirements can still apply. Columbus says contractors doing covered work in the city need the appropriate city license or registration before applying for permits or starting work.

The city lists residential roofing as work that may fall within a home-improvement limited contractor scope. That does not establish that any particular roofer is currently authorized. Check the contractor’s status and approved scope using the city contractor license information or confirm it with Building and Zoning Services. Requirements may differ if the property is outside Columbus city limits.
Check reputation and qualifications directly
- Ask for recent references for comparable repair or replacement projects, then contact them.
- Request proof of insurance and confirm the coverage is current.
- Check complaint records and ask the contractor how unresolved concerns were handled.
- Ask how the roofer diagnosed the problem and why repair or replacement is the recommended option.
Does Columbus require a permit to replace a roof?
Yes. The City of Columbus says roof replacement requires a Roof, Siding, Windows, Doors permit. Structural changes, including repairs to trusses or rafters, require an alteration permit. Ask the roofer which permits apply to your property, who will obtain them, and how inspections will be arranged. Put those responsibilities in the contract rather than relying on a verbal assurance. See the city’s permits and inspections guidance.
#1 Best Overall

- 18 Inch Tapered Profile: Each cedar shingle measures about 18 x 5.8 inches, with a 0.6 inch butt end tapering to about 0.1 inch; The rectangular profile supports layered installation and consistent courses across roofs, siding and decorative surfaces

- Made for Layered Installation: The tapered wooden roof tiles overlap to form an orderly shingle layout and can be trimmed to suit edges, corners and custom sections; Plan the underlayment, spacing, fasteners and local code requirements before installation
- Small Repair and Sample Uses: Use this cedar shake siding piece for roof or wall repairs, color and grain matching, cabin accents, miniature structures, decorative wells or craft projects; Suitable for contractors, renovators and experienced DIY builders
Compare written estimates on scope, not just price
The Ohio Attorney General recommends obtaining at least three written estimates. Make sure each covers the same proposed work so you can compare meaningfully. An estimate should explain the diagnosis, materials, labor, removal and disposal, anticipated schedule, and how the contractor will handle hidden damage. Review allowances, exclusions, change-order rules, payment timing, and warranty coverage; ask for unclear items to be clarified in writing. The Attorney General’s home improvement guidance also recommends checking credentials, references, local permit requirements, and complaint records.
Put the work, payment, and warranty terms in the contract
Before work begins, sign a written contract that describes the complete job, materials, timeframe, total cost, and payment terms. It should require written approval for changes and identify who obtains permits and arranges inspections. Ask for the roofing-material manufacturer’s warranty in writing and read it separately from any workmanship promise made by the contractor; they are different commitments, and their coverage and conditions can differ.
