Start with the former supplier’s closure or ownership-change notice, website, or phone line. It may identify a successor, another branch, or instructions for existing orders and accounts. If it does not, use a building-material dealer association directory that covers your region to find possible replacements, then call each yard to confirm it is operating and can serve your project. A directory listing is a lead—not proof of current ownership, stock, hours, or transferred orders.
Start with the supplier you already know
Before searching for a replacement, look for information from the business that closed or changed ownership. Check its posted notice, website, voicemail, email, or any message sent to customers. The former supplier may name a successor, direct customers to a relocated branch, or give a contact for questions about open orders and accounts. Because the supplier and location are not specified here, there is no confirmed successor to point you to; this is the best first check for your particular case.

Write down the exact business name and any successor name or contact information in the notice. If the information is unclear, contact the listed party and ask whether it is taking over the yard, only certain operations, or particular customer accounts. Do not assume that a change in ownership automatically transferred your quote, order, deposit, account balance, or payment terms.
Keep the notice and any order paperwork together while you make inquiries. Note the contact name, the date you spoke, and what the business said about the specific transaction. This gives you a clear record to refer to if you need to call again or speak with another person. A general statement that the business changed hands is not the same as confirmation that your particular order or account moved with it.

If the former supplier has shut its phone line or website, use any customer message, posted notice, or other contact it left to identify the right party. Do not treat an unrelated business with a similar name as the successor without confirmation. If there is no named successor or contact, move on to finding candidates in your region; the absence of a notice does not establish that a nearby dealer has assumed the old supplier’s obligations.
Find directories that cover your region
Trade associations can help you make a shortlist of nearby dealers, but their coverage and listing criteria differ. Choose a directory based on where you live, not simply the first result in a web search. These are regional starting points, not a single comprehensive nationwide locator:
| Directory or association | Geographic scope and what it offers | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| BLD Connection Dealer Reference Manual | Described as a directory and buyer’s guide for building-material suppliers in the Midwest. Listing and purchase conditions are tied to supplier or associate membership. | Use it to identify possible Midwest suppliers. Check the current access and listing conditions and verify each business directly. |
| LBMAO directory app | The Lumber and Building Materials Association of Ontario describes an app listing Ontario lumber, building-material, and hardware retailers by region, with a map. Its supplier section also covers manufacturers, distributors, buying groups, wholesalers, and service firms. | For an Ontario search, use the regional listings and map to find candidates, then confirm that a retailer serves your area and sells the category you need. |
| CSA member directory | The Composite Panel Association (CSA) directory offers state and supplier-business-type filters, with list, category, and map views. CSA identifies its service area as Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Oklahoma. | Use the state and business-type filters within that stated footprint. Check whether a result is a local retail yard or another kind of supplier before relying on it. |
| NRLA association list | The Northeastern Retail Lumber Association lists state and local dealer associations, including groups in New York and New England. | Use it to find an association serving your area and ask whether it has a dealer directory. The association list is not a confirmed directory of every local yard. |
The National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association (NLBMDA) describes its members as companies operating lumber yards and component plants that serve builders, contractors, and consumers. Its press-room page provides industry context, but it is not established here as a local consumer locator. If you are outside the regions covered above, look for your state or local lumber and building-material dealer association rather than treating one of these regional directories as nationwide.

Pay attention to what kind of listing you are looking at. Some association resources focus on retailers, while others include suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers, buying groups, service firms, or component plants. A result may be relevant to the building-material trade but not be a nearby retail yard where you can place your order. Check the business type and call to establish whether it sells directly to customers like you.
Access can also differ. BLD Connection describes its manual as tied to supplier or associate membership and notes listing and purchase conditions. If a directory is not freely or fully available to you, check what the association provides and whether it can direct you to an appropriate local resource. Do not assume that an association’s member list includes every dealer in the area or that a listing guarantees a particular level of service.
Turn directory results into a useful shortlist
Use a map or category filter to generate candidates, not to decide that a yard is suitable. A listing may not establish that a business is currently open, has the product on hand, accepts consumer orders, or delivers to your address. Confirm those details before driving over or planning a purchase.

Make a short list rather than stopping at the first map result. Include only businesses that appear to be in a workable geographic area and whose listed business type seems relevant. Then use the same questions for each candidate so that you can compare answers rather than relying on different assumptions for different yards. A directory’s location pin is a starting point for checking distance, not proof that it covers your project site.
- Check the location. Compare the yard’s current address with your project location and ask whether it serves that area. A nearby map pin does not establish the delivery boundary.
- Match the product category. Ask whether the yard handles the material you need, such as framing lumber, sheet goods, trim, or a specialty product. A general building-material listing does not confirm a particular product or grade is available.
- Compare the way you can get the order. Ask about pickup or delivery, any minimum order, and the expected lead time. Do not infer these terms from the listing.
- Check account and order continuity separately. If the former supplier named a successor, ask that business directly whether it recognizes your specific quote, open order, deposit, account, or agreed terms.
- Confirm current business details. Ask for the correct business name, address, phone or email contact, and opening hours before making plans.
For the product question, describe the category and the specifications you already know from your project or paperwork. Do not take a broad “we carry lumber” answer as confirmation that the exact material you need is available. Ask whether it is in stock now or would need to be ordered, and get an expected lead time if the yard needs to source it. The directory cannot answer that inventory question for you.
For timing, distinguish a business’s opening hours from the timing of your material order. A yard may be open while the requested product is not immediately available. Confirm both the hours for a visit and the expected timing for pickup or delivery of the specific order. If you are planning around an existing quote or delivery date, ask the successor whether that date remains valid rather than assuming it does.
Call before you travel or place an order
A brief call can resolve the questions a directory cannot. Have your project location and a concise description of the materials ready. If you have an old quote or order confirmation, keep it available, but do not assume the new owner has access to it.
When you call, first establish who you have reached: confirm the current business name, address, and whether the person is speaking for the successor or a different nearby supplier. Then work through the product and service questions. This keeps a search for a replacement yard separate from the more specific question of whether an old transaction transferred.

Questions for any prospective yard
- Are you currently operating at this address, and what is the correct business name?
- Do you sell the product category and specifications I need?
- Is the material available now, or would it need to be ordered? If ordered, what lead time should I expect?
- Do you offer pickup, delivery, or both? Do you serve my project location, and is there a minimum order?
- What are your current opening hours and pickup procedures?
If the answer is that the material must be ordered, ask what timing to plan around before committing to a schedule. If delivery is important, state the project location and ask directly whether it falls within the yard’s service area. If pickup is your plan, confirm the current procedure and hours, rather than relying on an old listing or assuming the new business operates like the former supplier.

Additional questions if your former supplier changed ownership
- Did your business take over the former supplier, a branch, or particular customer accounts?
- Can you confirm whether my specific quote, order, deposit, or account transferred?
- Are the quoted price, payment terms, and expected delivery date still valid?
- If you cannot confirm a transfer, who should I contact about the outstanding order or payment?
Ask for any important confirmation in writing, especially when it concerns an existing order, payment, or quote. Keep the response with the original paperwork. If the new business cannot confirm a transfer, treat the old transaction as unresolved and contact the former supplier’s listed contact for instructions rather than placing a duplicate order on the assumption that the original was canceled.
Be precise about what you need confirmed. A successor may have taken over a location or some operations without taking over every order or account. Ask about your own order number, quote, deposit, or account and the terms attached to it. If the person you reach cannot answer, ask for the appropriate contact rather than interpreting silence or a general change-of-ownership notice as approval.
Choose based on fit, not just distance
Once you have two or more viable candidates, compare the same practical details for each. The best fit depends on the project: a closer yard may not serve your location, carry the needed category, or offer a workable pickup or delivery arrangement. The following comparison points are questions to ask; they are not verified offers from any particular yard.
| What to compare | What to confirm | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Geographic fit | Current address, whether the yard serves your project location, and its delivery radius or area | A listing or map location does not establish service to your site. |
| Product fit | Whether it sells the needed category and whether the required material is available or must be ordered | A directory category does not confirm a specific product is in stock. |
| Pickup or delivery | Available method, delivery coverage, minimum order, pickup procedure, and expected lead time | These details affect whether the yard can meet your schedule and logistics. |
| Existing transaction | Whether a successor honors your individual quote, order, deposit, account, or terms | Ownership change alone does not establish that prior arrangements transferred. |
| Business identity and contact | Current business name, address, hours, and a contact who can answer order questions | Directory information can change; verify before traveling or paying. |
Use this comparison to rule out mismatches early. For example, a candidate might be close but outside the area it serves, or might carry the general category but not have your required material available when you need it. Another yard might be farther away but offer a workable pickup or delivery plan. These are questions to resolve with each business, not claims that any particular yard offers one option or another.
Keep the old supplier’s transaction separate from the replacement search. If a candidate is a suitable new source, that does not answer whether your previous deposit, quote, account balance, or order remains valid. Get confirmation from the business responsible for that transaction before treating it as transferred, canceled, or replaced. Likewise, do not infer that a candidate will match the old supplier’s price or terms; ask what applies to the order you are considering.
There is no published statistic here for the likelihood of finding a replacement or for how often customer accounts move during a change in ownership. Your decision should therefore be based on direct answers about your project and transaction, not on an assumed industry-wide practice.

If the association search comes up short
Association directories are geographically limited and do not constitute a universal list of local yards. If you find few relevant results, widen the search in a controlled way:
- Check whether your state or local area has a dealer association, using NRLA’s association list as a starting point if you are in the Northeast.
- Search for nearby lumberyards and building-material dealers, including results just outside your town or county if they may serve your project location.
- Ask local builders or remodelers which yards serve the area and whether they can recommend a contact. Treat a referral as a lead, not confirmation of current stock or terms.
- Verify every candidate directly using the call questions above. If a listing cannot be confirmed with the business, do not rely on it for an order or trip.
If the first directory does not produce a usable result, do not assume that no local option exists. The directories described here cover particular regions or association networks, and some focus on types of suppliers that may not be retail yards. Try the relevant state or local association, broaden the geographic search to businesses that may serve your project, and ask local builders or remodelers for leads. Then apply the same verification steps to every name, whether it came from an association, a map, or a referral.
There is no single comprehensive nationwide consumer directory established here. That means a reader’s location matters: the most useful next step outside the named regional resources is to identify the association that covers that state or locality, if one exists, and ask what dealer-finding help it provides. Association listings are useful for discovery, but they are not a substitute for checking current details with the yard.
What directories can—and cannot—tell you
Regional dealer directories can help you discover businesses by geography or supplier type. Their existence does not establish that a particular listing is current, that the company remains under the same ownership, or that it sells or has available the material your project needs. Nor does a directory establish that a successor assumed another business’s customer obligations.
The sources described here provide regional examples rather than a comprehensive national consumer finder. They also do not establish a published success rate for finding a replacement yard after a closure, or a statistic about how often orders or accounts transfer in an ownership change. For a specific supplier or transaction, confirmation must come from the business involved.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse the directory for what it can do well: point you toward possible suppliers and, in some cases, help sort them by region or business type. Use the phone call for what only the business can establish: whether it is operating at the listed address, who owns or operates it now, what it currently sells, whether it can serve your location, and what it will honor for your order. Keeping those two roles clear prevents a search result from becoming an unsupported assumption.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find out who took over my lumberyard?
Start with the former supplier’s closure or ownership-change notice, website, voicemail, email, or customer message. Look for a named successor, relocated branch, or contact for orders and accounts. If the notice is unclear, contact the listed party and ask which operations or customer accounts it took over. If no successor is identified, do not assume a nearby yard is responsible for the old supplier’s transactions.
Does a directory listing mean a lumberyard is open and has what I need?
No. Association directories are useful for finding candidates, but inclusion does not prove current operating status, ownership, hours, inventory, or service to your address. Call the business to verify its current name and location, product category and availability, delivery or pickup options, and lead time.
Will my old quote, order, deposit, or account transfer when a supplier changes ownership?
A change in ownership does not by itself establish that any of those items transferred. Ask the successor directly about your specific quote, order, deposit, account, payment terms, and expected delivery date. Request important confirmation in writing and keep it with your original paperwork.

Confirm that it is operating at the current address, sells the product category and specifications you need, and either has the material available or can give an expected lead time. Ask whether it serves your project location, offers pickup or delivery, has a minimum order, and what its current hours and pickup procedures are.
What if association directories do not show a nearby yard?
Check for a state or local dealer association, search nearby towns or counties for lumberyards and building-material dealers, and ask local builders or remodelers for leads. Treat each result as a candidate, not a verified recommendation, and call to confirm current business details and fit.
The Bottom Line
Check the former supplier’s own notice first for a successor or instructions about orders and accounts. Then use a regional dealer-association directory to build a shortlist, and call each candidate to verify current operation, product availability, service area, pickup or delivery, and lead time. Confirm any old quote, order, deposit, or account directly with the business responsible for it: a directory listing or ownership change alone does not settle those questions.
