Evaluate data center steel framing as a complete floor system, not by nominal span or an average load in pounds per square foot. Start with current and future rack loads, concentrated support reactions, rolling equipment routes, vibration and deflection criteria, service needs, and the load path to the foundations. Then compare beam-and-girder, composite deck-and-beam, and open-web joist schemes using the same assumptions. No framing type or universal rack load can be selected without the project’s geometry, equipment schedule, jurisdiction, and engineering analysis.

Why long span is only one part of the decision

A longer clear span can reduce the number of columns in a data hall, but it does not by itself make a floor suitable for data center use. The framing still has to carry the actual distribution of equipment and building loads, control deflection and vibration, accommodate services, and transfer reactions through the columns or walls into foundations or an existing structure. A scheme that looks efficient on a span diagram may require deeper members, more complex connections, or additional support elsewhere.

Data center floor loading is especially sensitive to how equipment is supported and moved. Racks occupy defined footprints and can apply substantial reactions at a small number of support points. Equipment may be replaced with heavier configurations, relocated along particular routes, or supplemented by suspended mechanical and electrical systems. An average area load alone can conceal these local effects.

For that reason, the useful comparison is between complete, consistently modeled floor schemes. It should include the structural framing, deck and slab where applicable, raised-access-floor assembly, openings, connections, diaphragm, columns, lateral system, and foundation reactions—not just the primary steel members.

Build the design basis before choosing a framing grid

Ask the owner, equipment suppliers, and design team to document what the floor must support during initial operation and the anticipated maximum future configuration. ASHRAE describes two ways to characterize maximum datacom load: watts per unit floor area and kilowatts per rack or cabinet. Area-based planning can be useful while rack quantities and contents remain uncertain; rack-level information is more granular once those details are available. These planning measures are inputs to the engineer’s load model, not structural design loads by themselves.

Capture minimum and changing loads as well as maximum loads. A planned maximum is important for future capacity, but the floor may experience different layouts and operating conditions over its life. The engineer needs the credible combinations and locations, not an assumption that the maximum is spread uniformly over every part of the hall. Avoid substituting an isolated rack rating, a planning metric, or a generic pounds-per-square-foot figure for the project load model.

Collect rack, equipment, and movement information

  • Installed rack and equipment weights, plus the maximum anticipated future weights.
  • Rack footprints, support count and locations, and reactions at each support. Identify leveling feet, casters, or other support conditions where relevant.
  • Equipment layout and phasing, including the expected future high-density configuration.
  • Rack anchorage requirements and any unusual equipment support or restraint conditions.
  • Routes used to deliver, relocate, or replace heavy equipment; document wheel characteristics and movement conditions needed to assess rolling loads.
  • Other concentrated loads, including equipment that may be placed temporarily during installation or maintenance.

Ask equipment suppliers for the support arrangement and reactions rather than relying only on total equipment weight. A total weight distributed over a footprint can mask the effects of a few leveling feet or casters. Likewise, a rack that remains stationary in operation creates a different load case from heavy equipment being rolled along a delivery or relocation route. The engineer should assess both the static condition and the relevant movement cases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Movement information should be specific enough to establish where the rolling load travels and what floor components it crosses. This matters for the access-floor assembly and the structure below it. Repeated rolling loads and localized wheel loads may govern a different part of the system than the rack’s installed static weight. Do not assume that a floor tile or pedestal rating answers the structural question for the slab, deck, beams, or joists beneath.

Include the complete floor build-up and suspended services

Record the proposed structural slab or deck, any concrete topping, and the access-floor tile, pedestal, or stringer system. The access floor and the structure beneath it are separate parts of the load path: a raised-floor rating does not establish the capacity of the slab, beams, or joists below. Confirm that concentrated loads and repeated rolling loads are compatible with both the access-floor assembly and the supporting structure.

List chilled-water piping, cable trays, busways, and other suspended mechanical or electrical services. Include their support locations and loads in the framing coordination so they are not treated as an afterthought. Also establish whether the data hall is on grade, elevated, above a basement, or over another occupied use; that location changes the framing and load-transfer context.

Where service routes or equipment layouts are still developing, record the assumptions and identify what must be confirmed later. Early plans can show likely corridors and support zones, but final openings and hung loads need to be coordinated with the selected structural arrangement. A preliminary service overlay is a coordination aid, not a substitute for checking actual member capacity and load transfer.

Set performance targets and project conditions

Before screening systems, agree on the operating conditions and acceptance criteria that matter to the owner and equipment suppliers. These should cover deflection and vibration, including sensitive areas and equipment operation where applicable. AISC guidance calls for floor-system vibration checks; strength compliance alone does not establish that a floor’s response is acceptable to the project.

Identify the applicable code edition, local amendments, risk and hazard criteria, and project-specific serviceability requirements. For U.S. projects, ASCE identifies ASCE/SEI 7-22 as its current general loading standard, but the jurisdiction determines which edition and amendments govern. AISC 360 provides generally applicable requirements for steel building design and includes both LRFD and ASD methods. The engineer should confirm the editions and standards required for the actual project.

Do not turn a generic vibration reference into a pass/fail criterion for data-center equipment. AISC Design Guide 11 is relevant to floor vibration due to human activity, but equipment acceptance needs project-specific input from the owner and suppliers. Agree what operating situations matter, which areas are sensitive, and what acceptance criteria will be used before comparing candidate systems; otherwise, options may be judged against inconsistent expectations.

Compare candidate steel framing systems

Screen more than one plausible scheme against the same bay geometry, load cases, performance criteria, floor-depth constraints, and service layout. The following are alternatives to evaluate, not a universal ranking. A useful early study identifies where each scheme may suit the project and what must be checked before advancing it; it does not declare a winner from nominal span alone.

Beam-and-girder framing with deck and slab

Steel beams and girders can support a concrete-topped steel deck. The design may use composite action between the steel beams and concrete slab, or a non-composite approach, depending on the design and detailing. AISC’s guide describes composite beams as generally lighter and shallower than non-composite framing. That is a comparative tendency, not a guarantee that composite construction will be lighter or shallower for every data hall.

Evaluate beam and girder depth together with deck and slab thickness, fire-rating needs, connection behavior, and the locations of openings. Composite action must be appropriate to the scheme and properly detailed. Check how openings and service routes affect members and the slab, and consider whether a seemingly shallow beam arrangement creates coordination constraints elsewhere in the floor build-up.

Compare the beam-and-girder alternatives on the same load schedule and support geometry. A composite option and a non-composite option should each be checked for serviceability and vibration as well as strength; a reduction in member weight or depth does not by itself establish acceptable performance. Also trace the resulting reactions into girders and columns so that a floor-level benefit is not evaluated in isolation.

Open-web steel joists

Open webs can provide routes for plumbing, electrical, and HVAC services through the framing zone. AISC educational material discusses K, LH, DLH, and CJ joist series, heavier floor loads, vibration prediction, and comparison of joist type, spacing, depth, and span using the Steel Joist Institute’s Floor Bay Tool. Those resources can support early comparison and coordination, but a tool output or preliminary layout is not the final design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For each joist scheme, coordinate actual loading, web openings, seats, bridging, deck support, vibration, and connections with the joist manufacturer and structural engineer. Service penetrations that appear convenient in a schematic may conflict with webs, bridging, or required structural details. Use manufacturer layouts and BIM as coordination aids, then confirm that the design and final load information match the project.

When comparing joist options, keep joist type, spacing, depth, and span visible in the alternatives rather than treating “open web” as one fixed solution. Review whether proposed service paths can pass through the actual web configuration and whether the support and bridging arrangements suit the floor design. The Floor Bay Tool and manufacturer BIM can help organize the comparison, but final capacities and details still need confirmation by the manufacturer and engineer.

Precast plank on steel girders as an adjacent option

Precast plank supported by steel girders can be included when it fits the project’s floor construction and coordination needs. AISC’s 2023 Architects’ Guide reports possible plank spans of 10 to 40 feet between steel girders, depending on floor load and plank thickness; long spans may call for deeper girders. This range describes a reported possibility for precast planks, not a universal steel-framing span, data-center capacity, or assurance that a specific project layout is feasible.

Use one comparison basis for every scheme

Ask the design team to evaluate each candidate with the same rack schedules, concentrated reactions, rolling cases, future configuration, suspended services, and performance criteria. A consistent comparison makes trade-offs visible; changing assumptions between schemes can make a nominally attractive option appear better for reasons unrelated to the framing itself.

Evaluation area Questions for each candidate scheme
Strength and stability Can members, connections, diaphragm, and lateral load path resist the applicable area loads, point loads, movement cases, future loads, and suspended services?
Vibration and deflection Does the complete floor system meet the owner’s and equipment suppliers’ project-specific criteria under the operating conditions that matter?
Structural depth What is the combined depth of framing and floor construction, including deck or slab and raised floor, and how does it affect available space?
Service coordination Can cooling, power, cabling, and other services be routed and supported while maintaining required structural members and coordinated openings?
Columns and clear space Where are columns and supports, and how do they affect rack aisles, clear spans, equipment movement, expansion, and neighboring spaces?
Construction and future work What are the implications for erection sequence, fabrication, availability, fire protection, maintenance access, and later modifications?
Load transfer What reactions are delivered to columns, walls, foundations, or an existing structure, and can those elements carry the resulting loads?
Cost and schedule What are the installed cost and schedule implications when evaluated on a common scope rather than bare member prices?

Use the table as a consistent review agenda, not a scoring shortcut. If one alternative assumes a different rack arrangement, fewer service loads, or a less demanding vibration criterion, its apparent advantage is not comparable. Record unresolved inputs next to each option and ask whether they could change the result before a framing selection is made.

Judge the floor, not only the member

Member strength is only one check. The engineer must account for how rack support reactions reach the framing, how the deck or slab distributes loads, and how local forces affect supports and connections. Total and concentrated effects can differ substantially: a broad area load and a heavy rack on discrete feet are not interchangeable representations of the same condition.

Vibration and deflection also need to be assessed for the complete system. They depend on the chosen framing and floor construction, loading, support conditions, and criteria established for the project. AISC Design Guide 11 is a relevant resource for floor vibration due to human activity, but it should not be described as the sole or definitive reference for equipment vibration. The owner and equipment suppliers should help define relevant operating criteria, and the engineer should identify appropriate evaluation methods for those criteria.

Similarly, check rolling cases against the actual movement route rather than treating them as just another uniform area load. Consider the access-floor tile and pedestal or stringer system as well as the slab or structural framing. A route that crosses a localized support or a different floor condition may call for specific engineering attention. The project team should provide the wheel and movement information needed for that assessment instead of assuming a static rack check covers relocation.

Account for the real floor depth and service zone

Compare total floor build-up rather than beam depth in isolation. Deck, slab, raised floor, fire protection, and service clearances all consume space or affect the available zone. An open-web arrangement may make some routes easier, while a beam-and-girder layout may require more deliberate coordination around members. Neither characteristic decides the outcome without a coordinated service plan and structural design.

Mark openings and penetrations early. Their position and size can affect member selection, joist webs, deck support, connection details, and diaphragm behavior. Coordination drawings should reflect the design loads and final service layout, not merely show that a route fits in an early model.

Include space for cooling, power, and cabling in the floor-depth discussion, along with the access floor and structural build-up. A framing scheme should not be judged on a steel depth that omits the slab, deck, or space needed for coordinated services. Ask the design team to compare the total section and identify conflicts that could require later rerouting or structural revisions.

Trace reactions beyond the data hall

A framing scheme that reduces floor member weight or improves clear space can still change demands on girders, columns, walls, foundations, or the existing building. Compare those reactions as part of the option study. Where the floor is elevated or sits over another use, the support system and load path below the hall are part of the same decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Include stability and lateral-load considerations along with gravity framing. The diaphragm, connections, and lateral load path must work as a system, and the chosen arrangement must be compatible with columns and supporting elements. The comparison should identify whether a benefit within the floor creates added work or demand at its supports.

For an existing building or a hall above a basement or occupied space, do not stop the review at the new floor framing. Record where the reactions go and have the engineer assess the receiving structure and foundations as applicable. The same principle applies to a new building: member options are not directly comparable on cost or constructability if their downstream support implications are omitted.

Compare cost and delivery on a common scope

There is no general cost ranking for these systems in the available project information. Compare installed cost and schedule using a shared scope that includes the framing and its related floor construction, connections, fire protection, coordination, and support implications. Bare member prices can hide work shifted to the slab, services, columns, foundations, or erection sequence.

Include fabrication and availability, erection sequence, maintenance access, and the possibility of future modifications in the decision record. A system that supports a long clear span may still have trade-offs in depth, service coordination, or support reactions. Treat these as project-specific comparisons rather than assuming that one framing family is always faster or less expensive.

Turn the comparison into an engineering handoff

A useful decision record lets the owner understand why one scheme advances, what assumptions support it, and what must be resolved before design is finalized. It should not substitute a generic span chart or a single rack-load number for project calculations.

  1. Freeze the comparison inputs. Record the rack schedule, support reactions, rolling routes, future configuration, suspended services, bay geometry, and floor construction used in each option.
  2. Document the performance basis. State the governing code and adopted standards, project vibration and deflection criteria, fire-rating assumptions, and operating conditions used for evaluation.
  3. Compare complete schemes. Review strength, stability, serviceability, total floor depth, openings, service coordination, erection, future changes, and reactions to supporting construction on a common scope.
  4. Resolve coordination risks. Identify outstanding rack layouts, service penetrations, joist or beam conflicts, support locations, and questions for equipment suppliers or manufacturers.
  5. Have the engineer of record verify the load path. Confirm the final design from the floor surface and equipment supports through slab or deck, framing, connections, columns or walls, and foundations or existing structure.

Standards, manuals, and design-guide editions can change, and AISC cautions that guides referring to particular editions may need review for later revisions, industry changes, and errata. Use the standards and manuals required by the governing code and engineer, and verify current requirements for the project’s jurisdiction.

Useful references include ASHRAE Datacom Series Book 5, Structural and Vibration Guidelines for Datacom Equipment Centers; ASCE/SEI 7-22 for general structural loading where adopted; AISC 360 for steel building design; and AISC Design Guide 11 for its stated human-activity floor-vibration scope. Check the current edition, availability, local adoption, amendments, and applicability with the engineer rather than assuming any one guide sets every project criterion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a raised-floor rating confirm that the data center structure below is adequate?

No. The access-floor tiles, pedestals, and stringers are separate from the slab, deck, beams, or joists that support them. Confirm the capacity of both parts of the load path for the rack reactions and relevant rolling loads.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use one pounds-per-square-foot number for data center rack floor loads?

Not as a substitute for a project-specific load model. Area-based planning measures such as watts per floor area can help when equipment details are uncertain, while rack-level information is more granular. The engineer also needs rack support reactions, concentrated loads, future equipment, and movement cases.

Which steel framing system is best for long spans in a data center?

There is no universal winner. Compare beam-and-girder or composite deck-and-beam systems and open-web joists using the same geometry, load cases, vibration and deflection criteria, total floor depth, service needs, construction scope, and reactions to supports and foundations.

Do open-web joists automatically make service coordination easier?

They can provide routing space through the framing zone, but actual web openings, bridging, seats, support details, and structural requirements still need coordination. The Steel Joist Institute’s Floor Bay Tool and manufacturer BIM can aid comparison, but the manufacturer and engineer must confirm the final design.

What does the 10-to-40-foot precast plank span range mean?

AISC’s 2023 Architects’ Guide reports that range for precast planks between steel girders, depending on floor load and plank thickness. It is not a universal steel-framing span or a guarantee that a particular data-center floor is feasible; long spans may require deeper girders.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Choose a data center floor framing scheme only after the project team has defined current and future rack loads, support reactions, rolling routes, suspended services, and equipment-related performance criteria. Compare complete systems on the same assumptions, then have the engineer of record verify strength, vibration, deflection, coordination, and the full load path through the supporting structure and foundations.
