Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a small workshop built around plywood projects, start with a handheld circular saw for straight cuts, a drill for holes and assembly, and reliable ways to support and secure the work. Choose panels for their intended use, appearance, and exposure conditions—not just a shorthand label such as “CDX.” Add other tools only when a project calls for them, and plan for safe cutting, drilling, and dust capture from the outset.
Choose plywood for the job
Plywood selection depends on what the panel must do and where it will be used. Compare its intended application, face appearance, surface finish, performance marking, and bond classification. The APA – The Engineered Wood Association’s plywood selection guidance explains these distinctions.
Appearance and surface finish
Veneer grades describe face quality and allowable repairs: A-grade veneer offers a smoother appearance, while D-grade is utility grade. Panel grades and finishes also matter. Unsanded panels are generally suited to uses where appearance is not critical; sanded or overlaid panels provide a smoother, more uniform surface.
For a visible workbench top or shop fixture, a smoother face may be useful. A concealed panel may have different priorities. Select thickness and panel rating according to the load, support spacing, and construction. There is no universally best plywood grade for every bench. For significant loads or work subject to building-code requirements, use project-specific design information rather than a generic DIY rule.

Exposure classification and “CDX”
Bond classification indicates resistance to moisture exposure; it does not mean a panel resists decay. APA describes Exterior panels as intended to withstand repeated wetting and drying or long-term weather exposure. Exposure 1 panels are intended for moisture effects during construction or similarly limited exposure, not permanent weather exposure. Panels commonly called “CDX” are Exposure 1, not Exterior.
Choose the classification for the actual service environment and check the panel stamp or trademark. Do not rely on a retail shorthand alone.

Build a practical handheld-tool core
Handheld circular saw for straight cuts
A handheld circular saw is the core tool for straight cuts in sheet material. Before cutting, check that the saw’s capacity and blade suit the material and cut, and follow the saw maker’s instructions for blade speed and setup. OSHA identifies point-of-operation injury, kickback, and flying particles as hazards with handheld circular saws; its circular-saw guidance calls for keeping hands out of the cut line, using a suitable blade, maintaining the blade, and leaving sufficient clearance for the stock.
Drill for holes and assembly
A handheld drill covers pilot holes, hardware installation, and fixture assembly. Workholding is an essential companion: when a drill catches, stock held by hand can twist and become uncontrolled. OSHA recommends using a hold-down fixture rather than hands whenever possible. See its handheld-drill guidance.

Add tools to match actual projects
A jigsaw, driver, sander, or router can be useful for particular cuts, joinery, or finishing tasks, but none is a mandatory starter purchase for every plywood workshop. Choose additions to solve a specific need rather than building a collection before the work demands it. When comparing circular saws, consider cut capacity, compatible blades, guard and base configuration, dust-connection compatibility, and the manufacturer’s guidance; no model or brand is established here as best.
Set up safe cutting and drilling
Support the panel and keep the cut controlled
Arrange the panel so it is adequately supported, the saw can be guided, hands stay clear of the cut path, and the guard remains in use. Kickback is a recognized circular-saw hazard and OSHA notes it is more likely during ripping than crosscutting. Incorrect blade height, a poorly maintained blade, missing safeguards, and unsafe work practices can contribute. Do not defeat guards or use a setup that conflicts with the saw manual.

- Site-Pro Modular Guarding System allows for tool-free adjustments of the guarding
- 24.5 in. of rip capacity for ripping 4x8 plywood or OSB sheets
- Rack & pinion telescoping fence rails make fence adjustments fast, smooth, and accurate
- Compact size for easy transportation and storage
- Metal roll cage base for jobsite durability
Secure stock before drilling
Clamp or fixture the work whenever possible instead of holding it by hand. A suitable hold-down can help prevent a caught drill bit from spinning the work out of control. Keep the floor and work area orderly; OSHA’s woodworking hazards overview identifies risks including lacerations, amputations, severed fingers, blindness, wood dust, and finishing chemicals.

Capture dust as close as possible to where it is generated. OSHA’s wood-dust guidance recommends locating local exhaust hoods close to the emission source. That is a source-capture principle, not an endorsement or performance guarantee for a particular consumer vacuum or extractor.

A compatible shop vacuum or dust extractor can be one practical way to capture dust at a tool, but check that the hose and connection fit the tool and follow both manufacturers’ directions. The appropriate setup depends on the equipment and work; a vacuum connection alone should not be treated as proof that dust exposure is controlled.
