An infinity mirror can suggest an escape tunnel without opening a passage or taking over a room. In a shallow framed panel or tabletop object, LEDs appear to recede between facing mirrors, creating a striking optical illusion suited to a living-room feature.
How an infinity mirror creates a tunnel effect
A typical illuminated infinity mirror places LEDs between a regular rear mirror and a partially reflective front surface. Light reflects back and forth between them. At each reflection, some light passes through the front surface toward the viewer, while the remaining light reflects again.
The reflections become dimmer with each apparent step into the mirror. Simon Fraser University’s physics demonstration explains: “The LED images dim with each reflection since some light can escape from one of the mirrors.” The repeated, fading images create the impression of a deep tunnel, but the mirror remains a shallow optical device—not an actual passage.
Lighting changes the impression
The surrounding light affects how clearly the reflections stand out. MEL Science’s explanation says the tunnel can appear deeper when ambient light is dimmer; Science Buddies likewise recommends a dark room for the effect. In a living room, that makes the mirror most dramatic when its LEDs are visible against subdued surroundings.

What the living-room version can be
Think of the “escape tunnel” as a visual feature: a framed wall panel, a decorative inset, or a compact tabletop object. The available project instructions and ready-made example describe small builds or products, while a visitor-entered mirror room is a different kind of installation. The Broad, for example, describes a mirror room visitors can enter, with flashing LED lights; that scale and access should not be confused with a shallow home panel.
A wall feature can be designed to suit the available space, but the cited sources do not establish a tested room-scale home construction plan. Treat the living-room application as a design interpretation of the optical effect, not as a proven walk-in build.

Build a panel or choose a finished mirror
The practical choice is between sourcing and assembling the optical layers yourself or choosing a ready-made compact mirror. Consider the intended form, available dimensions, willingness to assemble the mirrors and LEDs, and whether cutting or electrical work is involved.

Materials and planning for a DIY feature
The essential optical components are a regular mirror at the back, a partially reflective surface at the front, and LEDs between them. Depending on the design, the front layer may be two-way mirror film or partially reflective acrylic. LED strip lights are a relevant category to consider, but the sources do not verify compatibility or quality for any particular brand or product.

- Front layer: a partially reflective mirror surface that both reflects light inward and lets some light escape toward the viewer.

Cutting brittle materials such as plexiglass calls for eye protection and adult supervision, according to Science Buddies. Its project guidance also warns that hot glue guns and soldering irons can cause burns. Follow the instructions for the specific tools and electrical components used in your build.
