For light surface frost, Samsung recommends wiping with a damp cloth and drying the area; a plastic scraper can help with heavier patches. If ice is too heavy or inaccessible to remove by hand, use the instructions for your exact model to shut down and defrost it. Samsung warns not to use a hair dryer: it can damage the refrigerator.
Why frost forms—and what to check first
Frost forms when warm, moist air enters a compartment and freezes. An open door, something blocking closure, or a poor seal can let that air in. Before removing frost, note whether it is on a compartment wall or vent, or around the ice bucket or dispenser flap; the location can help point to the air leak.
- Check that food, bins, or drawers are not keeping the door from closing completely.
- Look for gaps around the door seal. Samsung suggests placing a flashlight inside the compartment and looking for light escaping around a closed door.
- If frost is around the ice bucket, check that the bucket is fully inserted and its seal is clean and undamaged. Make sure the dispenser flap sits flush against its housing and is not obstructed.
- Check whether the doors are aligned and the refrigerator is level.

Choose the right approach for the amount of frost
Light frost on an accessible surface
Wipe the frost with a damp cloth, then dry the area with a second cloth. Drying matters: leaving moisture behind can contribute to more frost.

Heavier patches you can reach safely
Samsung says a plastic scraper may help remove heavier frost patches. Work gently. Do not use sharp metal tools, pry at panels, or force ice away from vents or other parts.
Heavy or inaccessible buildup
If frost is too heavy or hard to clear by hand, Samsung says the refrigerator needs defrosting. The support guidance does not give one timed procedure or control sequence for every Twin Cooling Plus model. Find the model number on your appliance and follow that model’s manual for shutdown, defrost, and restart instructions. For example, Samsung Canada provides support and manuals for models such as RF23R6201SG/AA and RF18HFENBSR/AC; their model-specific documents should not be treated as interchangeable instructions.

Do not use a hair dryer to speed defrosting
Samsung explicitly warns: “Do not use a hair dryer to speed defrosting. This will damage the refrigerator.” Avoid applying a heat gun or other concentrated heat as well. Use the damp-cloth or plastic-scraper methods for accessible frost, and use the exact model’s instructions when a full defrost is needed.
Prevent frost from coming back
- Close the doors promptly and make sure nothing inside obstructs a complete closure.
- Let hot food cool before placing it in the refrigerator.
- Keep two inches of space in front of the rear compartment vents, as Samsung recommends.
- Clean a dirty rubber door seal with warm, soapy water and dry it. If the seal has pulled out of its channel, Samsung says it can be pushed back into place. A torn, split, or otherwise damaged seal needs support.
- For ice-bucket frost, keep the bucket fully inserted and check that its seal and the dispenser flap are clean, undamaged, and unobstructed.
When to contact Samsung service
Contact Samsung support if a door seal is torn or split, if frost continues to return after you have checked closure and seals, or if buildup is too heavy to clear using the model’s instructions. Include your refrigerator’s exact model number when seeking help so the guidance matches your appliance and region.
