But that fit does not ground the appliance. Use the cord only if the appliance maker permits it and its ratings and indoor/outdoor marking suit the device and location. Never remove a ground pin or use an adapter to bypass grounding. If grounded equipment must be used at a two-slot wall outlet, have a qualified electrician assess the installation.
Does a two-prong plug fit a three-prong extension cord?
Many three-prong extension-cord receptacles have two slots that accept a two-prong plug. A two-prong plug may be polarized, with one blade wider than the other, so it fits only one way. Do not force a plug that does not fit; check the plug and cord instructions instead.
Fit is not the same as grounding. A two-prong plug has no grounding pin, so it does not connect the appliance to the extension cord’s grounding conductor. The third slot in the cord’s receptacle cannot create a grounding connection through a two-prong plug. CPSC distinguishes two-conductor cords without a ground from three-conductor cords with a grounding conductor in its home wiring hazards guide.
Is it safe for your appliance?
Some appliances are designed to use two conductors and do not have an equipment-grounding connection. Others are designed to require grounding; a two-prong connection is not a substitute for that required path. This general distinction cannot determine the design or condition of a particular appliance, cord, outlet, or installation.

Before using an extension cord, check the appliance maker’s directions and the cord’s markings. The cord must be suitable for the appliance’s electrical load and the conditions where it will be used. ESFI recommends choosing cords certified by an independent testing laboratory and using polarized and/or three-prong cords where appropriate. See ESFI’s extension-cord safety tips.
Check these cord details
- Current and voltage rating: The cord must meet the appliance’s requirements.
- Indoor or outdoor marking: Use a cord rated for the location and exposure; an indoor cord is not a substitute for one intended for outdoor use.
- Length and conductor size: Choose a suitable cord rather than assuming any cord will do.
- Plug fit and polarization: Do not force a plug or alter its blades.
- Condition and construction: Avoid damaged insulation, plugs, or strain relief, and look for independent laboratory certification. CPSC identifies wire size, strain relief, polarization, continuity, and, where applicable, outlet covers or outdoor jackets among cord safety characteristics in its extension-cord guidance.
Do not bypass a grounding connection
If equipment has a three-prong plug or otherwise requires grounding, keep a continuous grounding path. Do not remove the ground pin, use an adapter that interrupts grounding, or connect grounded equipment through a two-prong setup. OSHA’s workplace rule states: “Adapters which interrupt the continuity of the equipment grounding connection may not be used.” That requirement applies in its covered workplace context; it is not a complete set of residential electrical-code instructions. OSHA also describes the equipment-grounding conductor in its flexible-cord guidance.

OSHA’s construction incident guidance illustrates the hazard of an adapter whose ground wire was not grounded: a grounding path that is absent or discontinuous may fail to provide the intended protection. The example is a warning about grounding failures, not proof that every adapter or every two-prong appliance is unsafe. See OSHA’s construction electrical incident guidance.
If the wall outlet has only two slots
A three-prong extension cord does not make a two-slot wall receptacle grounded. If grounded equipment needs to operate at that outlet, do not treat an adapter as a fix. Ask a qualified electrician to assess the installation and advise on an appropriate solution. OSHA’s guidance concerns covered workplace settings, while the right answer for a home depends on the actual installation and applicable local requirements.

- INCLUDES: 6 foot extension cord in Black; ideal for extending power when needed
- DEVICE COMPATIBILITY: 13 amp/125V power; 16 AWG
- VERSATILE: Use indoors with consumer electronics, tools, media equipment, and more

Inspect cords and stop using damaged ones
Do not use an extension cord with damaged insulation, a damaged plug, or other defects that could expose someone to injury. Replace it rather than attempting a makeshift repair. OSHA requires visual inspections of workplace extension cords before use in specified circumstances and removal from service when damage could expose an employee to injury; residential readers should follow the appliance and cord makers’ instructions and applicable local requirements.
