The CDC says that in most situations, cleaning with soap and water removes most germs from surfaces; disinfection is generally needed at home only when someone is sick or at higher risk. Clean first, then disinfect when the situation and product label call for it.
What deep cleaning can—and cannot—do
Cleaning and disinfecting are separate tasks. Cleaning uses soap or detergent, water and scrubbing to remove dirt and germs. Disinfection uses a chemical product to kill germs that remain on a surface. For most routine household cleaning, disinfection is not necessary. Disinfect only when it is warranted, such as when someone in the household is sick or at increased risk. A disinfectant does not make a dirty surface clean: soil and other impurities can interfere with its action, so wash the surface first. Follow the product label for approved surfaces, application, rinsing and wet contact time. The surface must stay visibly wet for the full time stated on that label; there is no single contact time that applies to every product.
How to deep clean a bathroom
- Clear the room. Move toiletries, bath mats and other loose items out of the way, and remove visible debris so you can reach the surfaces. Open a window or run the exhaust fan if appropriate, and keep the room ventilated while using cleaning products.
- Work from cleaner, higher surfaces toward dirtier ones. Wash mirrors, counters, shelves and other surfaces with water and soap or detergent, scrubbing as needed. Follow the care directions for each fixture and finish; a product that is suitable for one material may damage another.
- Clean areas that collect residue. Wash the sink, taps, shower or tub, and other frequently touched surfaces. Rinse or wipe as directed by the cleaner and the surface manufacturer. If disinfection is warranted, first check that the disinfectant label covers that exact surface and intended use.
- Clean the toilet with a suitable product. Use a cleaner whose label specifically permits use in the toilet bowl, and follow its directions. Do not assume a general bathroom spray is safe for the bowl, seat or every finish. Some EPA-hosted bathroom cleaner labels give separate instructions for toilet-bowl use; the directions on the product you have are what matter.
- Finish with the floor. Clean the floor after the fixtures and toilet so debris and drips can be dealt with last. Use a floor-appropriate cleaner and follow the flooring manufacturer’s care instructions.
- Wash or replace cloths and finish safely. Launder reusable cloths after cleaning, or dispose of single-use materials as their instructions direct. Let surfaces dry as directed, and store chemicals out of reach of children and pets.
When and how to disinfect
If illness or another risk makes disinfection appropriate, choose an EPA-registered product whose label authorizes the intended surface and use. EPA’s selected EPA-registered disinfectants information explains that product labels specify use sites, application directions and the time surfaces must remain wet. Check the current label rather than relying on a product name, a front-label slogan or a generic contact-time estimate.

For a bathroom product, compare the label’s permitted surfaces, the disinfectant claim relevant to your need, wet contact time, application and rinse directions, and any ventilation or protective-equipment requirements. An EPA-hosted bathroom cleaner-disinfectant label example shows why directions can vary by use, including separate directions for certain surfaces. It is an example, not a universal instruction for other products.
Use bathroom cleaners and bleach safely
- Read and follow the label, including dilution, application, rinsing, protective equipment and disposal instructions.
- Never mix bleach, disinfectants or other cleaning products. Combining products can release dangerous fumes or cause other hazardous reactions.
- Ventilate during use, and keep products away from children and pets.
- Do not apply bleach by default or use a one-size-fits-all dilution recipe. CDC advises checking the bleach bottle and using bleach only for appropriate products and surfaces; its bleach safety guidance gives directions for specific circumstances.
For products chosen by ingredient criteria, EPA’s Safer Choice product search lists qualifying products, including bathroom cleaners. Safer Choice is an ingredient-criteria program; its designation does not mean a product is a disinfectant.

Prevent recurring mold by controlling moisture
For visible mold, remove it safely and address the dampness that is allowing it to return. Use an exhaust fan that vents outside, fix leaks, and improve moisture control rather than repeatedly applying chemicals without correcting the source. CDC’s mold guidance says home mold testing is not recommended; identifying a mold species is not a prerequisite for addressing visible growth and moisture.
