To deal with wood moisture, match the wood’s moisture content to the conditions where it will be used, measure it with an appropriate method, and dry and store it in ways that limit later moisture changes. Wood takes on or releases moisture as surrounding air conditions change, which can affect its dimensions and performance. There is no single target that suits every project.
Start with where the wood will be used
Wood moves toward equilibrium with the air around it. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory explains that fabricating or installing wood at a moisture content suited to its average service conditions makes significant dimensional changes less likely. A coating can slow moisture exchange, but it cannot stop it. USDA Forest Products Laboratory, Wood Handbook chapter on drying and moisture control.
- For interior work: Consider the building’s typical indoor conditions and whether the wood will be used for furniture, paneling, or trim.
- For outdoor work: Consider the local climate and the exposure the wood will experience in service.
These conditions matter more than a generic number on a lumber label: wood that is appropriately conditioned for one setting may change size after moving to another.
What moisture content should you aim for?
Iowa State University Extension and Outreach recommends 12–15% moisture content for outdoor wood and 6–8% for indoor furniture, paneling, or trim. These are practical recommendations from that source, not universal specifications; local climate, actual service conditions, species, and the project can affect the target. The extension guidance notes that kilns are typically needed to reach the lower indoor range. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, lumber guidance.

- HUMIDITY SENSOR: Our handy meter tool can quickly determine what level of remediation is needed to keep your family safe from black mold. High levels of dampness that go untreated are the leading cause of harmful fungus growth in the home.
- WATER LEAK DETECTOR: Finding the moisture content in your wood or drywall is the first step in early prevention. Continuously check and test suspicious water stains around the house so you can determine whether the area is wet or has already dried. - MOISTURE READER: The mold test features large 0.3" high digits in a backlit LCD for quick and easy detecting. Our mildew scanner includes extra 8mm stainless steel pins, a protective cap that doubles as a calibration checker, and a “9V” battery.
- MOLD TESTER: For an accurate test read, stick the stainless steel pins into the surface of what you're measuring. The gauge has a broad range of 5 - 50% for wood and 1.5 - 33% for building materials such as concrete and drywall.

| Intended use | Extension guidance | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| Outdoor wood | 12–15% moisture content | Use as a cited practical range; consider local climate and service exposure. |
| Indoor furniture, paneling, or trim | 6–8% moisture content | Use as a cited practical range; kilns are typically needed to reach this lower range. |
The extension page does not state a publication year for these figures. Treat them as guidance to inform a project target, not as a substitute for a specification or an assessment of the conditions where the wood will be installed.
How to check wood moisture
Use a handheld meter for practical checks
A handheld moisture meter is useful for deciding whether lumber is approaching a suitable condition for its intended use. Meter type matters. Resistance meters use pin electrodes, and North Carolina State University Wood Products Extension reports an average accuracy of about ±1 percentage point over the operating range it describes. That figure is not a guarantee for every meter, wood, or measurement condition. North Carolina State University Wood Products Extension, measurement methods.

- FIND HIDDEN WALL MOISTURE EARLY — Check suspicious drywall and building surfaces after a leak, water stain, or other moisture concern. Detect abnormal moisture before a small issue develops into more extensive damage and costly repairs
- CHECK BEFORE YOU REPAIR — Don't rely on a wall looking or feeling dry. Use the moisture meter to check questionable areas before painting, repairing, or covering the surface, helping you make decisions based on actual moisture readings.
- CHECK FIREWOOD BEFORE YOU BURN — Test firewood before placing it in your fireplace or wood stove. Knowing the moisture level of your firewood helps you choose wood that is ready for burning and avoid relying on appearance alone.
- PIN-TYPE TESTING FOR DIRECT MEASUREMENTS — The contact pins penetrate the material to measure moisture inside wood and building materials. This makes it useful for checking areas where surface conditions may not tell the whole story.
- ONE TOOL FOR TWO IMPORTANT HOME CHECKS — Keep it ready for two practical jobs: checking walls for hidden moisture and checking firewood before burning. A simple way to make informed decisions before a moisture problem becomes expensive or wood goes into the fireplace.
For resistance meters, readings can depend on wood temperature and, for commonly marketed U.S. meters, pin orientation relative to the grain. Use the meter according to its manufacturer’s instructions, including any corrections or settings it specifies. Treat a reading as an estimate rather than exact laboratory truth.
Oven-dry measurement is a reference method
For comparison, the N.C. State Extension description of the oven-dry method calls for drying a wood sample to a relatively constant weight in a ventilated oven at 102–105 °C. This is more involved than a handheld check and is not the same as simply reading a meter. The source does not state a publication year for its method description. Drying wood without creating defects
Drying schedules are specific to the wood and its intended use. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory handbook covers air and kiln drying and explains that schedules are tailored to wood characteristics and end use. Species, thickness, grade, and starting condition all matter; an unsuitable or overly aggressive schedule can cause drying defects. USDA Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory, 2021 Wood Handbook chapter on drying and moisture control.
- Air drying: Do not assume it will reach the target needed for interior work; the target and local conditions matter.
- Kiln drying: Use a schedule suited to the species, thickness, grade, initial moisture condition, and end use rather than a generic time or temperature.
- During kiln drying: Hardwood drying guidance commonly adjusts kiln conditions as moisture content changes. Missouri Extension emphasizes humidity control and periodic sampling for hardwood kiln drying. University of Missouri Extension, hardwood lumber drying considerations.
Without the wood’s characteristics and the kiln setup, a universal drying time or schedule cannot be specified responsibly.

Handle and store wood to limit later changes
Drying is only part of moisture management. The Forest Products Laboratory identifies moisture control during transit, storage, and construction as important because moisture changes after drying can be undesirable in service. Keep the intended service environment in mind as the wood is handled and stored, and avoid conditions that allow it to gain or lose moisture before installation.
