LiftMaster error code 1-5 means the opener did not detect the motor turning when it first tried to move. It does not, by itself, prove the motor has failed. Check the door’s path and note what the opener does, then use the symptom-specific checks below. If the code persists, arrange a model-specific diagnosis by a LiftMaster dealer or trained garage-door professional.
Confirm the 1-5 code
On compatible openers with UP and DOWN arrow lights, code 1-5 is one UP flash followed by five DOWN flashes. Wait for the pattern to repeat so you can count it accurately. Openers without this arrow display use a different diagnostic method; check the manual for your exact model rather than applying the flash pattern to it.
Check the symptom before assuming a part has failed
The manufacturer calls code 1-5 “RPM Not Detected.” The opener did not sense the motor spinning just after a command. The door may move only a few inches and stop or reverse, the opener may hum or click without moving the door, or the door may not move at all. These behaviors help guide troubleshooting, but none identifies a failed component on its own.
If the door moves a few inches, then stops or reverses
- Look along the door’s path for an obvious obstruction or binding.
- Follow the owner’s manual to check for issues such as a door lock or a broken spring. Do not dismantle or adjust the door’s counterbalance hardware.
- If you are qualified to perform the manual’s basic checks, inspect travel-module wiring at the module and logic board as the manual directs.
If the problem continues after safe, manual-approved checks, stop and arrange professional diagnosis.

If the opener hums but the door does not move
Record the humming and whether the door moved at all. If the fault continues, the motor, travel module, or another internal opener component may need inspection. The code is not enough to determine which one.
If the opener clicks but the door does not move
Note the clicking and seek an assessment if basic checks do not resolve the issue. The manual distinguishes a click from a hum and lists different possible internal components, so do not use the code alone to choose a replacement part.

If it is a residential jackshaft opener released with the emergency rope
The door may no longer be mechanically engaged with the opener. Reconnect it as directed in the manual for your model, then test operation.
Know when to stop for safety
LiftMaster warns: “Do not disconnect an open garage door from the opener. A weak spring, broken spring, or unbalanced door could cause the door to fall unexpectedly.” The manufacturer also says: “Never adjust or loosen springs, cables, pulleys, or brackets. Contact a trained door technician if you cannot identify the obstruction.”

Stop troubleshooting and contact a trained professional if a spring appears broken, the door is unbalanced, or cables or other high-tension parts look damaged. Do not attempt to adjust or loosen those components.

If code 1-5 persists, LiftMaster’s code-specific support recommends dealer service. A travel module is one possible component for inspection, alongside the motor or another internal opener component; there is no established failure rate that identifies the most likely cause from the code alone.

Before searching for parts, find the opener’s model number on its label and check the model-specific manual and LiftMaster parts catalog. Verify compatibility and the manufacturer’s part designation for that exact model. Do not assume a universal travel module will fit or that replacing one will fix every 1-5 fault.
After a safe check or repair, a successful result is a complete open or close cycle with the code cleared. If the same code returns, have the opener and door inspected by a LiftMaster dealer or trained garage-door professional.
