Connect a new Google Nest speaker or display in the Google Home app: choose Home → Add → Device → Search for device, then follow the prompts to select Wi-Fi and enter its password. If an existing speaker or display needs a different network, first use Settings → Device information → Wi-Fi → Forget this network, then add it again. These steps are for speakers and displays; other Nest products use different procedures.

Which Google Nest device are you setting up?

Google Nest is a product family, not one device with one Wi-Fi menu. This guide’s main instructions cover Nest Audio, Nest Mini, Nest Hub, Nest Hub Max, Google Home speakers and displays, and the 2026 Google Home Speaker. Google’s Wi-Fi instructions separate other products because their setup paths differ.

Nest speakers and displays, including Google Home models Google Home app
Nest Thermostat Google Home app or the thermostat itself, depending on model
Nest cameras and doorbells Google Home or Nest app, depending on device and configuration
Nest Protect Nest app
Nest Connect and Nest x Yale Lock Nest app
Nest Wifi, Nest Wifi Pro, and Google Wifi Google Home app; these are routers or mesh devices, not ordinary Wi-Fi clients

If you mean a thermostat, camera, doorbell, or router, use the matching section below rather than applying the speaker reset instructions.

What you need before setup

  • The Nest speaker or display and its power adapter.
  • A phone or tablet with the Google Home app and access to the Google account and home where the device should appear.
  • The intended Wi-Fi network name and password.
  • A working router and internet connection. Check that another device can join the Wi-Fi and reach the internet; those are separate checks.
  • Your phone near the Nest device during setup. Connect the phone to the intended Wi-Fi where possible. For an existing device, Google says the phone or tablet should use the same Google account associated with the Nest device.

Get the official app for Android or iPhone and iPad. App labels can vary slightly by version, account, or device, so choose the option to add a device if the wording differs.

Connect a new Nest speaker or display

  1. Plug in the device. Wait for it to start. Do not unplug it while setup is in progress.
  2. Open Google Home. Sign in with the Google account you want associated with the device.
  3. Start adding a device. In the app, go to Home → Add → Device → Search for device. If the app presents an automatic setup prompt, you can use it instead.
  4. Choose the right home. If your account has more than one Google Home household, select the one where the Nest should live.
  5. Confirm the device. Follow any sound, code, or identity check in the app. If multiple Nest devices are nearby and it is unclear which one the app found, temporarily unplug the others.
  6. Select Wi-Fi and enter the password. Check the network name before proceeding. Enter the password carefully, including capitalization and special characters. A guest network may work depending on router settings, but guest isolation can prevent devices from communicating with each other.
  7. Finish setup. Follow the remaining prompts for room, name, and optional services. Wait for the app to complete linking the device.

Setup is successful when the device appears in Google Home without an Offline status and you can open its controls. Test it with a basic voice request, such as asking for the weather, or try starting media.

Move an existing speaker or display to a new Wi-Fi network

For Nest speakers and displays, Google’s documented process is to forget the saved network and set up the device again; these products remember one Wi-Fi network at a time. The current Google Home steps are:

  1. Make sure your phone or tablet is signed into the Google account associated with the Nest device.
  2. Open Google Home. Tap Home, then All devices.
  3. Touch and hold the device tile, then tap Settings → Device information → Wi-Fi → Forget this network.
  4. Return to the app home screen and tap Home → Add → Device → Search for device.
  5. Follow setup prompts to select the new network and enter its password.

This is the appropriate first step after replacing a router or changing the Wi-Fi password; it is not necessary to factory-reset the device by default. If Google Home cannot communicate with the device when you try to forget the network, or the Wi-Fi setting is unavailable, proceed to the troubleshooting checks and reset guidance below. Google’s speaker and display Wi-Fi instructions document this workflow.

Optional workaround when replacing a router

If you control the new router, giving it the same Wi-Fi name and password as the old router may let devices that already know those credentials reconnect without individual setup. This is a workaround, not a guarantee: different security settings, network architecture, guest isolation, or band behavior can still prevent reconnection. Use the forget-and-set-up-again process if the device does not come online.

If Google Home cannot find the device

“Not found” means the app has not discovered the device; it is different from finding the device but failing to join Wi-Fi.

  1. Confirm the Nest is plugged in and powered on.
  2. Check that the phone is on Wi-Fi and can access the internet.
  3. Turn on Bluetooth if the app requests it.
  4. Move the phone closer to the Nest, and temporarily move the Nest closer to the router.
  5. Close and reopen Google Home, then check that you are using the account for the intended home.
  6. Restart the phone. Unplug the Nest, wait briefly, and plug it back in.
  7. Retry Home → Add → Device → Search for device.

If it still cannot be discovered, determine whether it was previously configured on another network. If so, use the forget-network procedure when the device is still accessible in the app; reserve a factory reset for cases where that documented path fails.

If the Wi-Fi network is missing or the password is rejected

The network does not appear

  1. Check that another device can see and join the intended Wi-Fi network.
  2. Restart the router, then the Nest device, and retry with the phone and Nest near the router.
  3. Make sure the phone has not switched to mobile data or another network during setup.
  4. If the network name is hidden or the router has an unusual configuration, consult the router’s settings and the instructions for your specific Nest model. Google’s general guide does not establish one Wi-Fi band or security setting as a universal fix.
  5. If this is a previously configured speaker or display, forget its saved network before trying setup again.

The app says the password is wrong

  • Check uppercase and lowercase letters, spaces, and similar characters such as O versus 0 or l versus 1.
  • Confirm that you selected the intended network rather than a similarly named neighbor or extender.
  • Check whether the router password changed, or whether the router requires device approval or uses access controls such as MAC filtering.
  • Test both Wi-Fi access and internet access on another device. A Nest can join a router that itself has no working internet connection.

Do not assume that splitting 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, disabling band steering, or changing security mode is required for every Nest model. Such settings are router- and device-specific troubleshooting options, not universal setup prerequisites.

Factory-reset only when the normal change fails

Google recommends troubleshooting and restarting before a factory reset. Reset only if the ordinary Wi-Fi-change steps fail, the app reports “could not communicate with your [device]” while forgetting the network, Wi-Fi settings cannot be changed, or the device cannot be added to another network.

Warning: A factory reset is irreversible, cannot be started by voice command or through Google Home, clears device data, and disconnects the device from home members. Depending on the product, associated information such as video history may also be affected. Save important video history where applicable before resetting. See Google’s model-specific reset instructions and consequences.

2026 Google Home Speaker Switch the microphone off, then press and hold the top center. Reset begins after about five seconds; keep holding for approximately ten more seconds until the confirmation sound.

Set it up again after reset

  1. Wait for the reset to finish and the device to return to setup mode.
  2. Open Google Home and select the correct account and home.
  3. Tap Home → Add → Device → Search for device, then select the reset device.
  4. Confirm any sound or code requested by the app, choose Wi-Fi, and enter the password.

Different Wi-Fi steps for other Nest products

Nest Thermostat

Depending on the thermostat model, select the thermostat in Google Home and use Settings → Device information → Wi-Fi, or use the thermostat itself: Quick View → Settings → Network, then choose the network and enter its password. You need to be near the thermostat to change its Wi-Fi information. See Google’s product-specific Wi-Fi instructions.

Nest cameras and doorbells

The procedure varies by device and configuration: it may use Google Home, the Nest app for some older configurations, or removal and re-adding. Save important clips before removing a camera, because doing so can affect video history.

Nest Protect

In the Nest app, go to Settings → Select Protect → Device options → Wi-Fi connection, then choose the network and enter its password.

Nest Connect and Nest x Yale Lock

Bring the phone or tablet into the same room as Nest Connect. In the Nest app, go to home screen → Settings → Nest Connect → Select the Connect → Wi-Fi Connection → Start.

Nest Wifi, Nest Wifi Pro, and Google Wifi

These are router or mesh systems, so they are not set up like a Nest speaker joining a router. Google says Nest Wifi and Google Wifi generally use DHCP by default; some DSL, fiber, or ISP configurations may require PPPoE or a static IP. For a restart, Google’s documented order is to power off the modem and Google Wifi/Nest Wifi equipment, power on the modem and wait until it is fully online, then power on the primary router or point followed by additional points. Reopen Google Home and run a mesh test.

Confirm which connection problem you have

  • App cannot find the device: check power, proximity, Bluetooth when requested, account, and discovery steps.
  • App finds it but Wi-Fi setup fails: check network selection, password, router access controls, and internet availability.
  • Device joins but later shows Offline: check router and internet status, then the device’s proximity to the router.
  • Device is online but casting or voice control fails: check that the phone and Nest can communicate on the same home network and that guest or isolation settings are not separating them.
