How to Factory Reset Your TV: A Comprehensive Guide

A factory reset can clear saved settings, accounts, apps, and network details—but the steps vary by TV platform. Find the right reset path and know what to do before and after.

A factory reset returns a TV to its initial setup state and can remove saved settings, apps, accounts, and network information. Try a restart or a smaller, targeted reset first unless you are preparing the TV for another owner. The exact steps and data removed depend on the TV’s brand, model, and operating system.

Before you reset your TV

A reset may remove installed apps, streaming and manufacturer-account information, Wi-Fi settings, picture and sound preferences, input and channel configuration, accessibility settings, and parental controls. Some Google TV and Android TV models may also erase camera-device data. The manufacturer’s instructions for your model define what its reset removes; do not treat a reset as a forensic data-erasure guarantee. Roku, Sony, LG and Samsung describe different reset behavior.

A reset normally restores settings and setup state; it does not necessarily reinstall the TV’s original firmware or fix a hardware fault. Before starting:

  • Find the TV’s exact model number, usually on its rear label or in its settings/About screen. Menu paths and button procedures vary by model and software version.
  • Have the Wi-Fi password, streaming-service logins, and any required two-factor authentication available.
  • Record any parental-control PIN, antenna channels, preferred inputs, picture and sound modes, accessibility preferences, and soundbar or receiver configuration you may want to restore.
  • Keep the remote nearby and do not unplug the TV while a reset or recovery operation is underway unless the manufacturer’s instructions tell you to.
  • If troubleshooting, identify connected HDMI devices and cables so you can determine whether the fault is in the TV or an external device.

Some models provide a reset that preserves network settings, but that option is not universal. For example, newer LG menus may offer “Reset all except network settings”; check the exact model’s instructions before choosing it. LG reset options

Choose the right kind of reset

A full factory reset is useful for persistent software problems, corrupted configurations, or preparing a TV for another owner. If the problem is limited to one feature, a narrower fix can avoid setting everything up again.

Option What it changes When it may help
Restart or power cycle Reloads the TV without intentionally clearing its setup A temporary freeze, sluggish menus, or an app glitch
Picture or sound reset Restores audio or video settings Only picture or sound preferences are wrong
Network reset Clears or refreshes network configuration The TV alone has a Wi-Fi or connection problem
App or Smart Hub reset Targets a platform or app-related issue One app, or Samsung Smart Hub, is malfunctioning
Factory reset Returns the TV to initial setup and removes data covered by that model’s reset process Persistent software trouble or ownership transfer

Roku recommends trying a system restart before a factory reset when troubleshooting; Samsung offers separate diagnostics and reset options; LG documents an A/V reset for picture and sound problems. Roku TV guidance · Samsung reset options · LG A/V reset

Identify the TV platform

Use the brand and model number, not screen size, to find the correct instructions. A TV may run Roku TV, Google TV, Android TV, LG webOS, or Samsung’s platform. A streaming box connected to the TV is a separate device: resetting a Roku player or Apple TV box does not reset the television display.

If the menu is inaccessible

Physical reset procedures depend on the TV series and model. Some sets have a recessed button; others use different physical controls. Roku notes that holding a button too long can start Recovery Mode on some devices. Do not rely on a universal button combination: look up the exact model’s instructions at Roku support or the TV manufacturer’s support page. If the TV will not power on, use the model-specific guidance at Roku TV will not power on.

How to factory-reset an LG TV

LG’s menu path depends on webOS version and model year:

  • webOS 6.0 through webOS 25: Settings → All Settings → General → System → Reset to Initial Settings. Some newer models offer Reset All or Reset all except network settings.
  • webOS 5.0, generally 2020 models: Settings → All Settings → Support → Reset to Initial Settings.
  • webOS 4.5 and earlier: Settings → All Settings → General → Reset to Initial Settings.

These paths are from LG’s U.S. guidance; confirm the menu for your exact model if it differs. Initialization can erase installed apps, personal settings, saved information, account settings, passwords, and downloads. After confirmation, the TV restarts and displays its initial setup screen. How to factory-reset a Samsung TV

A common current path is Settings → General & Privacy → Reset, then enter the PIN, select Reset, and confirm with OK. Some Samsung models instead place the option under Settings → Support → Self Diagnosis → Reset. Samsung lists 0000 as the default PIN if it has not been changed; use the owner-set PIN if there is one. If neither path matches, consult the manual for the model. Samsung reset instructions

Samsung’s “Reset” behavior can differ by model and may leave network settings in place. Smart Hub, picture, and sound resets are separate options; use Smart Hub reset when the problem is limited to Smart Hub or apps, and network testing for connectivity problems. Resetting an Apple TV box is not resetting the television

If you have lost the remote

  1. Try the TV maker’s official mobile app if the television is powered on, discoverable, and already connected to the same network as your phone.
  2. Try the TV’s physical controls; available functions vary by model.
  3. Use a compatible replacement remote matched to the exact model.
  4. Try a USB keyboard or mouse only if the TV supports it.
  5. If none of these gives access to the menus, follow the manufacturer’s exact model-specific forced-reset procedure or contact support.

A phone app is not a guaranteed remote replacement: it may not find a TV that is offline or not paired.

  • Simple setup – Add two AAA batteries (not included) and enjoy easy automatic code search and direct code entry programming, as well as master volume control to adjust the audio no matter which device is being used

If the TV is frozen, has a black screen, or will not respond

  • Menus still work: Use the normal reset menu if a full reset is appropriate.
  • It is temporarily frozen: Try a restart or power cycle first, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • There is sound but no picture: A reset may not repair a failed backlight, panel, mainboard, input device, or connected cable.
  • The remote does not work: Check batteries, pairing requirements, and physical TV controls before assuming the TV needs a reset.
  • The reset appears stuck or the TV cannot display setup afterward: Do not repeatedly unplug it. Follow the model’s recovery instructions and check power, HDMI devices, and other connected equipment.

Roku describes Recovery Mode as an invasive option to use only after other methods fail. Follow the applicable Roku recovery guidance rather than improvising.

What to do after the reset

A successful reset usually returns the TV to an initial setup or guided-setup screen. Follow the prompts to select language and location, connect to a network, and complete any account or update steps. Then reinstall apps, sign in to streaming services, restore inputs and audio equipment, rescan antenna channels if needed, and reapply parental controls and accessibility preferences.

If the TV returns to the previous owner’s apps, accounts, or personalized home screen, the reset may not have completed or the wrong reset option may have been selected. Check the model’s instructions before trying again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before selling or giving away your TV

  1. Use any separate sign-out or profile-removal option the manufacturer provides; signing out alone does not replace a full reset.
  2. Perform the full factory reset and wait for the initial language, location, or guided-setup screen.
  3. Leave the TV at that setup screen. Do not reconnect it to your network or sign in again.
  4. Remove external streaming boxes, USB drives, cameras, antenna accessories, and HDMI devices.
  5. Include the remote, power cable, stand, and model information as appropriate.

For Roku TVs, a full reset unlinks the TV from the Roku account and removes apps and account information; TCL recommends a full reset when transferring a TV to another owner. Roku transfer guidance · TCL personal-information guidance
