How to Connect an Amazon Echo to Your Phone or Tablet via Bluetooth

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To connect your phone or tablet to an Amazon Echo, turn on Bluetooth, say “Alexa, pair”, then select the Echo in your device’s Bluetooth settings. Once connected, audio from the phone or tablet—such as music, podcasts, videos, audiobooks, and browser audio—plays through the Echo’s speaker.

This sends audio from the mobile device to the Echo. It does not turn the Echo into a universal Bluetooth microphone or replace the Echo’s normal Wi-Fi connection.

Before you start

  • The Echo is powered on and has already been set up in the Alexa app.
  • Your phone or tablet supports Bluetooth audio and has Bluetooth enabled.
  • Both devices are close together during setup. Apple gives an approximate Bluetooth range of 33 feet (10 metres), but walls and interference can shorten it. See Apple’s iPhone Bluetooth guidance.
  • Disconnect other Bluetooth headphones, speakers, cars, or tablets that might take priority.
  • The Echo is not already being used by another Bluetooth audio source.

An Echo normally needs to be configured with the Alexa app, Wi-Fi, and an Amazon account before Bluetooth pairing. Some third-party Alexa-enabled products may not support Bluetooth, so check the specific model if the device never appears.

Fastest method: pair with a voice command

  1. Open Bluetooth settings on your phone or tablet and turn Bluetooth on.
  2. Say “Alexa, pair” or “Alexa, pair Bluetooth.”
  3. Wait for Alexa to say that it is searching.
  4. In the phone or tablet’s available-devices list, tap the Echo.
  5. Wait for the connection confirmation, then start playing audio.

The Echo may appear under a custom name rather than simply “Echo.” If you have several devices, use the room or device name shown in the Alexa app to identify the correct one. Amazon documents this voice-pairing method in its Bluetooth guide.

Pair through the Alexa app

Use the app if voice pairing does not work or you want to manage saved Bluetooth devices:

  1. Open the Alexa app.
  2. Tap Devices.
  3. Select the relevant Echo.
  4. Open Device Settings.
  5. Tap Bluetooth Devices.
  6. Select Pair a New Device.
  7. Choose your phone or tablet when it appears.

Older versions of the app may show Devices → Echo & Alexa → [your Echo] before displaying Bluetooth options. Labels can vary by app version, country, Echo model, and Alexa interface.

iPhone and iPad instructions

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Bluetooth.
  3. Turn Bluetooth on.
  4. Put the Echo into pairing mode by saying “Alexa, pair.”
  5. Tap the Echo under the available-devices list.

If you use the Alexa app to discover or manage the connection, check Settings → Privacy & Security → Bluetooth and allow Bluetooth access for Alexa. Apple explains this permission in its Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance.

Reconnect after the first pairing

Some previously paired devices reconnect automatically when Bluetooth is enabled and the device returns within range, but automatic reconnection is not guaranteed. If it does not reconnect:

  • Say “Alexa, connect to my phone.”
  • Tap the saved Echo name in the phone or tablet’s Bluetooth list.
  • If multiple devices are saved, select the correct Echo connection manually or use its specific device name.

Phones may prioritise recently used headphones, cars, watches, or other speakers instead.

Disconnect or forget the Echo

Temporarily disconnect

Say “Alexa, disconnect from Bluetooth.” You can also disconnect from the phone’s Bluetooth settings. This ends the current audio connection without necessarily deleting the saved pairing.

Forget on iPhone or iPad

  1. Go to Settings → Bluetooth.
  2. Tap the information button beside the Echo.
  3. Tap Forget This Device, then confirm.

Forget on Android

  1. Open Bluetooth settings.
  2. Find the Echo under saved or paired devices.
  3. Tap its settings icon.
  4. Choose Forget, Unpair, or the equivalent option.

Forgetting is useful when an old pairing is corrupted or the Echo repeatedly connects to the wrong household device.

Troubleshooting Bluetooth pairing

Problem What to try first
The Echo does not appear Say “Alexa, pair” again, refresh the Bluetooth list, move closer, and disconnect other Bluetooth accessories.
Alexa cannot find the phone Confirm Bluetooth is on, keep the phone’s Bluetooth screen open, stop its connection to another speaker, and retry.
The device says “paired” but not “connected” Tap the Echo under saved devices or say “Alexa, connect to my phone.” Pairing means the devices remember each other; connecting means an active link exists.
Audio still plays from the phone Open the phone’s media-output or audio-output selector and choose the Echo. Also check that headphones, AirPlay, Chromecast, or a car is not selected.
The Alexa app keeps searching Stop the scan and pair from the phone’s native Bluetooth settings after saying “Alexa, pair.”
The connection drops Move the devices closer, remove obstacles, disconnect unused Bluetooth devices, and restart both devices.
The Echo connects to the wrong device Disconnect or forget old phones and tablets, then manually select the intended device.

For Android-specific Bluetooth problems, Google recommends cycling Bluetooth, checking the pairing state, and restarting the devices in its troubleshooting guide. Apple recommends checking proximity, power, discovery mode, and whether the accessory is already paired elsewhere.

What Bluetooth does—and does not—do

Bluetooth is useful when you want the Echo to play audio from almost any mobile source, including browser tabs, podcasts, audiobooks, videos, and apps that Alexa does not directly support. The phone remains the source, however, so it must stay nearby and its audio output must remain directed to the Echo.

Notifications and incoming calls may interrupt playback or be routed through the Echo depending on the phone, operating system, and app. Do not assume that every Echo and phone combination supports full hands-free calling or uses the Echo as the phone’s microphone.

Bluetooth also does not replace Wi-Fi. The Echo still needs its normal network setup for Alexa’s internet-based features and direct streaming services. If the service you use is supported directly by Alexa, direct playback can be more convenient because it does not depend on the phone staying connected.

Finally, Bluetooth pairing is different from connecting Bluetooth headphones or a separate speaker to the Echo. This guide covers the reverse direction: phone or tablet audio playing through the Echo.
