If you have an Echo Show or another supported screen-equipped Echo, you may be able to complete setup directly on its display.
Computer-based browser setup is now a legacy option, while running the Alexa app in an Android emulator is unofficial and technically unreliable.

First, identify the Echo you are setting up
The answer depends mainly on whether the device has a screen and whether it has already been registered.
- Screenless Echo: Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Pop, Echo Studio and similar models normally require the Alexa app for initial setup or re-registration.
- Echo Show or another screen-equipped Echo: Supported models can generally enter Wi‐Fi details and sign in to Amazon directly on the device.
- Already-registered Echo: Changing its Wi‐Fi normally still requires the Alexa app if the device is screenless.
- Third-party Alexa-compatible device: Its setup process may use Amazon Frustration-Free Setup or the manufacturer’s app. That is different from setting up an Echo speaker.
Amazon staff stated in November 2024 that the browser version of Alexa had been deprecated and that a screenless Echo could not be set up without the Alexa app. See Amazon’s clarification.

Best genuinely app-free method: set up an Echo Show on its screen
If you have a supported Echo Show, try on-device setup first:
- Plug in the Echo Show and wait for the startup screen.
- Select the language and region if prompted.
- Choose your home Wi‐Fi network.
- Enter the Wi‐Fi password with the on-screen keyboard.
- Sign in to the Amazon account that should own the device.
- Wait for registration, updates and setup to finish.
Exact prompts vary by model, firmware, language and region. Amazon describes Wi‐Fi selection and Amazon-account sign-in as part of the setup process for screen-equipped Echo devices in its Echo setup guide.
An Echo Show can configure itself this way; its screen should not be treated as a universal remote setup tool for a separate screenless Echo.

Most reliable workaround: borrow a phone or tablet
If your Echo has no screen, temporarily using a compatible iPhone, iPad or Android phone or tablet is usually the simplest solution.
- Install the official Alexa app from the device’s normal app store.
- Sign in with the Amazon account that should own the Echo.
- Plug in the Echo and wait for its setup indication. On many models, an orange light indicates setup mode, but light behavior varies.
- In the Alexa app, open Devices.
- Select the + button or Add Device.
- Choose Amazon Echo and select the correct model.
- Choose the home Wi‐Fi network and enter its password.
- Wait until setup completes, then test the Echo with a timer or weather request.
Menu names can change as the app is updated. Amazon’s consumer instructions use this app-based device-add process; see Amazon’s setup steps.

When finished, sign out of the borrowed device and uninstall the app if appropriate. Do not save your Amazon password or payment information on someone else’s phone.
Can a laptop or desktop replace the Alexa app?
The Alexa.com browser method is legacy and unreliable
Older Amazon forum instructions described opening alexa.amazon.com, signing in, choosing Settings, selecting Setup a new device, and connecting the computer temporarily to the Echo’s setup network.
Do not treat this as a dependable current solution. Amazon later said that the Alexa browser version had been deprecated. Depending on the device and account, the site may redirect, omit setup controls or work only with certain legacy flows. A website loading successfully does not prove that new Echo registration is supported.
Never enter Amazon credentials or Wi‐Fi passwords into third-party websites claiming to provide Alexa setup. Use Amazon domains and official app-store listings only.
The Alexa Windows app is not a guaranteed replacement
The existence of an Alexa application for a computer does not establish that it can perform the mobile app’s first-time Echo provisioning flow. For a screenless Echo, a borrowed mobile device remains the more dependable option.

Android emulator: an unofficial last resort
If you have no smartphone but do have a capable computer, you can try running the official Android Alexa app inside a reputable Android emulator.

- Install the official Alexa Android app inside it.
- Sign in to Amazon.
- Put the Echo into setup mode.
- Attempt setup through the virtualized Alexa app.
This is not a supported desktop setup method and is not truly “without the app.” It runs the mobile app in a virtual environment. Setup can fail because the emulator cannot access Bluetooth Low Energy, discover local devices, switch the computer to the Echo’s temporary Wi‐Fi, or obtain the required network permissions. Corporate computers may also block virtualization or app installation.
Amazon forum guidance mentions an Android emulator as a possible computer-based option, but Amazon may not provide normal troubleshooting for an Echo configured this way.
What the temporary “Amazon-…” Wi‐Fi network means
During manual setup, a screenless Echo may broadcast a temporary Wi‐Fi network whose name begins with Amazon- or includes a device identifier. This is a provisioning network, not your finished internet connection.
The phone or computer may temporarily report that this network has “no internet.” That is expected: the device is connected to the Echo, not yet to the router. The setup process must then pass your home network name and password to the Echo. The Echo should leave its temporary network and join the home network afterward.

If the temporary network does not appear:
- Restart the Echo and wait for the setup indicator.
- Move the Echo closer to the router and phone or computer.
- Turn Wi‐Fi off and on again on the phone or computer.
- Temporarily disable a VPN.
- Check that the phone or computer is not automatically reconnecting to another saved network.
- Remember that an emulator may not control the host computer’s Wi‐Fi adapter.
Older Amazon instructions describe this manual fallback, but the exact sequence varies by model and current app version.
Changing Wi‐Fi on an Echo that was already registered
If the Echo remains linked to your Amazon account, the documented app route is:
- Open the Alexa app.
- Select Devices.
- Select the Echo.
- Open Device Settings.
- Select Change or remove a Wi‐Fi network.
- Choose a saved network or select Join another Wi‐Fi Network.
- Follow the prompts.
See Amazon’s Wi‐Fi settings guidance. If the Echo is offline and screenless, do not assume that a browser or voice command can replace the app.

Amazon documents support for common 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz home Wi‐Fi networks using 802.11a/b/g/n standards. Echo devices cannot connect to ad-hoc or peer-to-peer networks. See Amazon’s network guidance.
Setup may fail on networks with:
- Guest-network isolation or client isolation.
- Hotel, dormitory or workplace captive portals that require a browser sign-in.
- Hidden network names.
- MAC filtering or access-control lists.
- Band-steering problems between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.
- Router security settings incompatible with an older Echo generation.
- VPN or firewall rules that block local discovery.
For initial setup, place the Echo near the router—Amazon recommends roughly 30 feet or 10 meters during troubleshooting—use the included power adapter, verify the password manually and try the other band if your router exposes separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names. Amazon’s Echo Wi‐Fi troubleshooting guide also recommends restarting the router and Echo, reducing congestion and moving the device away from interference such as microwaves and baby monitors.

When to restart or factory-reset the Echo
A reset may be appropriate when the Echo belonged to someone else, remains registered to another account, has invalid stored Wi‐Fi credentials, or will not enter setup mode after ordinary restarts.
Do not use one universal button combination for every Echo generation. Reset controls differ by model. Use the model-specific Amazon instructions or the device’s quick-start guide. A factory reset erases locally stored configuration and Wi‐Fi credentials, but it will not fix a captive portal, an incompatible router setting, weak signal or missing setup hardware.
What another Echo, Fire TV or Matter device can—and cannot—do
A nearby Echo or Fire TV is not a universal replacement for the Alexa app when registering a new consumer Echo. Amazon’s Frustration-Free Setup documentation describes specific supported provisioning programs for eligible products; it does not establish a general Echo-to-Echo setup method. Similarly, Matter devices are added to Alexa after a compatible Echo is already set up. Matter does not provide a general way to connect a new screenless Echo to Wi‐Fi without the app. See Amazon’s Matter support documentation.

Bottom line
A screenless consumer Echo generally cannot be set up through a fully supported app-free method today. Borrowing a compatible phone or tablet is the simplest and most reliable workaround. A supported Echo Show may be configured directly on its display. The Alexa website is a legacy possibility rather than a dependable current solution, and an Android emulator should be considered only an unofficial last resort.
