Existing Google Home users currently need to opt in to Gemini for Home early access to be considered for the staged voice-assistant upgrade. In the Google Home app, go to Profile picture or initial → Home settings → Early Access. Enrollment does not activate Gemini immediately: it places your home in the invitation process.
Google says the switch from Google Assistant to Gemini for Home is permanent, so read the warning carefully before accepting the upgrade. Basic voice-assistant functions do not require Google Home Premium, although some advanced features do.

Is Gemini for Home early access required?
For existing compatible speakers and displays, early access is currently the way to express interest and become eligible for an invitation during Google’s rollout. It is not necessarily a permanent requirement for everyone once Gemini for Home becomes broadly available.
A new Google Home Speaker can make a home eligible to opt in directly, but existing users do not need to buy new hardware merely to request access.

How to sign up for Gemini for Home early access
1. Check your Google Groups setting
- Sign in to Google Groups with the Google Account used for Google Home.
- Open Settings → Global settings.
- Enable Add me to their groups, then save.
Use a personal Google Account. Google’s current guidance says Workspace accounts are not supported for this voice-assistant upgrade path.
2. Update Google Home
Install the latest Google Home app from your device’s app store. Google’s documented minimum for the voice-assistant eligibility check is version 4.1 or later, although later product notes refer to version 4.12 or newer for the broader 2026 rollout. Updating to the latest available version is the safest approach.
3. Open the correct enrollment screen
- Open the Google Home app.
- Tap your profile picture or initial in the top-right corner.
- Tap Home settings.
- Tap Early Access.
- Follow the enrollment instructions shown in the app.
Do not use a device’s Preview Program setting for this. That program concerns pre-release firmware, not the Gemini for Home voice-assistant upgrade.
Signing up does not activate Gemini immediately
Early access is an invitation queue, not an instant beta download. The process is:

What you need before enrolling
- A personal Google Account rather than a work or corporate Workspace account.
- A supported country and assistant language.
- The latest Google Home app.
- An online, compatible speaker or display with current firmware.
- Google Groups membership settings that allow you to be added to groups.
Google’s troubleshooting guidance lists Cast firmware 3.76 or later for speakers and Fuchsia firmware 28 or later for displays. Older devices may support most Gemini for Home features but not every feature, including Gemini Live on older speakers and displays.
Do you need Google Home Premium?
No—not for the basic Gemini for Home voice assistant. Google lists basic functions such as smart-home control, media search and playback, alarms, timers, calendars, notes, lists, reminders and general questions without requiring a subscription.
Premium is relevant to selected advanced features, not basic eligibility or guaranteed rollout access.
| Feature category | Subscription status |
|---|---|
| Basic Gemini for Home voice assistant | Google lists basic access without a subscription |
| Gemini Live | Premium feature |
| Help me create | Premium feature |
| Advanced camera intelligence | Plan- and device-dependent |
| Searchable or extended camera history | Primarily Premium, with plan differences |
US Google Store pricing shown on August 16, 2026 listed Google Home Premium Standard at $10 per month or $100 per year, and Advanced at $20 per month or $200 per year. Prices and feature bundles can change, so check the current Google Store page before subscribing.

- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Buying Premium does not guarantee immediate Gemini voice-assistant access. Enrollment, rollout timing, compatibility, country and language remain separate requirements.
Do not confuse the three Google Home preview programs
| Program | What it controls | Is it the Gemini voice-assistant sign-up? |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini for Home early access | Invitation to upgrade the home’s voice assistant | Yes |
| Google Home app Public Preview | Experimental Google Home app features | No |
| Device Preview Program | Pre-release speaker, display, Chromecast or streaming-device firmware | No |
Google describes these as separate programs in its preview-program guidance. Older instructions may show a different menu path, so update the app and look specifically under Home settings → Early Access.
What changes after the upgrade?
Gemini for Home voice assistant is a home-level change rather than a setting for one individual speaker. When enabled:
- Everyone in that Google Home receives access.
- Compatible devices in the home use Gemini for Home instead of Google Assistant.
- Devices added later are included.
- A device that becomes compatible later may switch automatically.
Important: Google says the switch cannot be reversed. Resetting a speaker, leaving a preview program or changing a device setting will not restore Google Assistant. If your household depends on familiar Assistant behavior and cannot accept a permanent change, wait before accepting the upgrade.

How to confirm Gemini for Home is active
- Open Google Home.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Home settings.
- Check the assistant listing. It should say Gemini for Home voice assistant, not Google Assistant.
You can also check the voice name. Google says names such as Red indicate Google Assistant, while names such as Pothos indicate Gemini for Home. Another check is to ask the assistant who it is; an active Gemini assistant should identify itself as a language model.

Why is Early Access missing?
Work through this checklist in order:
- Account: Confirm you are using a personal Google Account and have enabled Add me to their groups in Google Groups.
- App: Update Google Home. The documented minimum is version 4.1, but the latest available version is recommended.
- Menu: Look under Profile picture or initial → Home settings → Early Access, not the device-level Preview Program.
- Country and language: Confirm that both your market and preferred assistant language are supported. A supported language is not automatically available in every country where it is spoken.
- Firmware: Check that speakers have Cast firmware 3.76 or later and displays have Fuchsia firmware 28 or later.
- Rollout: Google may not yet have enabled enrollment or invitations for your home.
- Dismissed notification: Check the Google Home app for the invitation or inbox if you previously selected Not now. Google says Google Home Premium subscribers may later find the setup prompt there.
Should you sign up?
Sign up now if you want to be considered early, live in a supported market, use a supported language and accept a staged rollout and an irreversible switch.
Wait if your household relies on specific Google Assistant behavior, is concerned about changing voice commands or cannot accept the lack of a documented rollback path. Also wait if your main devices may not support the Gemini features you want.
Buy Google Home Premium only for its specific paid features. It may make sense for Gemini Live, Help me create or advanced Nest camera intelligence. It is not a prerequisite for the basic voice assistant and should not be treated as a workaround for a missing invitation.
Likewise, consider the 2026 Google Home Speaker if you already want new hardware—not simply to force early access. Existing compatible-device owners can request consideration through the Google Home app.
