To clean vinyl floors safely, remove grit while the floor is dry, then damp-mop with a cleaner approved for your specific flooring. Wipe spills promptly and follow the floor maker’s care guide for instructions on rinsing, disinfectants, steam, and stain removal. Sheet vinyl, vinyl tile, LVT, and LVP do not all share the same care rules.
How to clean vinyl floors step by step
-
Remove grit while the floor is dry
Sweep or dust-mop first. You can also vacuum with a hard-surface attachment, but avoid a rotating beater bar. Grit dragged beneath a wet mop can scratch or dull the finish. Shaw and Armstrong both recommend removing loose soil before wet cleaning: Shaw Floors care guide and Armstrong floor-care guide.
-
Damp-mop with a compatible cleaner
Use limited moisture and a cleaner permitted by the manufacturer of your exact floor. Shaw recommends a neutral-pH cleaner for its luxury vinyl. Armstrong recommends occasional washing of covered floor types with its Once ’n Done product. These are brand-specific directions, not universal requirements for every vinyl floor. Follow both the floor-care guide and the cleaner’s label.
-
Address spills and spots promptly
Blot wet spills with a clean, absorbent cloth or towel. If a mark remains, use only a spot cleaner allowed by your floor maker. Shaw says isopropyl alcohol on a clean white cloth may be used on solvent-type spots that water and cleaning agents do not remove; some stains may become permanent. See Shaw’s care instructions before trying it.

Rinse only when directed, then dry
If the cleaner or floor guide calls for rinsing, use the stated method and do not leave standing water on the floor. Shaw advises using a fan or air mover to speed drying if rinsing is needed after wet cleaning.
How often should you clean vinyl floors?
Clean as needed for your household and traffic. Shaw recommends weekly cleaning for its luxury-vinyl floors and more frequent cleaning in high-traffic areas. That schedule is Shaw’s product-specific recommendation, not a universal interval for all vinyl floors. Spills should be blotted when they happen; dry grit should be removed before it is tracked or dragged across the surface.

Which cleaning products are safe to use on vinyl floors?
The safest choice is a product explicitly allowed by the flooring manufacturer. Shaw warns against abrasive, ammonia-based, vinegar-based, and harsh chemical cleaners for its luxury vinyl. Armstrong’s guidance differs for its own floors and names Once ’n Done for occasional washing of covered floor types. Do not assume a cleaner approved for one brand or product is suitable for another.
Armstrong lists Once ’n Done as a 32-ounce concentrate for no-wax vinyl, LVT, and LVP. That product information does not establish current retail availability or suitability for floors from other makers. Check the exact floor guide and product label before use.

Can you use a steam mop on vinyl floors?
Check the instructions and warranty for your exact floor before using steam. Armstrong discourages steam mopping on its floors because heat and moisture may cause damage, and says it has not tested the method. It also warns that damage from a product it has not recommended may not be covered by its warranty. This is Armstrong’s policy; it does not establish a universal rule for every vinyl product. Shaw’s care guide should be consulted for its covered floors.
Should you wax or polish vinyl floors?
Do not use wax, polish, or “mop and shine” products as a general remedy for dull vinyl. Armstrong says its vinyl floors do not need waxing. For any finish product, first confirm that the instructions for your specific floor permit it.

- PH neutral
Can you disinfect vinyl flooring?
Disinfect only with a product and dilution permitted by the floor maker, and follow the disinfectant’s label. Armstrong says properly diluted liquid disinfectant is acceptable on its vinyl floors, but warns that frequent use or incorrect dilution can discolor the surface and make it more slippery. Do not treat that brand-specific guidance as approval for every vinyl floor.
