The easiest safe method is warm water, a small amount of mild dish soap, and a clean microfiber cloth. Wipe in the direction of the visible grain, remove soap residue with a second damp cloth, and dry immediately. Before using vinegar, baking soda, stainless-steel polish, oil, or steam, identify the finish: fingerprint-resistant, black stainless, PrintShield, Smudge-Proof, and stainless-look surfaces may have coatings that those products can damage.

When the finish is unknown: use only warm water, a little mild soap, and soft microfiber until you have checked the appliance’s Use and Care Guide.

First, identify the appliance finish

Not every appliance marketed as stainless steel can be cleaned in the same way. A refrigerator door may be traditional brushed stainless, while its sides, handles, trim, controls, dispenser, and gaskets are plastic, glass, painted metal, or a clear-coated material. A black or fingerprint-resistant front may look like stainless but have a decorative coating that is more sensitive to chemicals and abrasion.

Find the exact model number and check the manufacturer’s Use and Care Guide before using anything stronger than soap and water. Look for finish names such as:

  • Traditional Stainless or Stainless Steel
  • Fingerprint-Resistant Stainless
  • Smudge-Proof
  • PrintShield
  • Black Stainless
  • Matte Black Steel
  • CleanSteel
  • Slate or another colored finish

Also check the surface itself. Brushed stainless usually has faint horizontal, vertical, or diagonal polishing lines. Examine it under side lighting if necessary. If it is a smooth, uniformly colored, coated, or laminated panel, do not assume it can be treated like bare stainless.

For example, GE’s older CleanSteel major-appliance finish was a laminate designed to look like stainless steel, not conventional stainless. GE discontinued that major-appliance line in 2015, but older CleanSteel appliances are still in homes; their care instructions should take priority over generic stainless-steel advice. See GE’s CleanSteel information.

Quick finish decision

Finish or situation Safest starting point Important limitation
Traditional brushed stainless Warm soapy water and microfiber An appliance-approved stainless cleaner may be useful for heavy grease or water spots if the manual permits it.
Fingerprint-resistant stainless Mild soap, warm water, and soft microfiber Many manufacturers prohibit vinegar, stainless polish, ammonia, bleach, window spray, abrasives, and paper towels on the coating.
Black stainless Mild soapy water and a soft cloth Many black-stainless fronts have a clear coat that can scratch or dull.
Smudge-Proof or PrintShield Follow the exact model instructions; soap and water are the conservative default Manufacturers do not all permit the same products. Frigidaire, for example, permits a 50/50 vinegar-and-water solution in some Smudge-Proof range guidance, while other manufacturers prohibit vinegar on comparable coated finishes.
CleanSteel or stainless-look laminate Mild detergent and a soft cloth according to the finish instructions Do not treat it as bare stainless without checking the manual.
Mixed-material appliance Use the appropriate method for each material Keep stainless polish and cleaners off plastic, rubber, glass, painted trim, controls, displays, and gaskets.

GE, KitchenAid, Whirlpool, Bosch, and Frigidaire all provide finish-specific instructions, and those instructions can differ even when two appliances look similar. GE’s fingerprint-resistant guidance is a useful example of how much more restrictive coated finishes can be.

What you need

  • Two clean, soft microfiber cloths
  • Warm water
  • A small amount of mild liquid dish soap
  • A bowl or small bucket
  • Optional: a manufacturer-approved appliance stainless-steel cleaner for traditional stainless only

You do not need a collection of specialty sprays for routine cleaning. A clean cloth matters: even a soft microfiber cloth can drag grit across a finish and cause marks. Do not reuse a cloth that has picked up abrasive particles, metal dust, or dried food.

The safest everyday method

  1. Check the finish and manual. If you cannot confirm the finish, stay with mild soap, warm water, and microfiber.
  2. Turn controls off and let heated surfaces cool. This is especially important for ranges, ovens, cooktops, and range hoods. You generally do not need to unplug a refrigerator or other appliance unless its manual tells you to, but do not clean an energized control area with excess liquid.
  3. Remove loose crumbs and grit. Use a clean, dry microfiber cloth with gentle strokes. Do not grind dry food particles into the surface.
  4. Make a weak soap solution. Use warm water and only a small amount of mild dish soap. KitchenAid gives approximately 1 teaspoon of dish soap per 1 quart of water as a practical reference. More soap is not more effective; detergent residue is a common cause of streaks.
  5. Dampen the first microfiber cloth. Wring it out so it is damp rather than dripping. Do not flood seams, handles, control panels, displays, dispenser openings, or door gaskets.
  6. Wipe with the grain. Use light, overlapping strokes parallel to the visible brushed lines. Do not use circular polishing motions on a brushed front.
  7. Rinse away the soap. Use a second cloth dampened with plain water. This removes the detergent film that can dry into streaks.
  8. Dry immediately. Finish with a clean, dry microfiber cloth, again following the grain. Drying prevents water spots and leaves less residue behind.

For a small fingerprint or smudge, you may need only a slightly damp microfiber cloth. If the mark is greasy, use the weak soap solution, then rinse and dry the area. Put cleaner on the cloth rather than spraying directly at the appliance; Samsung’s exterior-care guidance specifically warns against spraying water directly onto appliance surfaces and cleaners directly onto controls.

How to clean specific problems

Fingerprints and ordinary smudges

Start with a clean, slightly damp microfiber cloth. Wipe in the grain direction and dry with another cloth. For oily fingerprints, use the weak dish-soap solution instead of repeatedly rubbing with a dry cloth. Rubbing harder or polishing in circles usually spreads the oil and makes the mark more visible.

Fingerprints may return quickly on traditional polished stainless. No cleaner permanently makes an appliance maintenance-free. Fingerprint-resistant coatings can reduce the visibility of marks, but they still require the care specified for that coating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Grease and food splashes

Wipe fresh grease and food residue as soon as practical. Use warm water with a small amount of mild dish soap, followed by a plain-water wipe and immediate drying. Avoid soaking the area or allowing liquid to run into seams and controls.

Do not leave acidic foods such as tomato sauce, fruit juice, or marinades on the exterior. Some appliance instructions warn that acidic spills can discolor exterior surfaces. If a spill has dried, lay a warm, damp cloth over it briefly to soften it, then wipe gently rather than scraping.

Streaks

Streaks are usually caused by too much soap, a contaminated cloth, leftover polish or oil, failure to rinse, failure to dry, or wiping across the grain. Correct them by washing the area again with a weak soap solution, wiping with plain water, and drying completely with a fresh microfiber cloth.

Hard-water spots and white mineral scale

White, chalky deposits are usually mineral scale. On traditional, uncoated stainless, diluted white vinegar or diluted citric acid may help if the appliance manual permits acidic cleaners. Some cleaning guidance suggests allowing vinegar to contact a spot for approximately five to ten minutes, then washing with mild soap and water, rinsing, and drying.

  • For appliances, sinks & Outdoor grills: Our spray & appliance cloth stainless steel kit is safe to use on stainless steel refrigerators, sinks, ovens, stovetops, microwaves, range hoods, trash cans, and grill exteriors.

Do not use that procedure on an unknown, fingerprint-resistant, black-stainless, or other coated finish. GE prohibits vinegar and acidic cleaners for its cited fingerprint-resistant finish; KitchenAid and Whirlpool also warn against vinegar on certain coated or black-stainless surfaces. Conversely, Frigidaire permits a 50/50 vinegar-and-water solution in some Smudge-Proof range instructions. The exact model’s manual controls.

Surface rust or tarnish

Small orange or brown marks do not necessarily mean the appliance is failing structurally. Stainless steel resists corrosion through a thin chromium-oxide layer, but steel-wool particles, carbon-steel tools, chloride exposure, bleach, scratches, or trapped food and water can cause surface rust. GE explains the causes and treatment of surface rust in its stainless-steel guidance.

For traditional stainless only, and only when the manual permits it:

  • Try a paste of baking soda and water, rubbing very gently with the grain.
  • For more persistent superficial rust or tarnish, use a liquid, grit-free oxalic-acid cleanser made for the purpose, such as a soft cleanser labeled for stainless steel.
  • Rinse thoroughly with plain water and dry immediately.

Baking soda is not a guaranteed repair, and rubbing aggressively can create visible marks. Never use steel wool or a steel brush. Do not apply a rust treatment to fingerprint-resistant or black-stainless coatings. Pitting, peeling, deep corrosion, or a damaged clear coat generally cannot be corrected by ordinary cleaning and should be referred to the manufacturer or an appliance professional.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Adhesive or protective-film residue

For residue left by a label or protective film, begin with a warm, damp cloth and a little mild dish soap. Do not scrape with a knife, razor, metal tool, or abrasive pad. Avoid solvents unless the owner’s manual specifically approves one for that finish; a solvent that is harmless to bare metal may damage a clear coat, laminate, printed marking, plastic trim, or gasket. If the residue remains, ask the manufacturer for a finish-approved remover.

Scratches, dull areas, and peeling

Cleaning cannot reverse a deep scratch, pitting, peeling coating, or chemical discoloration. Do not try to restore a coated finish with abrasive powder, a scouring pad, baking soda rubbed hard, a melamine sponge, or aggressive polishing. GE states that it has no approved repair method for heavy or highly visible scratches on its cited fingerprint-resistant finish.

Vinegar, baking soda, polish, oil, and other popular options

Vinegar

Conditional, not universal. Vinegar can dissolve mineral deposits on permitted traditional stainless, but it is acidic and may damage or dull a clear-coated finish. Use it only when the model’s instructions allow it, dilute it as directed, keep contact brief, rinse thoroughly, and dry. Never let vinegar sit on a coated finish just because a general cleaning article recommends it.

Baking soda

Conditional. A baking-soda-and-water paste is supported by some manufacturer guidance for superficial rust, tarnish, or stubborn soil on traditional stainless. It is mildly abrasive, so use a light touch and follow the grain. Do not generalize this treatment to fingerprint-resistant, black-stainless, laminate, or painted surfaces.

Stainless-steel polish

Polish is optional, not necessary for regular cleaning. On traditional stainless, an appliance-approved stainless-steel cleaner can help with stubborn grease, water spots, or a desired cosmetic shine. Use only a product labeled for appliance stainless steel, follow both the product label and the appliance manual, apply it to a cloth when possible, and work in small sections.

GE’s directions for one of its stainless cleaners use an application area of about 8 by 8 inches at a time. That is a manufacturer-specific example, not a universal requirement. Keep polish away from plastic, rubber gaskets, logos, control markings, displays, painted trim, and other non-stainless parts. Do not use stainless polish on fingerprint-resistant or black-stainless coatings unless the exact manufacturer expressly approves it. See GE’s cleaner directions for an example of finish and residue precautions.

Olive oil and mineral oil

Oil does not belong in the basic cleaning method. A barely perceptible amount of mineral oil may temporarily improve the sheen of suitable traditional stainless, but it can leave a greasy film, attract dust, and make later cleaning more difficult. Food oils such as olive oil may eventually turn rancid, so they are not a good universal recommendation.

If your manual permits mineral oil and you choose to use it, apply an extremely small amount to a clean cloth—not directly to the appliance—and buff until no greasy residue remains. Do not use oil on coated finishes, plastic, trim, controls, displays, or gaskets. Before applying another stainless cleaner, remove any mineral-oil residue with dish soap and water; GE specifically gives this precaution.

Glass cleaner

Do not treat ordinary glass cleaner as a universal stainless-steel cleaner. Some formulas contain ammonia or other ingredients prohibited by appliance manufacturers. If your model’s instructions specifically allow a glass cleaner for a control panel or glass area, put it on the cloth rather than spraying the panel directly.

Steam cleaners

Do not use a handheld steam cleaner or steam jet on an appliance exterior unless the exact owner’s manual expressly permits it. Steam and concentrated moisture can reach displays, controls, seams, gaskets, adhesives, and other parts. Martha Stewart includes steaming as one possible way to soften hardened residue, but Samsung’s safety guidance warns against high-pressure water and steam-jet cleaners on appliance parts. A warm, damp cloth is the safer general alternative.

What not to use

Product or tool Why to avoid it
Steel wool or steel brushes They can scratch the finish and leave iron particles that promote surface rust.
Scouring pads, abrasive powders, or gritty cleansers They can scratch traditional stainless and permanently damage decorative coatings.
Chlorine bleach or chloride-containing cleaners Chlorides can stain, pit, or corrode stainless, particularly when concentrated or left in contact too long. See the British Stainless Steel Association guidance.
Ammonia It is listed among products that can damage some stainless finishes and coatings; it is unnecessary for routine cleaning.
Oven cleaner It may be too harsh for appliance exteriors, coatings, trim, and adjacent materials.
Unapproved vinegar or other acids They may be acceptable for some uncoated finishes but can damage coated stainless.
Paper towels or newsprint Microfiber is the safer default, and some coated-finish instructions specifically prohibit paper products because they may scratch or dull the surface.
Melamine sponges such as Magic Eraser They are abrasive enough to alter a decorative or clear-coated finish. Avoid them unless the exact manual explicitly permits them.
Steam jets or high-pressure water They can force moisture into controls, seams, displays, gaskets, and other appliance parts.

Never mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia, or another cleaner. If disinfection is required, separate it from ordinary cleaning and use only a disinfectant whose label and the appliance manual permit that specific surface and application. Routine stainless care does not require bleach.

Traditional stainless versus coated stainless

The phrase stainless-steel cleaner can be misleading. A product made for traditional brushed stainless may contain ingredients or polishing agents that are unsuitable for a fingerprint-resistant or black-stainless coating. The surface may be metal underneath, but the visible layer is what you must protect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For traditional stainless, manufacturers commonly allow mild soap and water and may offer an approved polish or cleaner for heavier soil. GE permits mild soap and water, an approved product such as Cerama Bryte, or a baking-soda paste for certain heavy-soil situations. Whirlpool and KitchenAid similarly distinguish ordinary cleaning from optional care products.

For coated finishes, the safest broad rule is narrower: mild soap, warm water, a soft microfiber cloth, and complete drying. GE’s fingerprint-resistant guidance specifically lists stainless cleaners, bleach, abrasives, paper towels, window sprays, ammonia, vinegar, oven cleaners, and alkaline cleaners among products to avoid. Bosch says its black stainless should receive mild soapy water only in the cited care guidance. Whirlpool also warns that black-stainless clear coats can be damaged by harsh cleaners and abrasives.

How to prevent streaks

  • Use less soap than you think you need; approximately 1 teaspoon per quart is enough as a reference.
  • Use a fresh, clean microfiber cloth rather than one carrying grit or old polish.
  • Wipe with the grain instead of in circles or across the brushed lines.
  • Rinse with a second cloth dampened with plain water.
  • Dry immediately instead of allowing water to air-dry.
  • Do not polish a dirty surface; remove food, grease, and detergent residue first.
  • Remove old oil or polish residue with mild soap and water before trying a different product.
  • Use separate cloths for cleaning and final drying.

Appliance-specific cautions

Refrigerators

Keep moisture away from electronic displays, touch controls, ice and water dispensers, seams, door gaskets, and openings. Never spray cleaner directly onto the refrigerator or control panel. Wipe with a minimally damp cloth and dry the area, including around handles and gaskets.

Ranges and ovens

Wait until the range, oven door, knobs, and surrounding surfaces are cool. The stainless exterior, glass cooktop, enamel oven cavity, knobs, control panel, and window may all have different instructions. Do not assume an exterior stainless cleaner is suitable for the oven interior or cooktop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dishwashers

The exterior finish and the stainless interior are separate cleaning problems. Follow the manual for each. Do not use an exterior polish inside the tub. Samsung specifically warns against bleach in dishwashers with a stainless-steel interior; use the model’s approved cleaning procedure instead.

Range hoods

Grease may require several passes with warm water and mild detergent. Clean the exterior with a soft cloth, follow the grain, and dry thoroughly. Remove and clean baffle or grease filters according to the hood’s manual rather than treating them like the exterior panel. Samsung’s hood-care guidance provides an example of this approach.

Microwaves

The stainless exterior, stainless interior cavity, glass door, and control panel may have separate requirements. Keep liquid away from the controls and do not spray directly onto the panel. Some GE guidance permits its Cerama Bryte product for certain stainless microwave interiors, but the model instructions should control.

Troubleshooting after cleaning

The appliance is still streaky

Wash the area again with weak soapy water, using a clean cloth. Follow with a plain-water wipe and dry with a fresh microfiber cloth. The likely culprit is excess detergent, old polish or oil, a dirty cloth, wiping against the grain, or moisture left to dry on the surface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The finish looks dull

Stop adding products. Dullness can come from abrasive damage, a damaged coating, polish residue, oil buildup, a rough cloth, or chemical exposure. On coated stainless, do not attempt abrasive restoration. If the appearance changed after bleach, ammonia, vinegar, oven cleaner, polish, or scrubbing, contact the manufacturer before trying another treatment.

Rust comes back

Look for the source: steel-wool residue, carbon-steel contact, chloride or bleach exposure, scratches, standing water, or food residue. Superficial rust on traditional stainless can sometimes be treated with a permitted baking-soda paste or grit-free oxalic-acid cleanser. If the area is pitted, spreading, peeling, or deeply corroded, cleaning is unlikely to solve it.

A cleaner got onto plastic, rubber, or controls

Wipe it up promptly with a clean cloth dampened with plain water, then dry. Stainless polish can stain, soften, or leave residue on plastic trim, door gaskets, logos, control markings, and other non-stainless parts. Do not scrub the affected area while the product is still present.

Fingerprints return immediately

That is normal on many traditional polished surfaces. Clean only the marked areas when needed, or clean the full front if residue is building up. A coating may make fingerprints less visible, but it does not eliminate routine care.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How often should you clean stainless-steel appliances?

There is no universal weekly or monthly rule. Wipe food, grease, and acidic spills promptly; clean handles and high-touch areas whenever they become visibly dirty; and clean the full exterior when fingerprints, residue, or water spots accumulate. Frequency depends on cooking habits, household traffic, children, pets, and the appliance location.

Some manufacturer guides give category-specific schedules—for example, Samsung gives a monthly exterior-cleaning example for one refrigerator-care guide—but that should not be treated as a requirement for every appliance. The model manual and actual soil level are better guides.

Bottom line

For almost every ordinary fingerprint, splash, or grease mark, use a clean microfiber cloth, warm water, and a small amount of mild dish soap. Wipe with the grain, rinse away soap residue, and dry immediately. Treat vinegar, baking soda, polish, oil, rust removers, glass cleaner, and steam as finish- and model-specific options—not as universal stainless-steel hacks. If you cannot identify the finish, the low-risk choice is soap, water, microfiber, and the owner’s manual.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the easiest way to clean stainless-steel appliances?

Use warm water with a small amount of mild dish soap and a clean microfiber cloth. Wipe with the grain, wipe again with plain water to remove soap, and dry immediately with a second microfiber cloth. This is the safest general method for ordinary grime and unknown finishes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use Dawn on stainless-steel appliances?

A small amount of mild liquid dish soap such as Dawn generally fits the soap-and-water method, but the product name does not override the appliance manual. Use very little, keep the cloth damp rather than dripping, rinse away the residue, and dry completely.

Can I use vinegar on stainless steel?

Only conditionally. Diluted vinegar may remove hard-water scale from traditional, uncoated stainless if the manual permits acidic cleaners. Do not use vinegar on an unknown, fingerprint-resistant, black-stainless, or coated finish unless the exact manufacturer expressly allows it. Some Frigidaire Smudge-Proof instructions allow a 50/50 solution, while other manufacturers prohibit vinegar.

  • 2-in-1 benefits clean while preventing future fingerprints and smudges.
  • Leaves stainless steel surfaces clean, polished and smudge free
  • Regular use extends time between cleanings

Can I use baking soda?

For traditional stainless only, a paste of baking soda and water may help with superficial rust, tarnish, or stubborn soil when the manual permits it. Rub gently with the grain, rinse thoroughly, and dry. Baking soda can scratch if rubbed aggressively and should not be assumed safe for coated finishes.

Can I use olive oil or mineral oil to make stainless steel shine?

Oil is not needed for cleaning and is not a universal fingerprint solution. Food oils such as olive oil can become rancid, while mineral oil can leave a film that attracts dust and complicates later cleaning. If the manual permits it on traditional stainless, use only a barely perceptible amount of mineral oil and buff away every trace. Do not use oil on coated finishes, controls, trim, or gaskets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use Windex or another glass cleaner?

Do not use ordinary glass cleaner as a universal stainless-steel cleaner because some formulas contain ammonia or other ingredients that manufacturers prohibit. If the model manual specifically allows glass cleaner on a control panel or glass area, apply it to a cloth rather than spraying the panel.

Can I use paper towels?

Soft microfiber is the safer default. Some traditional-stainless instructions may allow a paper towel with a specific approved product, but paper towels are prohibited or discouraged for some coated finishes because they can scratch or dull them.

Why are streaks still visible after cleaning?

Common causes are too much soap, a dirty or contaminated cloth, old oil or polish residue, failure to rinse, failure to dry, or wiping across the grain. Rewash with weak soapy water, wipe with plain water, and dry with a fresh microfiber cloth.

How do I remove rust from a stainless-steel appliance?

First confirm that the surface is traditional, uncoated stainless. For superficial rust, try a permitted baking-soda paste or a liquid, grit-free oxalic-acid cleanser made for stainless steel. Rinse and dry thoroughly. Never use steel wool or steel brushes, and do not use abrasive rust treatments on fingerprint-resistant or black-stainless finishes. Pitting or spreading corrosion needs professional assessment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use a Magic Eraser on stainless steel?

It is safest to avoid melamine sponges on appliance fronts, especially fingerprint-resistant and black-stainless finishes, because they are abrasive and can alter the surface. Use microfiber and mild soapy water instead unless the exact manual expressly permits a melamine sponge.

Can I use a steam cleaner?

Not as a universal method. Steam can enter displays, controls, seams, gaskets, and other components, and some manufacturers prohibit steam-jet cleaners. Use a warm, damp cloth unless the exact owner’s manual expressly permits steam on that surface.

How often should I clean the exterior?

Wipe spills promptly and clean handles or visibly dirty areas as needed. There is no schedule that applies to every household or model. Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions for any model-specific frequency.

What should I do if the finish is scratched, peeling, or discolored?

Stop experimenting with cleaners and abrasives. A deep scratch, peeling clear coat, pitting, or chemical discoloration may not be repairable through cleaning. Contact the manufacturer or an appliance-repair professional for the finish and model involved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Use the least aggressive method that works: clean microfiber, warm water, a little mild dish soap, grain-direction wiping, a plain-water rinse, and immediate drying. Specialty products are optional for traditional stainless and potentially harmful to coated finishes, so check the model manual before using anything stronger.
