A washing-machine cleaner tablet or powder can help clean the tub, but it is not a cure for mold on a neglected gasket, a clogged filter, a leak, or a damaged seal. Use it as one part of a maintenance routine—not as a substitute for physical cleaning and ventilation.

Gather:
- Microfiber cloths or soft towels
- A soft detail brush or old toothbrush-style brush
- A manufacturer-approved washing-machine cleaner tablet or powder
- Optional nitrile or rubber gloves, especially when visible mold or bleach-based products are involved
- Your washer’s owner manual
The manual matters because filter access, cycle names, cleaner quantities, dispenser compartments, and bleach compatibility vary by model. Do not assume that a procedure for one brand applies to another.
Remove all laundry and confirm that the washer is not running. If you will open a service cover or drain-pump filter, switch the washer off and unplug it first. Have a shallow container and towels ready because residual water may escape.

If you see mold, ventilate the area and use suitable gloves and eye protection. Never mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia, detergent, or any other cleaner. Treat bleach and a washing-machine cleaner as separate alternatives unless both the appliance instructions and the product label explicitly approve a combination. Physical removal, complete drying, and correcting the moisture source are more important than simply applying a stronger chemical.
Step 1: Clean the rubber door gasket
The gasket is usually the first place to inspect because its folds can hold water, lint, hair, coins, paper, detergent residue, and other debris. The lower fold is particularly easy to overlook.

- Gently pull back the flexible lip without stretching or tearing it.
- Remove trapped objects and loose debris by hand.
- Wipe the gasket face, inner fold, and inside of the door glass with a microfiber cloth and a cleaner permitted by the washer manufacturer.
- Use a soft brush for residue in creases, but do not scrub aggressively enough to damage the rubber.
- Wipe away cleaner and loosened residue, then dry the gasket and glass thoroughly.
Do not pour undiluted bleach directly onto the rubber seal. Straight bleach can deteriorate the gasket. If the seal remains heavily stained after careful cleaning, inspect it for a deeper problem rather than repeatedly increasing the chemical strength.
A gasket that is torn, permanently deformed, or unable to seal correctly may need replacement. Cleaning cannot repair damaged rubber.

Step 2: Clean the detergent dispenser and housing
Detergent and fabric-softener residue can harden inside the drawer, the drawer cavity, and the narrow channels that carry products into the washer. Those areas can become another source of buildup and can also interfere with proper dispensing.
- Remove the dispenser drawer if your model allows it.
- Rinse the drawer with lukewarm water.
- Brush away hardened residue from the compartments, corners, and small channels.
- Clean the cavity where the drawer sits, including the upper surfaces and water outlets that you can safely reach.
- Let the drawer and surrounding parts dry before reinstalling them.
For many households, checking and cleaning the dispenser about weekly is practical. Follow the interval in your owner’s manual if it specifies something different.
Step 3: Check the drain-pump filter—if your washer has an accessible one
Not every front-load washer exposes a user-serviceable drain-pump filter, and access points differ. Consult the manual before removing a cover or filter. Do not force a panel that does not release as described by the manufacturer.
For a model with an accessible filter:
- Turn the washer off and unplug it.
- Locate the service cover using the manual.
- Place a shallow container and towels under the access point.
- Drain residual water carefully using the model’s drain hose or approved procedure.
- Remove debris from the filter.
- Clean the filter and reinstall it, the cap, and any drain hose correctly.
A blocked filter can contribute to poor draining, while water retained in the drum can contribute to persistent odor. If the washer leaks after filter service, will not drain, or repeatedly retains water, stop using a generic cleaning procedure and obtain model-specific repair guidance.

Step 4: Run the empty Tub Clean or Clean Washer cycle
Once the gasket, dispenser, and—where applicable—the filter have been addressed, run the washer’s dedicated maintenance cycle with no clothing inside. Depending on the brand, the cycle may be labeled Tub Clean, Clean Washer, or something similar.
- Confirm the correct cycle and cleaner quantity in the owner’s manual.
- Add a purpose-made washing-machine cleaner tablet or powder, or use another product specifically allowed by the manual.
- Place the product in the instructed location. Do not guess whether it belongs in the drum, detergent drawer, or a particular compartment.
- Run the complete empty maintenance cycle.
- When it finishes, wipe away any remaining moisture and leave the door and dispenser open to air-dry.
Some manufacturers also permit liquid chlorine bleach in a specified dispenser, but the manual controls the amount and placement. Do not combine bleach with a washer-cleaner product during ordinary use. Treat them as alternatives unless the appliance and product instructions expressly say otherwise.

Monthly tub cleaning is common manufacturer guidance, but it is not a universal rule. Some machines use a reminder based on the number of cycles, and some manufacturer instructions describe cleaning once or twice a month. If a musty smell is already present, certain guidance recommends a temporary more-frequent schedule, such as weekly cleaning for several consecutive weeks. Your model’s manual takes priority.
Step 5: Dry the washer after every load
Drying is the part of mold prevention that is easiest to skip and most important to repeat. It reduces the moisture that allows residue and odor-causing growth to persist.

After each load:
- Remove clothing promptly.
- Check the gasket for trapped socks, lint, hair, and other objects.
- Wipe visible water from the gasket, door glass, and accessible drum surfaces.
- Leave the door open or ajar so air can circulate.
- Leave the detergent dispenser open far enough to dry.
Keep the door open only when doing so is safe around children and pets. If the room is poorly ventilated, improve air circulation where practical; the goal is evaporation, not merely masking the smell with fragrance.
A maintenance schedule that is easy to follow

- Do not assume a scented cleaner solves a mechanical problem. It will not repair a torn gasket, blocked filter, leak, or drainage fault.
- Do not improvise the filter procedure. Use the model’s instructions for access, draining, and reinstallation.
- Do not use more chemical than the label or manual permits. Stronger is not automatically safer or more effective.
When cleaning is not enough
Arrange qualified appliance service if any of the following occurs:
