To clean a standard automatic drip coffee maker, unplug it, wash the removable parts, wipe the reservoir and exterior, run an approved descaling cycle, and flush the machine with fresh water before reassembling it. The most important qualification is that your coffee maker’s manual overrides this general method: manufacturers use different solution ratios, water volumes, cycle controls, filter requirements, and cleaning products.
This guide is for conventional automatic drip brewers. Espresso machines, pod brewers, thermal systems, and specialty brewers may require a branded cleaner or a dedicated automatic program instead of vinegar.

Before you start: cleaning and descaling are different
Routine cleaning removes coffee oils, grounds, stains, and residue from the carafe, brew basket, filter, lid, and exterior. Descaling removes mineral deposits from the internal water path and heating components. A coffee maker can look clean while still having scale inside its tubing.

What you need
- Warm water
- Mild dish soap
- A soft, non-abrasive cloth or sponge
- The manufacturer-approved descaler, if required
- An empty carafe
- A clean towel
If your manual permits vinegar, use only plain white vinegar and follow the exact ratio and procedure for your model. Do not mix vinegar with bleach or any other cleaner. If the manual specifies a commercial product, use that product instead. A coffee maker descaling solution is often the more appropriate choice for machines that require or recommend a dedicated descaler, but compatibility still needs to be checked before use.
How to clean a coffee maker in 5 steps
1. Unplug the coffee maker and let it cool
- Turn the coffee maker off.
- Unplug the power cord.
- Wait until the hot plate, carafe, and any remaining liquid have cooled.
- Remove and discard used coffee grounds, a paper filter, a pod, or any other brewing material.
Disconnecting the appliance is both a safety step and a protection against accidental activation while parts are removed. Never immerse the electrical base, power cord, or plug in water. Keep liquid away from the controls and internal electrical components.
Do not put coffee grounds, a pod, or a paper filter into the machine during a cleaning or descaling cycle unless the manufacturer specifically instructs you to do so. Descaling is normally performed with an empty brew basket and carafe.
2. Wash the removable parts
Remove the carafe, carafe lid, brew basket, reusable filter, and any other component your manual identifies as removable. Wash each part in warm water with mild dish soap, rinse thoroughly, and dry it completely.
Pay particular attention to areas where coffee oils collect:
- The underside of the brew basket
- The small opening or valve beneath the basket
- The carafe lid and its hinged or sliding parts
- The reusable filter’s mesh or perforations
- The rim and pouring spout of the carafe
Dishwasher safety is model-specific. Some Hamilton Beach and OXO instructions identify particular baskets, lids, or carafes as top-rack dishwasher safe, but that does not make every coffee-maker component dishwasher safe. Check your own manual before putting anything in a dishwasher. When in doubt, hand-wash the part.
For brown stains or stubborn coffee-oil residue in a glass or stainless-steel carafe, soak the carafe with warm water and mild detergent, then rinse it very thoroughly. A compatible carafe cleaning tablet can be an optional solution for persistent stains, but it is not required for ordinary cleaning and should never be used unless the product and your carafe are compatible.
Recommended Free Tools
Avoid abrasive scouring pads, harsh chemicals, spray cleaners, and anything that can scratch the carafe or leave a chemical film. Scratches can make some carafes harder to clean and may weaken glass over time.

3. Wipe the reservoir and exterior
Use a soft, damp, non-abrasive cloth to wipe the water reservoir, the underside of its lid, the control panel, the warming plate, and the outer housing. Remove spilled coffee and dried splashes before they become baked onto the warming plate.
If the reservoir is removable, rinse it only as the manual permits. Empty it fully and let it dry, or wipe it with a clean lint-free towel. Do not leave lint, paper fibers, or cleaning residue inside the reservoir.
Do not immerse the coffee-maker base, cord, or plug. Do not pour water over the control panel or spray cleaner directly onto the appliance. Put any cleaner onto the cloth instead, and use only products permitted by the manufacturer.

Remove or check the water filter
If the reservoir contains a charcoal or other replaceable water filter, remove it before descaling unless your manual says otherwise. A filter can become saturated with minerals and cleaning solution, and it should not remain in the machine during a descaling procedure unless specifically approved.
Filter replacement schedules vary. Some Cuisinart guidance uses approximately 60 days or 60 uses, while Keurig schedules are model-specific and commonly use about two months. Treat those figures as examples, not universal rules. If your brewer accepts one, a charcoal coffee-maker water filter should be replaced with the correct size and style for that model after checking the manual.
4. Descale the internal water path
Minerals in water can accumulate in the internal tubing and heating system. Scale may slow brewing, reduce water flow, affect temperature, and alter the taste of coffee. Descaling addresses deposits that wiping and dishwashing cannot reach.
Use the manufacturer’s procedure first
Look in the manual or the manufacturer’s support documentation for these specific details:
Rank #3
- Descales your coffee maker, fighting hard water deposits and mineral buildup for a better tasting brew
- Deep cleans without the odor of vinegar
- Compatible with multi-cup and single-serve coffee makers
- Use monthly or as needed to keep your coffee maker looking like new
- U.S. EPA Safer Choice Certified
- Whether the machine uses vinegar, a branded descaler, or another approved product
- The solution-to-water ratio
- The required solution volume
- Whether a clean or descale button must be pressed
- Whether the machine pauses automatically
- Whether a water filter must be removed
- How the clean indicator is reset
These instructions are not interchangeable. For example, some Cuisinart drip models describe a mixture of three parts water to one part vinegar, while Hamilton Beach and Mr. Coffee publish different model-specific quantities and procedures. A ratio that is suitable for one brewer may be too weak, too strong, or unsuitable for another.
General procedure for a conventional drip brewer
- Remove the water filter if the manual requires it.
- Put the approved descaling solution into the reservoir in the specified quantity.
- Place the empty carafe on the warming plate.
- Leave the brew basket empty unless the manual says otherwise.
- Run the machine’s clean or brew cycle according to the instructions.
- If the manual calls for a pause, stop the cycle at the specified point and allow the solution to sit for the stated time.
- Complete the cycle, then discard the used solution.
For one family of Hamilton Beach brewers, the published general process uses one pint of vinegar, a short initial run, a 30-minute wait, and completion of the brew cycle. That is an example of a manufacturer procedure—not a universal recipe. Mr. Coffee also publishes a comparable but brand-specific process.
Do not assume vinegar is safe for every machine. Espresso machines and some specialty brewers require proprietary descalers or automated programs. For example, Breville’s Precision Brewer instructions specify a descaler packet and approximately 34 ounces of warm water for its descale procedure. Breville also distinguishes descaling products from separate group-head, steam-wand, and general cleaning products for espresso equipment.
If your manual permits it, plain white vinegar may be a low-cost alternative for that specific model. If it does not, use the approved product instead. Never substitute vinegar merely because a general internet guide recommends it.
5. Run fresh-water rinses and reassemble
Descaler must be flushed from the machine before coffee is brewed. After the descaling cycle:
- Empty and rinse the carafe.
- Rinse the reservoir if the manual permits.
- Fill the reservoir with clean water.
- Run a complete cycle with no coffee, pod, or paper filter.
- Empty the carafe and repeat the fresh-water cycle as directed.
- Continue rinsing until the cleaner’s smell and taste are gone.
The required number of rinse cycles varies. Some Hamilton Beach instructions call for two additional full-carafe water cycles. Keurig procedures call for repeated fresh-water rinses and additional cycles if a vinegar taste remains. Cuisinart likewise advises a fresh-water cycle or further rinsing according to the model.

Wash or rinse the removable parts again if they contacted descaler. Reinstall the water filter only after the manual’s procedure allows it, and fit a new filter if the old one was due for replacement. Leave the reservoir lid and carafe lid open briefly so the components can dry before storage or normal use.
The coffee maker is ready only when the solution has been thoroughly flushed. If the first post-cleaning pot smells or tastes like vinegar or cleaner, do not drink it; run additional fresh-water cycles.
How often should you clean and descale a coffee maker?
| Task | Suggested timing | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Discard grounds and rinse the brew basket | After every use | Remove wet grounds promptly and rinse or wash the basket. |
| Wash the carafe and removable parts | Daily or after use | Use warm water and mild dish soap; dry before reassembly. |
| Wipe spills and the warming plate | As soon as spills occur | Use a soft damp cloth after the appliance has cooled and been unplugged. |
| Replace a water filter | According to the model’s schedule | Some guidance uses about 60 days or 60 uses; other models commonly use about two months. |
| Descale | According to the manual, water hardness, and usage | Some manufacturers cite one to three months, 90 cycles, or even more frequent cleaning for particular models. |
There is no single correct descaling interval for every coffee maker. Cuisinart guidance includes a one-to-three-month range depending on water hardness. Some Hamilton Beach brewers recommend vinegar cleaning every two weeks, while OXO and Mr. Coffee models may use a 90-cycle reminder. Hard water and frequent brewing generally require more frequent descaling than soft water and occasional use.
Use the machine’s clean or descale reminder as a prompt, but follow the complete manufacturer procedure rather than simply clearing the notification.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What if the coffee maker still runs slowly after descaling?
First, verify that you used the correct product, ratio, volume, and cycle for the exact model. Then repeat the approved descaling process only if the manual permits another cycle. Complete all required fresh-water rinses.
If the flow remains poor, the machine leaks, the pump makes an unusual noise, or the clean indicator returns immediately, stop using it and consult the manual or manufacturer support. Do not disassemble a sealed or non-user-serviceable brewer. Some Keurig manuals, for example, limit user maintenance to the listed procedures.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the wrong vinegar ratio: published ratios are model-specific.
- Leaving a water filter installed during descaling: remove it unless the manual says otherwise.
- Running a cleaning cycle with coffee inside: use an empty brew basket and carafe unless instructed otherwise.
- Skipping the rinse cycles: cleaner residue can affect taste and may remain in the water path.
- Putting every part in the dishwasher: dishwasher suitability differs by model and component.
- Immersing the base: the electrical housing, cord, and plug must stay out of liquid.
- Using abrasive or harsh cleaners: these can scratch surfaces or leave residue.
- Clearing the clean light without cleaning: reset procedures do not remove mineral scale.
- Using espresso-machine tablets as descaler: cleaning tablets and descaling products perform different jobs.
When to use tablets instead of descaler
Cleaning tablets are not automatically interchangeable with descaling solution. A tablet may be intended to dissolve coffee oils from a brew group, valve, or other coffee-contact component, while descaler is intended to dissolve mineral deposits in the water path.
Some espresso machines and compatible brewers specifically require cleaning tablets as part of a separate cleaning program. Use coffee machine cleaning tablets only when the manual and the tablet instructions identify your machine as compatible. Do not put a tablet in the reservoir or brew basket unless the manufacturer’s procedure says to do so.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I clean every coffee maker with vinegar?
No. Some manufacturers publish vinegar procedures, but others require a branded descaler or a dedicated automatic program. Check the exact model manual first, including the ratio, water volume, pause instructions, and filter requirements.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How many times should I rinse a coffee maker after descaling?
Use the number specified by the manufacturer. Some drip-brewer instructions call for two full-carafe fresh-water cycles; other machines require repeated rinses or additional cycles until no cleaner smell or taste remains.
Should the water filter stay in during descaling?
Usually it should be removed, but the model manual controls. A filter may absorb cleaning solution or already be saturated with minerals. Reinstall or replace it only when the instructions permit.
Why does my coffee maker still taste like vinegar after cleaning?
The solution has not been fully flushed. Empty the carafe, fill the reservoir with clean water, and run additional empty fresh-water cycles until the smell and taste disappear.
The Bottom Line
For a standard automatic drip coffee maker, clean the removable parts after use and descale the internal water path on the schedule—and with the solution—specified for your exact model. Unplug the machine, keep the electrical base out of water, never mix cleaners, and run enough fresh-water cycles that no cleaning taste remains.
