Start with the concrete you have and how you will use the surface—not with a colour chart. Jewel Stone is a layered, acrylic-modified cement overlay that can create stone-, tile-, brick- or wood-inspired finishes on prepared concrete. It is worth considering when the slab is suitable for an overlay and you want a customizable decorative surface; a moving, structurally unsound or water-damaged slab needs assessment before a finish is chosen.
What Jewel Stone is—and what it is not
DuROCK describes Jewel Stone as an acrylic-modified cement-based coating system made with cement, silica aggregates, minerals and acrylic binder. Applied in layers over prepared concrete or masonry, it can be textured and coloured to resemble slate, flagstone, fieldstone, brick, tile or wood planks. It is an overlay system, not paint: preparation, coat build, texture, colour, joint layout and sealing all contribute to the finished appearance. DuROCK’s September 2016 specification identifies compatible dry mix, binders, colour packs, sealers and anti-slip resin, so a proposal should describe the system components rather than name only a generic coating.
First decide whether your slab is a suitable base
The existing surface is the most important part of the decision. An overlay follows the substrate; it should not be treated as a repair for movement or structural failure. Have the slab assessed for soundness, movement, cracks, spalling, old coatings, drainage and existing control or expansion joints. A contractor describing Jewel Stone applications likewise notes the need to assess slab condition. Venetian Construction’s installation overview is an example of contractor guidance, not a substitute for a site-specific evaluation.
- Potentially suitable: sound concrete that can be cleaned and prepared for adhesion, with cracks and joints addressed in the installation plan.
- Needs further evaluation: a slab with significant cracking, spalling, movement, persistent moisture or drainage problems, or existing coatings that may interfere with adhesion.
- Do not assume: that an attractive texture or added thickness will stabilize a failing slab. For vehicle loading or other unusual loads, ask the installer to confirm suitability from current product documents and the site conditions.
Choose the look by comparing patterns, colours and samples
DuROCK’s Jewel Stone Colour Guide shows pattern and colour possibilities, including stone-inspired layouts and colours such as Sable, Terra Cotta, Irish Cream, Antique White, Olive Green, Pearl Grey, Slate Grey and Mocha. The guide cautions that displayed colours are representative, not an exact promise of how a finished surface will look.

Before approving a design, compare physical samples with the home’s exterior, trim, landscaping and adjacent paving. Consider the scale of the pattern, texture, grout-like or border lines, and how colour shifts in the actual light. Ask the installer to explain how the proposed layout will meet existing edges, steps, drains and joints.
Match texture, traction and sealer to the location
Use and exposure affect the finish specification. For a walkway, patio, pool edge or other horizontal pedestrian surface that can get wet, ask what anti-slip treatment and texture are proposed. DuROCK’s September 2016 specification calls for anti-slip resin on horizontal pedestrian areas likely to be exposed to water, particularly exterior surfaces. That is a specification requirement, not a claim that every textured overlay is slip-proof. Ask how the selected finish and sealer are intended to perform in the specific wet conditions at your home.

The same specification distinguishes sealer applications for vertical surfaces, light pedestrian traffic, heavy interior pedestrian traffic and exterior use. Have the installer identify the compatible sealer for your location and intended use, and include the sealer and any anti-slip component in the written scope. Confirm current product instructions rather than relying on an old specification alone.

- Prepare the concrete: provide adequate surface roughness using mechanical grinding or shot-blasting, or the specified acid-etch method; remove dust, dirt and contaminants.
- Address cracks and joints: reinforce and pre-coat surface cracks as specified, and plan how control and expansion joints will be carried through or treated.
- Apply primer and base coat: the specification describes a nominal 3.2 mm (1/8-inch) base coat.
- Create and finish the design: it describes a nominal 3.2 mm finish coat, for at least 6.4 mm (1/4-inch) combined thickness on concrete, and calls for curing the base coat before finishing.
- Seal at the right time: the document specifies waiting at least 24 hours after finish-coat application before sealer.
The same dated specification states that ambient and surface temperatures must remain above 4°C (40°F) for at least 72 hours after wet-state material application, subject to its stated sealer exception. Conditions, formulations and instructions can change; ask the contractor to confirm the current manufacturer requirements and how the job schedule will meet them. A contractor’s example sequence—grinding and cleaning, primer, base coat, design, finish coat, then optional stain and sealer—is one described workflow, not a universal schedule. Compare proposals on scope, not just the pattern
There is no reliable comparable installed-cost dataset or universal price established by the cited materials. Ask for itemized proposals that make the preparation and long-term responsibilities clear, rather than comparing a headline price alone.

If you are comparing Jewel Stone with replacement concrete, pavers or natural stone, use the same criteria for each: the condition of the base, appearance, wet-area traction, exposure, maintenance responsibilities and full project scope. Verify suitability for vehicle loading or other demanding use rather than assuming all decorative surfaces are interchangeable.

Sealing is part of the Jewel Stone system, but the available product information does not establish one authoritative resealing interval for every location and use. A contractor FAQ says periodic resealing is part of maintenance; treat that as contractor guidance, not a universal schedule. Before work begins, ask for the current care instructions in writing, including the selected sealer, cleaning guidance, signs that maintenance is due and who is responsible for future resealing. Claims about service life, freeze-thaw performance, project duration or warranty should be checked against the specific written terms for your job; contractor claims do not establish independent comparative test results.
