To clean a Samsung VRT washer’s pump filter, first confirm that your exact model is a front-load washer with an accessible pump-filter panel. Turn the washer off, let hot water cool, drain the remaining water through the emergency hose, then remove and brush the filter before reinstalling it. “VRT” alone does not identify the filter type or access method, so check your model’s Samsung manual before starting.
First identify the filter your washer has
Samsung uses VRT branding on different washer configurations. Its VRT Plus branding includes a front-load model, but VRT also appears on top-load products. The full model number—not the VRT label—determines which filter your washer has and how to access it. Find the model number on the washer and consult its Samsung manual.

What to prepare before cleaning
- Switch off the washer. Samsung Australia’s pump-filter instructions also say to unplug it; follow the safety directions in your model’s manual.
- If the washer has just run a hot cycle, wait one hour for the water to cool before draining it, as Samsung US advises.
- Place a towel and a container large enough to catch the remaining water below the access point.
- Have a small toothbrush or another soft-bristle brush ready. No special branded tool is required.
How to clean an accessible front-load pump filter
- Open the access panel. Find the pump-filter panel, usually near the lower part of the washer. Its location can vary by model.
- Drain the remaining water. Pull out the rubber emergency drain hose and hold its end over the container. Remove the hose cap and let the water drain fully.
- Remove the filter. Once draining is complete, turn the pump filter counterclockwise. Some Samsung models require you to push the cap in while turning.
- Clean and inspect. Brush dirt and debris from the filter with a soft-bristle brush. Check the drain-pump impeller inside the housing for debris, too.
- Reinstall the filter. Turn it clockwise until secured in the vertical position.
- Close up the washer. Firmly replace the drain-hose cap, secure the hose in its retaining clip, and close the access panel.
If your panel, filter, hose, or cap does not match these instructions, stop and use the instructions for your exact model rather than forcing a part. Samsung’s US cleaning guidance provides the pump-filter procedure and model-specific caveat.
How often to clean the filter
Samsung US recommends cleaning the pump filter “at least once per month or approximately every 40 washes, whichever is more frequent.” Keeping it clean helps the washer drain properly and can help prevent odors and reduce the likelihood of mold and mildew. The interval is regional: Samsung Australia’s pump-filter page recommends five to six cleanings a year for Australian models. If you cannot find the filter
Do not assume a top-load washer has a pump-filter door or try to remove a panel that does not appear in the manual. Confirm the full model number, then look up its manual on Samsung’s support site or contact Samsung support for model-specific help. A filter’s location and removal mechanism are not established by the VRT name alone.
