How to Choose the Correct Tile Adhesive or Mortar

The right tile mortar depends on the tile and format, substrate, installation method, and exposure. Learn what ANSI classifications mean, why thin-set cannot level a floor, and what to verify in the product data sheet.

Choose tile-setting mortar by matching the tile and its format to the prepared substrate, the installation method, and the conditions where the tile will be used. Then confirm that the mortar’s current product data sheet approves that exact combination. Labels such as “modified” or “thin-set” alone do not specify the right product for a project.

What to check before choosing a mortar

Work through the tile, substrate, and exposure together. A mortar can meet a particular ANSI material classification and still be unsuitable for a specific tile or installation method. The Tile Council of North America (TCNA) notes that its installation recommendations depend on a properly designed, constructed, and prepared substructure (2025 TCNA Handbook overview).

  1. Identify the tile. Record its material, size and format, backing or mesh, and any setting instructions from its manufacturer. Ceramic, porcelain, glass, and natural stone each have product-selection considerations; gauged porcelain panels and slabs also have dedicated installation standards (TCNA Handbook overview; TCNA ANSI Standards).
  2. Identify the substrate and installation assembly. Establish what the tile will bond to, and check that the surface is clean, sound, properly prepared, and flat enough for the tile and method. The 2025 TCNA Handbook includes substrate-flatness information; ANSI standards separately address substrate preparation, cement backer units, membranes, and tile-setting methods (TCNA Handbook overview; TCNA ANSI Standards).
  3. Identify the exposure. Specify whether the installation is indoors or outdoors and whether it will be exposed to water, submersion, or other demanding conditions. Do not assume one mortar class is right for every shower, pool, exterior installation, or commercial space. Check the applicable installation method alongside the tile and mortar manufacturers’ instructions.
  4. Check the product data sheet. Confirm the mortar is approved for the tile, substrate, exposure, and method. Review stated limits on tile size or placement, maximum bed thickness, mixing, and curing conditions. If the project specification names a product or performance class, make sure the selected mortar meets it.

What mortar classifications tell you

ANSI designations identify material classes, not a universal product recommendation. TCNA’s standards list includes these cement-mortar classifications (TCNA ANSI Standards):

ANSI designation Classification listed by TCNA
A118.1 Dry-set cement mortar
A118.4 Modified dry-set cement mortar
A118.11 Exterior-glue-plywood modified dry-set cement mortar
A118.15 Improved modified dry-set cement mortar

TCNA describes thin-set or dry-set mortar as cement, finely graded sand, and a water-retention compound, designed to work in a thin layer—typically no greater than 3/16 inch. Polymers are added to modified mortars to impart properties such as improved adhesion, flexibility, and freeze-thaw resistance (TCNA Dryset Mortar FAQ). These descriptions do not determine whether a mortar is approved for your particular assembly; check the product data sheet and installation specification.

Can thin-set mortar level an uneven floor?

No. Thin-set permits only very minor height adjustments; tile follows the plane of the substrate. TCNA explicitly says thin-set is not appropriate for adjusting a surface’s level or flatness (TCNA Dryset Mortar FAQ). Correct flatness or level problems with a preparation method or underlayment specified for the project, then set tile with the approved mortar system.

How do wet areas and movement affect the choice?

A wet-area installation needs a mortar and complete assembly approved for its intended conditions. The TCNA Handbook includes wet-area guidance, but a general mortar label is not enough to establish that the product suits every shower or other wet installation. Confirm the installation method and check the product instructions for the precise exposure (2025 TCNA Handbook overview).

Mortar also cannot replace movement accommodation. TCNA says movement joints address stress caused by differing expansion and contraction between tile and substrate, and recommends allowing for expansion and contraction in every tile installation. Moisture and direct sunlight can call for more frequent joints indoors; exterior temperature range also matters. Placement and frequency depend on site conditions, so consult the Handbook’s EJ171 guidance or a qualified designer (TCNA Placement FAQ).

Which standards and guidance should you consult?

The TCNA ANSI Standards page lists A108.01 for general requirements covering structures, substrates, and preparation. Its 2026 list also shows A108.19 for interior gauged porcelain tile panels and slabs and A108.20 for exterior panels and slabs as current. Standards can change, so check the current list and project specification before installation (TCNA ANSI Standards).

The 2025 TCNA Handbook overview says the publication includes product-selection guides, wet-area guidance, substrate-flatness information, mortar and grout specifications, and excerpts from ANSI workmanship standards (2025 TCNA Handbook overview). For an unusual substrate, large-format tile, gauged panel, or demanding exposure, use the relevant installation method and current manufacturer documentation; get project-specific guidance from a qualified tile professional when needed.
