You can automate selected aquarium tasks with reef-pi, an open-source project that runs on a Raspberry Pi. It is not a boxed, plug-and-play controller: the software is one part of a DIY build, and the sensors, switching hardware and other electronics you add determine what your setup can do.
You can start with a few functions and expand as needed. The project is reef-focused, but its guides say some parts can be adapted to freshwater aquariums; reef-specific features are not automatically appropriate for every freshwater tank.

What reef-pi is—and what it is not
reef-pi combines open-source software, build information and guides for making a physical aquarium controller. A Raspberry Pi provides the computing platform, while separate electronics connect it to aquarium equipment. The reef-pi project repository describes a browser-based interface and a range of automation features, but installing the software alone does not give a Pi the sensors or outputs needed to control a tank.

Think of reef-pi as a configurable project rather than a universal appliance. Decide which tasks you want to automate, then select compatible sensors, switching hardware and actuators for those tasks. The reef-pi project site separates software installation from guides for power control, temperature, auto top-off, lighting, pH and dosing, reflecting that different builds require different components.

What can reef-pi control or monitor?
The project lists these capabilities. They are available as features of the project, not a promise that any basic installation includes them; each depends on the appropriate hardware and configuration.
| Function | What it can do | What the build needs |
|---|---|---|
| Equipment control | Switch connected equipment on demand or on timers. | Compatible switching hardware and the equipment being controlled. |
| Temperature | Monitor water temperature, control heaters or chillers to maintain a set range, and alert when readings leave that range. | A temperature sensor and compatible switching outputs connected to the relevant equipment. |
| Lighting | Automate LED lighting schedules, including sunrise-to-sunset patterns; the guide also describes day/night or lunar-cycle simulations. | Lighting hardware and control electronics compatible with the intended schedule. |
| pH | Monitor pH, display readings and use thresholds for actions or alerts. | A compatible pH probe and interface electronics. |
| Dosing | Control peristaltic pumps to add measured liquids such as reagents or liquid food. | Suitable pumps, control outputs and a dosing plan. |
| Auto top-off | Detect a falling water level and add fresh water to compensate for evaporation. | Water-level sensing and a controlled top-off mechanism. |
| Monitoring and workflow | Provide charts, dashboards, email alerts, tank photography and macros for multi-step workflows such as water changes. | Configuration and any connected devices needed for the chosen workflow. |
Each function should be selected for the tank and the job it will perform. For instance, a controller that only schedules equipment does not need the same sensors or outputs as one that also monitors pH and runs a dosing pump.

Can you use reef-pi for a freshwater aquarium?
Yes, in principle. Adafruit’s reef-pi overview says the project may be useful for freshwater aquariums as well as reef systems, and Raspberry Pi’s 2018 article about reef-pi says project elements can be adapted to different setups.

What hardware do you need?
Start by listing the functions you want, then identify the hardware each one needs. A Raspberry Pi board alone cannot read a water-level sensor, measure pH or switch aquarium equipment without the relevant interfaces and connected components.
- Choose the functions. Decide whether the build will handle equipment schedules, temperature, lighting, pH, dosing, top-off or only a subset.
- Map each function to hardware. Identify the sensor, control output, switching device or actuator needed, and check that it is compatible with the planned equipment.
- Check the Pi platform before buying. Raspberry Pi’s 2018 article names Pi Zero and Pi 3 as examples, and the repository lists snapshot packages for those platforms. Those examples do not constitute a complete current compatibility matrix. Review the current installation guidance and supported-platform information before choosing a board.
- Build from the relevant guide. Use the project’s feature-specific guides for the functions you selected rather than assuming one parts list fits every build.
A community add-on illustrates one possible route: the Leviathan board repository describes relay outputs, dosing outputs, PWM lighting, pH and temperature inputs, and top-off sensors. It is an example of community hardware, not a required or officially endorsed part of reef-pi; its repository is small and includes work-in-progress documentation.

How to choose a practical build
Keep the first build aligned with your actual needs and your comfort with electronics and configuration. Before committing to hardware, work through these decisions:
Recommended Free Tools
- Tank application: Is the setup reef or freshwater, and which functions are genuinely useful for it?
- Equipment fit: Can the planned control hardware work with your existing lights, heater, pumps or power switching?
- Build complexity: Are you comfortable connecting and configuring the sensors and outputs the chosen features require?
- Ongoing upkeep: How will you maintain probes, tubing and other replaceable parts, and recognize when a sensor or actuator needs attention?
- Electrical design: Treat the build as a DIY electrical project near water. The sources describe project features and example builds, but do not establish a jurisdiction-specific safety specification or certification. Verify component suitability and applicable local requirements rather than treating project documentation as safety approval.
A dosing-pump example is not a reef-pi bill of materials
Raspberry Pi Official Magazine describes a separate aquarium dosing project by Joe Stiff built with a Raspberry Pi Pico, relays and two pumps. Stiff reported a total project cost of £14 and a target dosing accuracy of 0.5 millilitres or less. For that project, he configured one pump to deliver 200 ml of calcium hydroxide per day in 96 small doses. These are historical, project-specific figures, not current prices or general performance guarantees for reef-pi or other dosing systems.

The magazine attributes this design rationale to Stiff: “The doser needed to be low voltage because of its proximity to water, and I wanted it to be small and neat so that it could go near a beautiful reef tank and not look out of place.” That statement explains his project choices; it is not a wiring standard or a safety certification. The Pico dosing build is an example of a related aquarium automation project, not a required reef-pi component.
