Yes—ordinary propane cylinders are designed to stay outdoors in cold weather. Keep the tank upright and stable, away from ignition sources and added heat, and follow its label, manufacturer instructions, and local supplier guidance. Never bring it indoors or try to warm it with a heater, flame, or other external heat source.
Why outdoor storage is the safe arrangement
The Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) says a propane cylinder is designed to remain outside in any weather. North Carolina’s storage guidance likewise calls for propane containers to be stored outdoors. That does not mean a tank belongs just anywhere: use a stable outdoor location, keep it upright, and follow the tank’s instructions and local requirements.

Do not move a cylinder into a house, garage, basement, shed, tent, or other enclosed space to shield it from cold. PERC warns against indoor and enclosed storage even for cylinders that seem empty. PERC’s Safety Guide for Propane Users and its Safety Guide for Portable Propane Cylinders explain these precautions.

A tank being safe to store outdoors does not guarantee that every appliance and supply system will work normally in every extreme temperature or at every fuel demand. If an appliance or propane system has trouble in extreme cold, contact your propane provider for advice. The available guidance does not establish one temperature cutoff that applies to all tanks, regulators, and appliances. PERC’s winter-storm guidance and AmeriGas’s storage tips offer additional context; follow your equipment instructions and supplier guidance rather than treating a single temperature recommendation as universal.

Winter checklist for a propane tank and its surroundings
- Keep the cylinder upright and stable. Set it on its base or foot ring so it cannot roll or tip. Follow the label and manufacturer’s instructions. North Carolina’s propane-container storage guidance also addresses outdoor, upright storage and tank condition.
- Keep heat and ignition sources away. Never use a torch, heating pad, space heater, or other external heat source to warm the tank. PERC warns that external heat can raise pressure; its cold-weather guide says not to try to keep tanks or cylinders warm this way.
- Clear snow and ice carefully. Keep the tank area, piping, regulator, and meter visible and accessible. PERC recommends using a broom near system components rather than striking them with a shovel, which could cause damage.
- Check for storm damage only when safe. After high winds, heavy rain, or another weather emergency, look for visible movement or damage only if there is no suspected leak and the area is safe to approach. If the tank or line has shifted or appears damaged, contact the propane retailer and have the system inspected before reuse as directed.
- Act cautiously if you suspect a leak. If you smell propane or hear an alarm, avoid flames and sparks, leave the area, and call the propane supplier from a safe location. Contact emergency services if you cannot reach the supplier or the situation requires it. Follow the supplier’s instructions before returning or using the system.
Checking a portable-cylinder connection
For a portable cylinder connection, PERC describes checking for leaks with leak-detection solution or thick soapy water. Apply it to the connection and watch for bubbles. If bubbles persist after you close the valve, tighten the connection, and repeat the test, close the valve and call the propane retailer. Do not use a test result to justify using a damaged system.
