There is no universal Festool extractor setting for every tool. Start with low suction, raise it until dust is captured effectively, and stop at the lowest level that still lets the tool move and work properly. If the tool sticks, slows, or leaves a worse finish, reduce suction. Check the manuals for your exact extractor and tool: controls and procedures vary by model.
Why there is no single setting for every tool
The right suction depends on the application and on how the tool behaves while you work. A setting that captures dust well with one setup may make another tool difficult to guide. Festool’s general direction is to adapt suction to the application; its current CT MIDI I and CT 26 EI product pages describe five suction levels. That does not establish a shared numbered scale or a recommended level for every Festool tool, and older extractor models may have different controls.

So a chart that assigns one dial position to every saw, router, or sander would imply precision the available instructions do not provide. Use observable results instead: dust capture, tool movement, speed and load, surface quality, and abrasive wear. Make adjustments in small increments and judge the result while working.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Think of the setting as a working balance, not a target number. Too little suction may leave dust at the tool or allow the hose to clog; more suction is not automatically better if it pulls the tool against the surface or changes how it works. The useful setting is the lowest one that captures dust effectively without making the tool hard to control or compromising its work. That balance can change when you change tools, the working position, the hose, or the task.

If you use several tools with one extractor, reset by observation when you change setups rather than carrying over the previous tool’s dial position. A setting that felt right for one tool is not a reliable preset for another. The same is true when changing between applications with the same tool: check capture and control again instead of assuming the setting will suit every pass.
Know which control you are adjusting
The extractor’s suction control
This adjusts the extractor’s suction power. On CT 26/36/48 AC models, the manual describes using the suction-power adjuster to adapt machine suction to different applications. The control’s form and scale depend on the extractor model, so follow the manual for yours rather than assuming that a number or dial position carries across models.
Current CT MIDI I and CT 26 EI models are described as having five suction levels, but that product information should not be treated as a universal scale for the CT range. It does not identify one level as correct for a particular saw, router, or sander. If your model has a numbered or stepped control, use it to make incremental adjustments and evaluate the result; do not translate a number from another extractor into a supposedly equivalent setting.

A tool’s own suction regulator
Some tools have a separate regulator. PLANEX instructions and guidance describe adjusting suction at the tool as well as giving directions for the extractor. Ceiling and wall guidance applies specifically to the PLANEX’s own regulator; it is not a general instruction to set every extractor to maximum for ceilings or minimum for walls.
Before changing anything, identify which control you are moving. If a tool has its own regulator, do not treat it as interchangeable with the extractor’s suction control. A tool regulator and the extractor control are distinct parts of the setup. Follow the tool manual for that tool’s regulator and the extractor manual for the extractor’s control. In particular, do not confuse the suction adjustment with filter-cleaning controls, which perform a different function on some extractors.
Set suction by observing the tool and dust capture
- Check the exact manuals. Confirm the extractor and tool models, the intended connection, and any tool-specific instructions. Start with the manufacturer’s directions where they exist. Models and control layouts vary, so the model name and year can matter when checking hose fit, settings, and automatic-start behavior.
- Begin at a low suction setting. This is the documented starting approach for PLANEX and a practical starting point when adjusting application-based suction. Do not assume a low setting is sufficient; check the capture and tool behavior. A low start gives you room to increase suction only if the work shows it is needed.
- Start the tool and assess how it works. Watch whether dust is being drawn away and whether the tool remains easy to guide. For PLANEX, Festool specifically advises starting the tool before placing it against the surface. With any setup, assess the tool while it is actually being used rather than judging the setting by the extractor sound or dial position alone.
- Increase suction gradually if capture is weak. Continue only while the tool remains controllable and works properly. The aim is effective capture without unnecessary suction, not the highest available setting. After each adjustment, reassess both dust capture and how the tool moves or performs.
- Back off if the tool sticks, slows, or affects the finish. With PLANEX, excessive suction can make guidance harder, slow the tool, harm surface quality, increase abrasive wear, remove too much material, or overload the tool. Reduce suction when these effects appear. Do not try to compensate for an overly strong pull by forcing the tool across the work.
- Recheck the setup if capture remains poor. Inspect the hose, connection, filter or bag, and the instructions for the exact models before assuming the dial is the problem. Weak extraction or clogging can point to fit, diameter, or setup issues, so turning the control to maximum is not a substitute for checking the whole path.
For a useful comparison between settings, change one thing at a time. If you adjust suction and change the hose or tool position at the same moment, it becomes harder to tell what improved capture or changed the tool’s feel. Keep the working approach consistent, make a small change, and compare dust capture, ease of guidance, tool speed or load, and the resulting surface. Then retain the lowest setting that achieves the needed capture while the tool continues to work properly.

There is no sourced numeric starting point for saws, routers, or every sander in the reviewed Festool instructions. For those tools, use the general application-based adjustment method and the manuals for the exact equipment. Avoid treating an online dial chart or another user’s setting as an official preset unless the manufacturer’s instructions for your model say so.

PLANEX is the clearest example of why tool-specific guidance matters. Festool’s instructions say to set low suction power, switch on the tool before placing it against the work, and increase suction until the machine is easy to guide over the wall or ceiling. These directions describe adjusting the PLANEX setup; they do not create a numeric extractor preset for other tools.
On the PLANEX’s own suction regulator, Festool specifies maximum suction for ceilings and minimum suction for walls. Follow that distinction only for the PLANEX regulator. If the machine becomes difficult to move or its performance or finish suffers, lower suction rather than forcing it across the surface.
The practical order matters: start low, switch the PLANEX on before contacting the work, then add suction until guidance feels easy. “Easy to guide” is the operational test in Festool’s tutorial; it is not a specified dial number. If the tool becomes harder to move, or the finish, speed, abrasive wear, or material removal is affected, the response is to reduce suction. Maximum for ceilings and minimum for walls refers to the PLANEX regulator specifically and should not be copied to an extractor control or another tool.
Check the hose and connection before turning suction up
A poor fit or an unsuitable hose can undermine extraction. Confirm that the hose is compatible with both the extractor and the tool port, and that it is properly connected. Festool lists the D 27/32 x 3.5 m AS/CTR hose for CT 15/25, CT MINI/MIDI from model year 2019, CTC MINI/MIDI, and CT 26/36/48 families. This listing does not establish compatibility with every model year, tool, or port: check the exact equipment before relying on it.

These hose details are useful when comparing setups, but they are not a blanket guarantee that every listed extractor, hose, and tool combination fits. The D 27/32 x 3.5 m AS/CTR listing names particular CT and CTC families, including a model-year qualification for CT MINI/MIDI from 2019 onward. Match the extractor model and year, then check the tool connection. A compatible hose listing for an extractor family alone does not confirm that a particular tool port will connect as intended.
When checking weak capture, look at the connection and hose as well as the control. Confirm that the hose is attached correctly and that its diameter suits the tool-specific instruction where one is given. For PLANEX, the 36 mm recommendation is relevant because Festool links it to lower clogging risk and higher suction. For other tools, do not transfer that recommendation without model-specific support.
Keep filter cleaning separate from suction power
On CT 26/36/48 AC extractors, the AUTOClean control concerns filter cleaning, not the suction level you choose for a tool. The manual directs users to select the highest AUTOClean setting for large quantities of dust, use automatic cleaning with a disposal bag, and set AUTOClean to 0 for wet extraction or when using a filter bag. These are instructions for the CT 26/36/48 AC system; consult the manual for another model rather than transferring the settings.
Do not respond to a tool that sticks by changing AUTOClean as though it were the suction adjuster. Likewise, do not use the suction control as a substitute for the manual’s filter-cleaning instructions. The two controls address separate things: one adapts machine suction to the application, while AUTOClean concerns filter cleaning. The specified AUTOClean conditions belong to CT 26/36/48 AC models and should not be assumed to apply to a different extractor.
When setting up a CT 26/36/48 AC, keep the stated use cases distinct: highest AUTOClean for large quantities of dust; automatic cleaning with a disposal bag; AUTOClean at 0 for wet extraction or use with a filter bag. If you are unsure which bag or operating mode is in use, consult the extractor manual before changing the control.
When AUTO-start does not switch the extractor on
Automatic start behavior is a separate issue from suction adjustment. An older CT guide notes that a very low-power tool may not trigger the extractor and that a variable-speed tool may need to run at a higher speed to trigger it. If the extractor does not start automatically, check the instructions for the exact extractor and tool pairing. Raising suction is not the same as resolving an AUTO-start trigger issue.

Keep the questions separate when troubleshooting: suction level concerns how much extraction is applied while working; AUTO-start concerns whether the extractor is triggered when the tool runs. For a low-power or variable-speed tool, check the pairing guidance instead of assuming a higher suction setting will make automatic start work. The note comes from an older CT guide, so confirm the exact instructions for your extractor rather than applying that behavior to every generation.
A practical checklist before work
- Identify the extractor model and the tool model; use their own manuals for model-specific controls.
- Check whether you are adjusting extractor suction, a tool’s own suction regulator, or filter cleaning.
- Confirm the hose diameter, connection, and compatibility with both pieces of equipment.
- Begin low and raise suction only as needed for dust capture while keeping the tool easy to control.
- If performance is poor, inspect the hose, connection, filter or bag, and AUTO-start behavior as separate possible causes.
A quick setup check can be done in this order: verify the tool and extractor instructions; confirm that the hose and connection are appropriate; identify the suction control you intend to adjust; begin at low suction; and observe capture and tool behavior. If the tool is easy to guide and capture is effective, there is no reason in these instructions to increase suction further. If capture is poor, investigate the setup and increase suction gradually. If the tool sticks, slows, or affects the work, reduce suction and reassess.
Keep this checklist model-specific. Festool’s current five-level descriptions apply to the named CT MIDI I and CT 26 EI products, not automatically to older CT models. The D 27/32 x 3.5 m AS/CTR compatibility listing has named families and a model-year qualification. The 36 mm hose and ceiling/wall regulator directions are PLANEX-specific. The AUTOClean settings cited here are for CT 26/36/48 AC. Following those boundaries is more useful than trying to turn the guidance into one universal chart.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a Festool chart showing the right vacuum setting for each tool?
The reviewed Festool instructions do not provide a universal numbered chart for saws, routers, sanders, and every other tool. Festool says to adapt suction to the application. Start low, increase it until dust capture is effective, and stop if the tool becomes difficult to guide or its work is affected. Check the manuals for the exact extractor and tool.
Should I always turn suction up until it is at maximum?
No. The aim is effective dust capture while the tool remains easy to control and works properly, not the highest available setting. If the tool sticks, slows, or affects the finish, reduce suction. With PLANEX, excessive suction can also increase abrasive wear, remove too much material, or overload the tool.
Does the PLANEX ceiling and wall advice apply to the extractor dial?
No. Festool’s maximum-for-ceilings and minimum-for-walls directions refer to the PLANEX’s own suction regulator. The PLANEX procedure is to start low, switch on the tool before placing it against the surface, and increase suction until it is easy to guide. Do not transfer those directions to another tool or control.

Which hose should I use with PLANEX?
PLANEX instructions recommend a 36 mm hose to reduce clogging risk and provide higher suction. Treat this as PLANEX-specific guidance. For other setups, confirm hose diameter, connection, and compatibility with both the exact extractor and tool.
What is the D 27/32 x 3.5 m AS/CTR hose listed to fit?
Festool lists it for CT 15/25, CT MINI/MIDI from model year 2019, CTC MINI/MIDI, and CT 26/36/48 families. Check the exact model year and tool-port compatibility; the listing does not establish that every hose fits every extractor and tool combination.
Is AUTOClean the extractor suction setting?
No. On CT 26/36/48 AC extractors, AUTOClean concerns filter cleaning, while the suction-power adjuster adapts suction to the application. The manual calls for the highest AUTOClean setting for large quantities of dust, automatic cleaning with a disposal bag, and AUTOClean at 0 for wet extraction or filter-bag use. Follow the manual for other models.
Why does my extractor not start automatically with my tool?
An older CT guide notes that a very low-power tool may not trigger the extractor and a variable-speed tool may need a higher speed to trigger it. Check the instructions for your exact extractor and tool pairing. AUTO-start behavior is separate from suction level.
The Bottom Line
There is no universal Festool extractor dial position for every tool. Start low, raise suction only until dust capture is effective, and back off if the tool sticks, slows, or its work suffers. Follow tool-specific directions—especially the PLANEX regulator guidance—and check the exact hose, extractor controls, and manuals before transferring a setting to another setup.
